It's because re6 itself wasn't good. Running and shooting wasn't going to make up for it. I couldn't even get myself through the game, I didn't like it at all.

It really is, you couldn't have chosen a more apt word. Resident Evil 2 was and still is a truly amazing, ARTISTIC game. I honestly believe that if it hadn't dropped the same year as Metal Gear Solid it would've topped more "Year's End" lists and be looked at as a bigger statement in retrospect. It's my favorite game of all-time, and in my Top 3 best games all-time.

Jay Mike Honestly RE4 didn't "revolutionize" anything either bro. Sure, it was a big evolution for RE as a series, but the over-the-shoulder shooter thing, action-horror, and interactable cutscenes had all been done prior. RE4 is and will always be a great game, beloved by the general public, but for alot of RE purists and old-timers it's also viewed as the "beginning of the end" so to put it

i love every game in the series. had tons of fun with them all.

So many people complained about RE not being scary anymore. RE7 drops and gives them just that. MFs still find something to complain about. "Aww uhh RE7 is too short. It's in first person". Stop bitchin', and enjoy the game. It's not bad at all.

Erm...I already speedran through it in 2 hours and I´m about to get the Platinum Trophy. I know what I´m talking about. To be precise: It´s a bad/mediocre game in general. Why? There are many reasons. - Controls are stiff and slow. I played at an acceleration of 10 and it still felt like Ethan was on dope. - Graphics are good at first sight but the details suck ass. Just look at the bushes in the first 3mins...you can see a blurred wall of "bush" just a few feet away. Things like this shouldn't exist in 2017. - Only three enemy types (besides enemy bosses) that all look the same with literally no AI present. Hell, some of them don´t even attack you for a few seconds. I don't even count the bugs as enemies. - Most of the time you can just outrun or trick them because of their nonexistent AI. After a few tries I didn't even have to use any guns, just the knife to get rid of nearly all enemies. - The Story is basically nonexistent, stupid, shallow and in no relation to the RE franchise. A bad reinterpretation of "F.E.A.R.". A 300m long Supertanker explodes and crashes at the coast of Illinois and no one cares...sure. - The characters behaviour is illogical and stupid most of the time. Even the first ten minutes of the game feel more like a parody...like watching "house of the 1000 corpses". And then the black cop arrives...solo...oh my good lord, who writes shit like this? - It fails to deliver a true tension. It only has a few jumpscares with cheap tricks like spawning an enemy directly behind or in front of you. Games like Slender, Alien Isolation, Outlast or Dead Space shit on this game in terms of horror. - The puzzles are no puzzles, just stupid playtime expanders. - The final boss is so lame and stereotypical...and jeez, we've already had that hilarious "Here's your super weapon, kill the Boss with it in an instant!"-scenario more than often enough already. - Chris Redfield looks like a cheap Ken doll copy from china. His appearance was also completely unnecessary. Same with Umbrella. - Etc. I´m a die hard RE fan and at least they tried something else. And you´re right: RE-Remake is the best RE by far...but RE7 is just...I don´t know. After all, it's a game you can play for sure. And it's obviously better than RE6. But it's neither a real prequel/sequel nor a real reboot or anything like that. It feels more like a well made indie game with the name "Resident Evil" badged on it.

I want a remaster of RE2-3 :(

I'm playing Resi 6 right now and so far the only thing I don't like about it is how far apart the saving points are from one another. I often had to stop playing before I reached a save point and had to re-play a good 10-15 minutes again :/ Other than that, I'm having fun playing it!

It's still there, I totally agree...but the way the brain processes it is totally different. It's significantly easier to maneuver Leon in RE4 than it was in RE2. I agree that the tank controls were still present, but the way the controls functioned were significantly different than how they did from 1996-2003.

Skye Troy RE3 functioned pretty much the same way. The only thing that was added was the manual aim. The perspective forcefully tied to the back made it work really well in 4 without the clunky-ness. The dream was to have RE4 style controls with the brilliant designs and balancing from the earlier games. Too bad capcom didn't go that way. RE7 to me seems to completely destroy the identity of the series.

A real resident games has two things: Zombies and puzzles. Those things are taken out after the 3rd resident evil.

God I agree with the main ending point of the video 100%. I've been saying this for ages. Resident Evil is more than just one thing, and I don't see what the big deal is with not being pigeon holed into one cookie cutter style. I may be extremely skeptical about RE7 but I'll give a chance because I've liked some of the transitions RE made in the past, while still appreciating the old games.

How can you include Rev1 and 2 to that list? Don't me wrong I like those games, but they are still action horror over survival horror. That and you mentioned that he bailed out after RE4, but honestly RE4 wasn't anything like survival horror either, in fact it was the defining change in the direction of the series, and he was the guy involved with the project. "A true fan of the series"? What a joke, you are the entire reason the Resident Evil community sucks, it's because of these insane RE purists that we constantly hearing half the community being a bunch of whining babies. I can honestly say I typically prefer all those games you listed over RE6, but I'd still put RE5 up there with the best because it was still an extremely good game, with a great Resident Evil story, just on a larger scale. I'm all for them going back to the roots, but RE4-6 are still Resident Evil games.

I hate hearing bad things about RE6. I've been playing RE series since it came out, but RE6 was great. I love The Mercenaries mode, and I still play it today. It really gives you some crazy excitements, and your heart will start pumping when you are aiming for the highest score. It was the new survival action game. I understand not everyone will like fast paced actions games, and RE7 did a good job incorporating PSVR to its game design, but I'll still miss the rush

I know people hate Re6 and I understand that (BUT) Leon's Campaign was actually great. I believe people want a mixture between Re4 and Re5 TBH. cause those are the ones the majority of fans like.

I agree with you Leon's campaign was great but no... none of us wanted a mixture between 4 and 5. most of the people that liked 4 so much are the ones that just started playing RE to begin with around that time. They never played 1-3 they never played CVX and they never played zero. and the others they just want to turn RE into a survival version of COD

RE4 was amazing. I replayed that story so many times and Leon was just too cool. Loved RE5 for it's fun cooperative play. It extended to RE6. I played with girls who were not much into games and they enjoyed it.

The ps2 version of re4 has horribly compressed textures and a very choppy frame rate. Not unplayable, just sub optimal at best.

James Mccloskey at that time i wasn't able to afford 2 or 3 consoles. And in the end, even a downgraded version would have been better than nothing (we got Outbreak but still). the PS2 was the platform to sell (didn't know if they knew that by the time they released the game on Gamecube).

It's all about 1-3 and veronica. IMO the downfall of the game started with RE4. 4 is not a masterpiece and 5 & 6 were terrible Why turn a survival horror into a shooting game? we have shooting games. CoD & BF dominate the market in that area, why compete? Resident Evil removed itself so far from it's roots that it lost a large amount of it's fan base and was now in limbo. Resident Evil is about the survival horror - intense, slow paced, being resourceful, lateral thinking and atmosphere

RE4 was the beginning of the end for the franchise. Fantastic game, but it's one of the reasons why the franchise is dead or at least dying. Even the series creator (Shinji Mikami) admitted that RE4 strayed too far from its horror roots, in favour for action-oriented gameplay. He would later on developed The Evil Within, which is the true successor to RE4. Revelations is essentially what RE5 should have been and RE6 should have been aborted before it went into alpha. RE7 looks to be return to form but the First Person worries me. Do we REALLY need yet ANOTHER First Person horror game?

What people fail to realize is you can have a scary coop experience. Imagine being in the mansion only you get to play as Chris and Jill at the same time with your friend being right next to you. The catch is you aren't near each other. This way here if you play solo there is no AI but you still can be scared without a partner if you play with coop. Maybe you have moments where you are with your partner but in tight quarters with a lot of enemies and not much ammo between both of you. I love the idea of having a friend over and play a game similar to REmake with them. It's very possible but probably has never and will never be done. It would take effort. I was a huge fan of the original RE games but I always wanted coop. I thought it sounded fun. Now onto this new RE game. I see no returning characters, enemies, corporations, perspectives, or really anything that makes a RESIDENT EVIL game a RESIDENT EVIL game. Even with RE5 and 6 you at least had Leon or Chris or Sherry it someone...

or something to fall back on. RE7 is trying to be over radical while saying its a return. It can't be if it doesn't have a sense of Resident Evil. The game isn't action-y so fans who hated 5 and 6 are automatically drawn to it, but I believe RE can be better than this. Better than Silent Hills and Outlast and The Evil Within and than itself. RE7 doesn't need to be the next (fill in the blank). It needs to be another RE game that adapts not changes.

I fucking love resident evil 5, it is probably my favourite game. I remember the whole controversial debate about it being in Africa and I was only 9 at the time, however when playing with a friend that is when it gets fun especially when you see the chainsaw guy for the first time (Although I'll definitely admit that after playing resident evil 4, that chainsaw guy is way scarier where as resi 5 is more suspenseful.) Hell I'll even admit to downloading the resident evil 5 demo to play online with my friend and that was after I got rid of the full game 😂. I guess my love for this game comes from the nostalgic bias I'm emitting right now but after playing and completing the game on PC I went out of my way to buy it again on xbox one and have yet to play it, so wish me luck.

I did use my Guncon, I used to use the controller Guncon combo, and I used to use my code breaker to force a third person perspective while shooting, lol.

GREAT video. One your better recent features, GameSpot. I love the conclusion made at the end, and I think that's what's kept the series alive all these years, through its ups and downs.

honestly i think alot of people loved resident evil 6 because it was fun. i did for sure. people prob just started over exaggerating how bad it was when it was pretty decent. i loved the intertwined story it was smart and cool af because my favorite characters got to meet each other. but thats just my opinion it all good if u dont agree

For a video entitled "The History of Resident Evil" you sure skipped a lot of games... (Outbreak, Revelations, Umbrella Chronicles, the DS games, etc.)

I think he only added the ones that carried the story, with reoccurring characters, new ideas and not the same play field of the past with different characters, like resident evil outbreak, the characters that survived are never seen again, well except for that reporter lady’s news paper in RE7

I didn't like the direction RE4 took either, but still RE 4, Outbreak 1 & 2 and Revelations 1 & 2 were probably the best titles in the series after the ones you wrote down. Revelations 1 & 2 were also the ones closest to the original style since RE4 which was so long ago, it should've been mentioned that it was received well during the time the hated RE 5 & 6 were released. Revelations is at least in the "mid-tier" of RE games meanwhile RE5 & RE6 are in the "low-tier".

Honestly, I don't understand what people want in RE. They say they want survival horror. Capcom brings it back with RE7 and they complain and say it doesn't have an RE feel. -_-

It's nothing like outlast or pt. Outlast doesn't have guns, bossfights, enemies to kill. If anything outlast, pt copied from RE.

The game doesn't say Resident Evil to me. Sure it's scarier but this as last game, I expected better The characters are the most important things to me in the series so the development of them but I don't like the story. And that "Chris" is in the game is the worst I have ever seen in my life. It's great that they went back how it used to be but as last game they should have included all important main characters

RE:3 Nemesis remake would be just the most amazing thing. Imagine Nemesis in all his glory in today's graphics. That would be something else. I, for one, also enjoyed RE: Outbreak File #2. It was still RE but slightly different experience.

I've only played RE 1, 2, 3, survivor, & Veronica volume 1. I truly enjoyed RE2 playing both male and female stories and the unlockable military story and tofu guy lol.

The one thing dad I did enjoy from all Resident Evils is the charming characters and their development! Such a shame RE7 is losing that :(

matthew fenwick you kinda forgot the first two games had very little character development, they built the characters through the series, and idk how you can say that lol, jack, Lucas, eve, Mia and Ethan had good development all things considering, especially Mia and jack, Ethan didn't need much because they wanted it to feel like you, that's why they never show his face, one of my favorite games in the series

Monster S marguerite was the least interesting, jack and Lucas are the most interesting by far, jack had the second best development in the game behind Lucas, Lucas was evil before turning, he didn't stay under Eve's control through the game, he knew about her and knew everything, jack was just a father who got drug into this after saving a little girl, he was innocent, Ethan's character doesn't matter period, I could keep going with the others but that'd be a lot more to write

wrong. RE4 killed the series. and fanboys who now call capcom "crapcom" are to blame. they are the ones who still cling to RE4 as the best game in the series. thats why we got what happened. and in the end. capcom is a bussiness, and a bussiness allways aims to make money. you cant blame them for doing what they did since it was the best move in their eyes since EVERYONE KEPT WANTING ANOTHER GAME LIKE RE4. thats why we got re5 and 6 the way they were. so grow the fuck up and think as an adult for once. maybe look at yourself as one of the people to blame.

The series has had its share of plastic surgeries. Resident Evil 4 was the ultimate, game changer.

+PissedOffGhost Yeah, the reason why Capcom changed direction with the series the first time was because of the poor sales of REmake on the GameCube. To my understanding Capcom began development of RE7 right after 6, so I assume that the success of REmake remastered didn't affect much of the tone of 7. But maybe after 7 Capcom will give us a new fixed camera game (Hopefully REmake 2)

There's nothing wrong with trying new ideas but I wish they would get back to horror I enjoyed most of the Resident Evils

I am still a huge RE fan, but I don't care for the new game. I don't see the reason why they transform this franchise into a boring walking Sim alâ Outlast or Amnesia... I will also miss the characters and wonder if we will ever see them again. Especially the relationship between Leon and Ada really kept my interest going.

s1yc3r I see you judged the game way too early, just because it has new characters means nothing, it is one of the best in the series because it's done something other titles haven't, if you like the first one and 4 you will like this game, don't watch a damn playthrough either, 10x better to play it yourself

Albert wesker I am already on my second run... Yeah I judged to early, but the demo wasn't optimal for showing what the main game actually is about. I still can't stand the first person view and it is a little too easy compared to older titles.

This was a perfect breakdown of the Resident Evil franchise. Props to you guys

My restored faith in the series and in Capcom began last year, when Resident Evil Revelations 2. That game was the most criminally underrated game of 2015. It was released at a budget price of $25, and I enjoyed it more than most full price titles. I'm now incredibly stoked for RE7.

Why would people complain about the first person? It's way more playable then the older games and immerses you more, making it more intense.

Truth is what makes a Resident Evil game is neither zombies, location nor player perspective. It's all about atmosphere. You know you're playing RE when you're terrified of shooting an enemy, because you just don't know what's behind that next door. It's the unknown.

I love this positive video about Capcom and Resident Evil. I agree, Resident Evil 5 is still me and my husband’s favorites and we’ve played all the main games and Outbreak. They did go a bit overboard with RE6 but they made a big comeback with RE7 and the recent RE2 remake. They will always have a fan in me. I went from watching my dad play this when I was younger to showing my kids how to play it now. Thank you Capcom for the memories ♥️

yea evil within is a true survival horror game and it is really a resident evil game only the name has been changed. Evil within game and dlc both was up to its mark.

This was a really good video well done man!

In my opinion RE 1, 2 and 3 were the true resident evil experience. RE 4, 5 and 6 were third person shooters with a RE paintcoat. The revelations were the closest thing modern RE had to coming to their roots

The main reason RE5 sold that good WAS because RE4 was that good!!!! I myself bought it just because I tought it was like RE4 and man I got bored with it!!!!

this was such a great video, im so fucking pumped for 7.. i just finished the remastered of the 1st one on very hard and working on professional mode on re4, then finish re5, and then plug in my old ps1 and play 1-3. truly an amazing iconic franchise and by far my favorite games of all time.

What about resident evil revelations? That was a good one....mostly.

Resi 7 was a true return to horror and the RE roots. What you said about the tank controls in Resi1 are what the 1st person perspective and engine of Resi7 gives. it makes you feel helpless and full of dread like 1-3 did. I'm in the unpopular opinion call of not liking 4, but 7 really bright it back and then some. 5 and 6 were crap by the way. a dislike for trying to justify those piles of hot garbage. while I don't like 4, I can concede it's a decent game. well, 5 had the neat part of co-op, but still; no.

Except it was all a lie. RE2 is using the same RE7 engine and it's not first person so they lied about it having to be first person.

just saying one thing: once upon a time there was a game coming out, that game made everyone go "meh" at it because it was "no more the game I knew"... that game was called Metroid Prime, and to this date is regarded as one of the best games of all time. that's a game that proofs that doesn't matter what you change, as long as you keep the basics of the games there: in that case those were: atmosphere and gameplay. i believe the same for resident evil 7, cause we might be in front of something else

I actually like the way you guys defined resident evil, your definition fits quite well with the series!

I can honestly say I personally have never been let down by resident evil up until resident evil 5 Ik everyone hated 6 but I liked 6 better than 5

I don't care what whiny past dwellers think, Resident Evil 7 is amazing and will save the franchise if each sequel is similar. I loved it, and I hate Re6. So I was skeptical but I'm glad the turn was taken to have horror.

I agree, while Resident Evil 5 had it's issues, I had so much fun playing this with my little brother. And in my humble opinion being able to move and shoot is a mistake. It makes the game no more scary than playing duke nukem. Having to stop to shoot is not only more realistic it adds so much more tension to the games. And anyone who things you can run and shoot a gun at the same time, has clearly never shot a gun before.

Resident evil 7 is amazing. I just finished it, and there were parts that scared me half to death. Puzzle solving was more simplistic in it, but that kind of made the game more enjoyable as opposed to some of the older ones. 1 and 2, for example, I was stuck for HOURS sometimes trying to figure out how to get past certain obstacles. It's the first person perspective of a classic resident evil game.

Resident evil 6 was GREAT. Played all and love all. 6 however gave me everything I liked from Resident Evil 5 to Nemesis styled to Zombie city outbreak. The story was meeeh but when has resident evil ever had a "omg wow" type of story. Capcom needs to make a spin off for Jake (Troy Baker FTW)

Creepy Pastas, yes... it did. It was much better than the later games. The story line with William Birkin and the G virus was the shit. The way he kept mutating throughout the game making him bigger, uglier, and harder to put down. That shit was dope AF. The overall story wasn't groundbreaking, but it certainly had some really awesome aspects.

I honestly loved the story in 6. What really sold me was how Ada's campaign put all the pieces of the puzzle together. Without it, 6 wouldn't have a solid story. So if anyone has played the game without Ada's campaign, which I know some people haven't played, then you're missing out.

In my opinion RE5 is better than both revelations1&2 revelations is more "creepy" but RE5 is a better game overall. I enjoyed both games for different reasons..

Great video, I wish he would have talked about Outbreak a little bit though. Would absolutely love to see those games remade.

Resident Evil 6 was great ONLY the Leon Chapter that was action survival horror like RE4. Capcom destroyed the game with Chris's COD chapter. They just needed to follow the RE4 formula and add to it like the multiplayer aspect on RE5 and the movements mechanics on RE6 which were great. They didnt need to do ANYTHING else. The multiple Chapters by characters was unnecessary and the machine gun Zombies were ridiculous.

As long as you're playing with co-op, yeah. Otherwise, the AI partner is frustrating.

what Capcom doesn't see is that resident evil is to linier yes for older versions that's OK for the space that they had and how it was perfect for its time but what you don't understand is that going left this time or using a different gun this time is just not good enough when people expect more from the series.

Great video. Resident Evil is all of the above. It's about not being afraid of trying new things. I personally like the fixed cameras, 3rd person view, and first person view. As long as the story and the roots of the franchise remains.

REmake > RE 4 > RE 2 > RE CV > RE 3 > RE 0 > RE 5 > RE 6

I liked the initial train area in RE 0 but everything after that just wasn't much fun. Billy and Rebecca were cool characters, but 0's main villain and the majority of its enemies/bosses were lame. 0's partner AI and item management were also terrible. The game would have been more enjoyable if it had featured a real 2-player co-op mode and a better inventory system.

i really like revelations 1 and 2, but in the first one, i really didn't like that it consistently ruins its own creepy atmosphere by yanking you out of playing as jill on the ship to everyone elses stories in terragrigia and the like every other episode. rev 2 flowed much better.

Love them or hate them; they're fantastic co op games. I had way more fun with a partner than playing on my own. Hell, even playing the older games will get boring after an hour or if you don't finish it from beginning to end in one sit down. I find myself groaning when I reload an old file where as with 5 and 6 I'm typically like "fuck yeah some mercenaries/ lost in nightmares/versus/boulder punching/2p action"

2 things: You forgot to mention the deal with RE3 and Code Veronica. There was a contract issue with main line 3 RE games must be released on the PlayStation. Code Veronica was meant to be the 3rd game and Nemesis was meant to be the spinoff but the contract made them swap. The other is that RE4 controls from an over the shoulder view but it's still tank control. You turn, you move back and forward. You shoot while standing still. RE6 ditched this (maybe RE5 did it first) and had twin-stick free movement.

I often hear people say that RE4 did away with tank Controls but I'm playing it rn and holding left or right on the D-pad or the analog sticks still just rotates Leon. I think the movement controls are the same. The camera is just different

It's a great game, but I completely agree. For me, the series peaked with the Gamecube REmake. Perfect combination of beautiful graphics and classic story/atmosphere.

I enjoyed the video but I wish you would have mentioned Resident Evil Revelations 1 and 2 as they were really good in my opinion. Heck the first Revelations is my 2nd most enjoyed Resident Evil game which was totally unexpected for me.

I have to differ when you say that the tank controls disappeared in RE 4... in fact, they're still there, unchanged. The only difference is that the camera is over the shoulder.

Resident evil 4 was trash. Every problem with the series began with RE4.

YES!!! I love your definition of what resident evil is!!! Resident evil 4 Is a masterpiece , I honestly believe it was a beautiful and a long await twist it needed. And I totally agree that 7 just proves that resident evil isn't afraid to evolve and not get too comfortable to what it is. I wish people understood this

I watched Daz Black play Resident Evil 7 on his channel, and to me, it was terrifying(but this is coming from me who doesn't like horror games at all), and I was completely hooked on watching all of his vids on it,bosses were terrifying, jump scares were actually scary, and the survival part looked fun and creative, and making it all first person made it very terrifying. It impressed me greatly!

This was a great video. Good job.

As long time Resident Evil fan. I'm really looking forward to RE VII. After what happened to the series in the PS3 and X360 generation. I'm really glad they are taking the series into a new direction.
