The History of Neocaridina Shrimp -How We Have Bred New Colors Into The Line from Red Cherry Shrimp!

Ғылым және технология

/ somainkdesigns
This is a quick overview and by quick I mean 15 minutes long. Of how red cherry shrimp and wild neocaridina shrimp have come to exist in so many different colors and patterns within the aquatic fish and invertebrate Hobby. I will be discussing selective breeding, natural mutations, evolution, camouflage, and the difference between different lineages.
What do those names actually mean at the pet store when you buy a shrimp? Buyer beware, a blue dream and a blue velvet shrimp are not the same thing genetically. Throw in blue topaz along with blue rilis and you're in a world of confusion. I hope to help you sort all this out thanks for watching!

    This is a chart that I had taped to the side of one of my tanks when I was breeding shrimp and trying to develop my own line, purple with a blue head. I didn't get very far before I accidentally put pb gourami fry in the tank. I didn't notice them until they had grown to a decent size, and by that time they had killed off all the shrimp.

    Man, this is the best explanation of neocaridina evolution I have found. Really interesting point about how brown wild shrimp have the most potential. Also, I really appreciated your further explanation as to where the colours that make up that brown came from, as well as why this fact doesn't clash with your earlier point about natural selection / why we don't see these colours in wild cherry shrimp today (e.g. that maybe yellow was ok in the past deep in the ocean, etc.). Do you have a 'neocaridina care guide' video that I can't find?

    100% they like planted and dirted tanks the most due to the mulm and algae /bio film layers. Just make sure it's fully cycled since they're sensitive to ammonia. After 2 months max you should be clear with even the most ammonia rich soils if you have plants in there. Cheers!

    Is the rili gene homozygous recessive? It seems more pattern. The colors are obviously more line bred though I’m sure some of these colors came from recessive genes such as an amelinistic gene perhaps? Caridina sp. seem to play more along these recessive gene lines for example crs and cbs. Super cool. Sorry if this question has been asked. I wasn’t motivated to go through all the comments. Really great video! Cheers

  • @Fishtory

    @Fishtory

    4 жыл бұрын

    Good question, and the problem everyone has in this shrimp hobby, is that there are 3 or 4 ways to arrive at various color and pattern lines . So for instance an orange rili could have come from a yellow line that was red before that...or could have been from a straight red genetic line with no orange or yellow genetic info in the line. On top of that, there are now thought to be 4 and maybe as many as 8 species of neocaridina from zhangjiajiensis, to palmata to davidi ... and they all express things slightly differently. So there are likely dormant genes still passed on, that only express when crossed just right But for me these were blue dreams that came down the red morph line and then started to Express clear... but some are bloody mary and will express blueish clear and light blue...and yet even though you can select for the same phenotype ... the genes can end up with co-dominance or latent generation expression. Basically it's a headache unless you know the line you have and it's lineage back to around 2008/2011 when the traits first were solidified. I hope that helps? But im guessing it wont.

    Great video!! Just subscribed and liked. I have something really interesting that doesn't flow exactly the way your chart says so wondering if I can get your opinion on it. I have orange shrimp that are breeding like crazy and about every maybe one or two out of a hundred come out red. The females are stunning red, the male's not as much. Anyway the way your charts flow it says red goes to Orange but it doesn't show reverse, so I'm wondering if your chart took in all the different ways things come out or that was just a general summation of how it normally goes. Again I have orange shrimp and they spit out nice red ones I would say one or two out of a hundred. They've been doing this for quite some time so it's not a one off. Let me know what you think about it and what might be happening there.

    They did come from that line, yes... but it takes a one in a million type mutation...then you can cross them with their siblings and usually 25% will have the genes...over time you breed those ones and more and more greens will appear...but they do this on huge farms outdoors usually...so we are talking very very rare odds compared to just keeping 40 or 50 shrimp at home. But it's not impossible...some people get lucky hehe

    So from what I understand the shrimp they are bred with can affect the outcomes by bringing in more genetics. Let's say you want a var. green, it comes from an orange. Pretend for a moment that your shrimp can reproduce by itself. That orange shrimp has a possibility of giving you the green, but let's say a green is less likely than an orange rili since the orange rili trait is more dominant. Now step back to choosing which shrimp to breed it with. From my understanding you could breed it with any shrimp, since both the mom and dad will pass on genes, and have a chance of getting that green you want. However, if you breed two oranges together your chances will be higher since it is likely that both the shrimp have the green gene. So if you want a specific shrimp color as long as you have the shrimp the color comes from, you could breed it with anything and you have a chance of getting it, but it won't be as high as if you bred two of the shrimp your desired color comes from.

    is it zhangesis or something like that? because they keep changing lines...I updated the video and put the newest "confirmed " routes of genetics up... however as I say in the newest video, there are several paths to many of them. especially since folks bred them- let them revert wild then rebred them down another line in some cases. ...i'm excited for genetic work to finally get done next year, on all the strains

    looks like I am the only one bothered by this (and maybe the 14 who disliked this video) - but you are explaining a chart on a screen and you are holding your camera with a shaky hand, when you could have just inserted the image and occasional flashes, when you discussed a particular colour variation, and put those beside the voice recording. I am not a video editor expert and I could have done it. no need to give car sickness to people who just want to learn about shrimp.

I say the exact thing you just said.... "it's not like mixing paints".... yeah it's not on my chart because no one has had a stable line yet...however lucas bretz and monica polhore have both had colonies with purples appearing about 5% of births. SO i never said "you can get a stable purple line, " simply that purple shrimp have happened- and specifically it's because of bloody mary shrimp crossed with blue dreams that inherited blue exoskeleton and red flesh- looking dark purple... also sometimes you'll get wild reverts with pink or lilac colors... i have recent videos with thumbnails of purple babaulti shrimp also
