The history of the ORIGINAL Portuguese Custard Tart (Pastel de Nata) -Pastel de Belém [PT & EN subs]
The Pastel de Nata is, now a days, a symbol of Portugal and cam be found all over the world. But the original one (Pastel de Belém) is only available from one "padaria" in Belém.
So we set up a meeting with Penélope Clarinha, one of the current managers, and member of the family that keeps the tradition going, to find out a little about the history and confection of the famous pastel, which has been kept a secret for hundreds of years.
Espero que gostem.

It’s so helpful just hearing the natural conversation and picking new words and phrases out. Muito obrigado Carla! You make a huge difference for those of us that have few listening resources. And those gorgeous tiles in the shop! 🤤 😊

Absolutely agree!
Loved this! My Portuguese friend said that you can't buy anything like the real Portuguese tart in Australia! Now I can see why! Glad there were English subtitles! 🥰Blessings from South Australia💕🐨

I'm glad you enjoyed it! It's true, authentic Portuguese tarts are hard to find outside of Portugal. Happy to hear the English subtitles were helpful. 🥰

I used to regularly watch the channel some years ago, but this video only popped up on my screen by now. 🤔
Wow I loved that! Thank you for the unique journey, was so interesting and helped a great deal with comprehension of the language....
That was so interesting. And it was great that the Penelope spoke so clearly and slowly, I was able to understand a lot of what she said.
Ótimo vídeo! Muito obrigado!
Obrigada, Carla!

It can be pronounced in 2 slightly different ways and If i had to teach the 2 ways of pronouncing it to an English native speaker I would write them like this: Oo’kyek, Oo’keh’k. Hope this helps you :)

That’s right as pastéis de Belém are only available at that place in the video - Belém. However the Portuguese Pastéis de Nata are widely sold in England (as well as other countries) these days - cafés and supermarkets such as Lidl’s sell them - that’s what I meant in the video. But as you point out the English have their own custard tarts that are similar in looks but very different in taste, I’d say.
