The History of Studio Ghibli 4/6 - Animation Lookback

Фильм және анимация

While Miyazaki keeps pumping out great movies to the Ghibli collection, the studio goes out to find new talents to take on the role of direction during the time they made films like Howl’s Moving Castle, Tales from Earthsea, Ponyo and The Secret World of Arrietty

Most people say that The Hunger Games are the films that Josh is best known for. For me, I think his best one is Howl's Moving Castle. He stated that he had fun considering the fact that during the breakfast scene he ate a muffin and drank water while recording.

The Secret World of Arrietty is probably my favorite Ghibli film. I think the cast of the Disney dub (especially Mendler and Henry) did an extraordinary job with their roles, and the feel I get from the film is a unique one.

I can confirm that. His first film, Tales From Earthsea, is definitely the worst Studio Ghibli film. His second film, however, From Up On Poppy Hill, is not only a great movie but also my personal favorite Studio Ghibli movie of the 2010s. I haven't seen Earwig And The Witch, so I have no opinion on that one.

Arrietty was (and more than likely be the only) Studio Ghibli film I got to see on the theaters. Studio Ghibli movies don't get played in my home town so we had to go out of town to see it. The only problem was that at that point I was 14 so I couldn't drive out to see it. Lucky for me my Dad had a softball meeting the exact same weekend (and within the exact same time) the movie was playing in theaters. And it was AWESOME! What's sad is that it would be the last one my neighboring town (or I should say towns because they played in more than one neighboring town.) would get to show as the rest of them weren't released by Disney but by Gkids (which I hate for that very reason, because they would only show the movies in towns that were like 4 or 5 hours away from where I live instead of an hour away which is totally uncool.) At least I got to see one in theaters. Update: HA HA HA! I get to see another Studio Ghibli movie in theater's! And not just any, but Spirited Away!! They brought the Ghibli film festival to a town an hour away! I'm so excited!!!

Funny story: Arrietty was the first (and so far, one of two) Ghibli film I had seen in theaters, and there was only one theater in my area at the time playing it. It was shown in this tiny auditorium on the top floor of the three story theater. Later on, I found out how stingy Ghibli was about hard film distribution as opposed to digital distribution, which.... explained.... a lot.

Only one part left... so don't expect him to go into detail about When Marnie Was There other than it's Ghibli's last movie and Kiernan Shipka and Ellen Burstyn, who did the English dub as Marnie and her Nanny respectively, had work together before in the Lifetime movie Flowers in the Attic. I hope AniMat mentions that Shipka was in Legend of Korra! That would make me happy.

honestly howls moving castle is the only christian bale role i enjoy. And there are womanizer plot points such as his castle is seen and the girls go nuts while doing rumors about him eating the hearts of beautiful women, the witch of the waste is a scorn lover, and when Sophie cleans his bath product spell making him a red head and not beautiful, he goes dramatic turning into a sorry sad muck puddle. In fact he doesn't want to take sides in the war as he just wants to be surrounded by beautiful things.

I remember renting Arriety on bluray and discovering that there was an unlisted hour long interview with Hayao Miyazaki. I promptly followed my viewing of the film with that extra feature and... I had heard that Miyazaki is known asa traditionalist and that he could be a bit cranky... But in that interview he tore up any notion that Yonebayashi's debut was anything more than simple acceptable tripe... Nothing to be that proud of... It was my first encounter with the Cranky ol' Granpah Miyazaki. The guy who would later utter the famous "anime was a mistake" and utterly destroy cgi technicians who tried to show him AI driven human IK rigs...

Matt, you pronounced Ponyo and Sosuke's names wrong. Ponyo is prounounced Pon-yo (Pon as in pond and yo like the greeting) and Sosuke is Sauce-Kay (in japanese the U after an s in the middle of a name isn't never said like P is psychatrist or psalm, there fore the U is skipped).

Also, the story detail in Ponyo wasn't quite right. It was because Ponyo accidently and unknowingly released a huge magic power from Fujimoto's potions in the process of becoming a human, that caused the unbalance of nature causing the tsunami and floods as well as creating prehistoric fishes and so on.

Yeah, I heard that Tales from Earthsea is the worst Studio Ghibli film, but it's not horrible. Well, let's be the judge of that for now.

3:23 Personally I don't agree with that mindset about Howl's Moving Castle being one of his weaker films.Does it have issues?Yes it does of course but nothing major enough to drag this film towards bad quality. What really holds this story together is easily the well written chemistry between Sophie and Howl as both are likable/relatable in what goals they desire. Now if I were to look at his weaker films I'd say Nausicaa Valley Of The Wind is one of them. While there are some characters I did enjoy in the story I feel its main character is so damn bland and uninteresting. Not to mention how one sided this film's nature vs humanity is where they paint nature in such an innocent light.Princess Mononoke which tackled this same idea did it *FAR* better.
