The History of Neyland Stadium

I know a place where over 100,000 people can gather together to celebrate a common cause. They come to learn about courage, determination and loyalty. I know a place that provides a medium for parents to pass on traditions to their children. I know a place where the hue of the congregation's attire on a cool night in October sticks in the minds of newcomers for the rest of their lives. And on a few rare nights, the voices of the past can sometimes ring louder in your head than the thousands of people that gathered there just hours before. That was an excerpt from a piece Daniel Hudson wrote in a bleacher report article about Neyland Stadium from 2012. I read it like it was a poem talking about how special the stadium that sits on the banks of the Tennessee river is. This past weekend I got to not only experience my first Tennessee game but my first SEC college football game. As I sat in the stadium looking around all I could think about was the history behind the stadium walls being a college football history nut.

Death Valley no doubt. Vols fan here but I went to that place this year for the game and it was absolutely amazing
They have to preserve this stadium just like the rose bowl, the big house, Fenway park, and Wrigley field

When the expansion was made in 1996 it became the largest stadium in college football.

Eh it’s okay. Take it any day over the Suckeyes but o still call it a bowl. Just like the rose bowl. Large with a lot of people but the crowd isn’t on top of the players in two level stadiums.
Michigan’s is slightly bigger but Neyland makes it sound like library in comparison
Most of the video is spot on, but the timeline on the name is a bit off. Neyland was still alive (still coaching actually) when the stadium was named after him. He's one of the few coaches who has coached a game in a stadium thats named after him.
You need to double check your research. It was 1996/1997 when Neyland Stadium completed the upper deck to have the largest seating capacity in college football with more than 109,000 seats. Michigan did an expansion the following year to retake the top spot with around 112,000 seats. It wasn't until 2004/2005 that the capacity shrank. You said that Tennessee expanded the upper deck in 2004, which was the year they removed seats. I remember this from my childhood and being a student in 2004.
