SHRIMP KEEPING -THE TOP 10 LIES, MYTHS OR HALF-TRUTHS DEBUNKED! From Cherry Shrimp to Exotic Species

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

SHRIMP KEEPING -THE OP 10 LIES, MYTHS. OR HALF-TRUTHS. From Cherry Shrimp to Caridina & Many More! This is a video that I created in hopes of eliminating some of the stress that is often brought into our aquatic shrimp keeping hobby. From How to care for shrimp, to beginning a colony for profit or simply for family fun I hope to answer a range of questions here such as...
How do I take care of my shrimp
What to cherry shrimp eat
Can caridina shrimp and neocaridina shrimp interbreed or reproduce together?
What temperature is safe for shrimps
Can i put cherry shrimp or malawa, babaulti pet shrimp in my outdoor pond?
How do i grade shrimp, does shrimp grading still matter ?

I can appreciate the technical proficiency of breeding the high quality shrimp. But honestly I'm much more in love with lower quality ones where they're still colorful, but transparent enough to let light through. They just look so vibrant to me. Blue jellies and low grade cherries are so pretty to me.

I totally respect that. With grading the real reason it matters, is because it takes so many more generations to get the deep colors. However, you should like whatever it is you like! The wild neocaridina are one of my favorites honestly

This video is the best best best! I’ve been keeping fish since I was 5.. and a lot of the stuff you say is what I naturally do, don’t medicate, have tonnes of live plants, have a little eco system, be easy going! I love it when you say be like nature, no sudden changes! It’s so true. I’m only just beginning keeping shrimp but have had fish tanks all my life. This is honestly super helpful! Thank you!! :)

I just think this info is the hard info to find...only experience and chatting with others over the years, seem to gain this type of info. As for ideal conditions...that info is all over, and people stick to it religiously and don't seem to just take a loss or two now and then... they assume one shrimp dies and they need to do an 80% water change or add chemicals. Just low and slow...chill. I swear, the more i forget about my shrimp, the better they do

The Secret History Living in Your Aquarium I have been told the tigers will outbreed and be more aggressive then the cherries but my TT’s are still new and I had to move them all (including the cherries) out of my cray tank because of predation so I’m not sure yet. I am rebuilding my badly decimated colony. (The tigers were new to the tank. i never got a chance to really see them breed in that cray tank.). I find them to be kinda shy right now, outnumbered still by the cherries.

You and Lucas and pops are just the best, no comparison. Oh, right, the colony thing, I hated selling off any of my brichardis and I am not normally like that with fish.

Temps do matter but not in keeping them alive as long as you don't go to hot, some people even have shrimp in outdoor ponds that ice over in the winter and their colonies survive. but higher temps do increase breeding and decrease longevity like with most other aquarium animal stock.

I've been experimenting with a mix of colours since the start of the year. It's weird, they do throw some "wild types"(the least colourful of which I've been moving into a fish tank to see where they go) but one colour also might just pop out a baby the same colour as the other parent, as if there wasn't a mixed parentage. So I've had high quality oranges from low quality reds, blues from greens, half blue and half random from one clutch, and so on. Even the "wilds" can have a lot of red/green/blue pigment and the patterning varies a lot so I'm interested to see where it goes. I've got a couple clear neos with blue stripes that I quite like, kinda like caridina tiger shrimp. I've also had some rili patterns recently start to emerge out of nowhere. This tank is a pure potluck C:

Totally! And usually people keep the origin a secret...or don't even know how they made it...but if you get 2 sharing the colors or patterns we like....then it can usually be selected and line bred! I have dark dark blues that i crossed with jades a year ago.... and one batch had orange eyes, navy blue body and a pink or gold razorback AKA , "gold line" ...to my surprise all their babies where black with white eyes and a pink line down their back haha...it lasted about 2 or 3 rounds of babies and then the color was back to a normal dark blue....that's a lot of the run, in my opinion. Thanks for sharing! And if you ever have photos youd like to share, consider joining our facebook group page :) CHEERS!

It would be great to have temperatures in both fahrenheit and celsius scale. I understand that the uploader is us-american and "thinks" in fahrenheit, as most of his compatriots, but on the other hand it would be great to make information accessible to as many people as possible, and all the rest of the world uses celsius, as it is practiced generally in science. Great video, as always! I beat you to it on the Tom Jones interlude though XD I'm definitely going to at least skip a day feeding, as I'm starting to see a worrying amount of baby snails preparing for world domination around the water surface. I keep my blue shrimp (only 3rd generation in now) in a tank without a heater, keeping itself right about the 21'C (or 70'F) mark, and as summer has passed, I do notice mainly the females moving around a lot less and seeming to not get berried as enthusiastically as when it was a bit warmer. In the evening I like to top the water off with some water, a bit warmer than their ambient and all seem to be just a little livelier. As you mentioned, I also keep Mother Nature in mind, and justify that little insurge of warmer water as there's bound to be someone peeing in a river somewhere in their natural habitat right now anyway. Temperature wise.

The Secret History Living in Your Aquarium Oh yeah, I probably should have clarified that I meant for neos! I think most other shrimps also have the same reaction to higher temps, but their ideal ranges are probably a little different. I’ve heard people say that too high of temperatures can cause fungal or bacterial diseases, but I keep my neos at ~78 and I’ve never had any issues. I also keep two smaller colonies unheated at about 70 and they don’t breed even half as fast as my warm colony, so I think I prefer keeping them warm.

@@benblassingourami984 yes, ive had similar results for the most part. Although in a shallow tank with high tannins and about 300tds (mimicing a late summer Taiwanese mountain creek) seems to also work as low as 72 for me...but thats way too much work... 75 is the magic number for where they produce over and over...otherwise ive seen that females will berry up...often abort the clutch and have one clutch every 6 months or less, and all staggered .. when at room temp in like a nano desk 5 gallon. All that said, my outdoor pond neos produce enough to keep an ever slightly growing number of shrimp in Seattle weather.

A school of small fish, some snails, LOTS of plants. (It's 125 litres / 33 gallons, so there SHOULD be room for shrimp and a small schooling fish. The plants are there to make it look pretty, but everything else doesn't need to be big and flashy; as long as there's interesting behaviour that's really all I need.)

Hello, as I hear, guppys/endlers really like salt. It could be used as medicine in case of the desease. Since I will have neocaridina shrimps and endlers in the same tank, I would like to know how much salt would shrimp tolerate...as for guppies i heard you can add up to 1g NaCl/1l water (desease outbreak), or 0,5g/l as preventive measure... Im guessing both numbers would be too high for shrimp, and I also got otocinclus affinis in my tank (dwarf suckermouth), so they are a limiting factor aswell.... So if you or any1 else can help me out with this, I would really appreciate it. Greetings from Slovenia ^^ (also as english is not my native language, if any1 finds a grammar error, it is yours to keep ;)

Hello Alexander. My shrimp have developed a problem that has me concerned for the individuals and the community. I can't seem to find anything related to it so far and I was hoping you might have some info from your experience with shrimp (neocardina). Over the last 24 hours I've noticed that 2 of my berried shrimp have a white fuzz coming from their eggs while being berried. I have seen this fuzz develop on dropped eggs before but I've not seen it on the shrimp holding eggs. I believe it to be a fungus. Is this something you've experienced before? I have a picture to show if it helps. I would be very grateful for any info or directions to a solution. Thanks! P.S. hope everything is going great with you, your family, and your tanks!

It is unfortunately a fungus... hopefully it is not elobiopsidae (i may have the spelling incorrect, however it sounds like "L - O -Bi- Ops-Eh-Day) Usually its green or yellow, regardless- many fungus strains (mostly from bulk orders originating in asia) have recently taken hold in the population entering the USA ... there are a number of fungi out there, however if it is related to that or similar ones, there is no known cure and people usually advise quarantine the shrimp around the infected ones for a month .... then kill or quarantine those effected and literally bleach or hydrogen peroxide the tank/ start plants, filter and substrate all over again. It could fungal and less virulent, like a velvet type infection so try API fungal cure at half fish recommended dosages or something similar, first. But if they do not heal or if they die, save your colony and future shrimp, money and invertebrates and start over. This is why im willing to pay more and shop for shrimp only from places with 90 day quarantine now (used to be 30 but the new fungi is evolving and very sneaky). Aquatic Arts . Com does this and theyre having a sale of 25% off already good priced shrimp...or any time after this week when the sale ends, use the code SECRETHISTORY15 for 15% off the shrimp, oh and mention my channel and you'll be entered into our 500$ july shrimp give away that im doing with them as a partner...if you use their sale of 25% off just leave my name or channel in the comments and theyll let me know and ill add you into the give away in July! Oh so iron is fine, unless you see orange and red staining minerality levels.... but in doses for plants etc, its usually safe. Avoid any copper ...copper sulfate specifically is the most common

If I can answer u by my experience, you have to do water changes.... 20% per week will be good. No water change leads to bad water even if it looks okay.. fish don't talk to say they're not okay, surviving doesn't mean happy, maybe u never lost fish, neons are pretty strong (for example they should live in cold water but they survive in heated tank) but shrimps are verry sensitive.. I lost my ghost shrimp in 3 day I never knew why but my velvet, cherry and amano are good now.. 2 of my velvet died at first but the others are good. Be sure u don't have No3 Nh4 No2 and copper in your water.. copper is fatal to shrimps, No3 have to be in verry small amount, and for that u need water changes even if u have a lot of plants.. all tank even "No co2, no fert, no filter etc", need it. And not a high level of minerals (gh-kh). Anyway depending on which species u want to have, tchek their profile to see which GH is better for them. Also be careful with the way u acclimate them.. try to put a little bit of the water tank in the bag/bowl few times while an hour, so they can acclimate to your water parameters and temperature. It's a lot to think/do but it's the better and sure way to not loose shrimps... some are expensive so u don't want them to die. And mystery snail can be verry big, be careful 😁

And even if they do munch on fish eggs...its usually a handful of eggs and not even 20% or more. (Off the top of my head)

No, i actually do water changes, per the fish's needs...so rainbow fish or psuedomugils get 60% a week... that's the hardest shrimp tank, and i actually keep it changed 2x a week often- so that the pattern of sudden change IS routine...i found often a colony will die up to 40 to 50% in these extreme conditions...but if you start with enough (20 is ideal)... then boom you get generation 2 after a struggle, and they survive at an 80% rate or some such thing...and better and better...so those are my strongest shrimp when they get adopted and live in ideal conditions
