The HISTORY of My Little Pony Music Videos

Ойын-сауық

Over the years the My Little Pony fandom has created a countless number of impressive pony videos; among them are Pony Music Videos, or PMVs for short. My Little Pony music videos have been a staple of the MLP fandom for well over a decade now, so as such, let's go through the quite long history and evolution of these My Little Pony music videos!

PMVs were the gateway for an immeasurable amount of bronies both active and inactive. They certainly were for me, and you mentioned the specific one by name that sent me down this now 12 year journey of equine obsession. I think we should dub you the official fandom historian based on how much collective nostalgia you've induced with your videos.

Honestly ever since I was a child and still into these days I never could stop being amazed at how many talented people that truly love the show and being a part of the fandom MLP has united! And just how much dedication, appreciation and love was always put in any project, be it big or small, edgy or cute, simply written down one evening or turned into a multiple years project! Many of these videos inspired so many more people to create their own content and it's absolutely incredible how many creative paths people took, whether the result ended up being heartwarming, heartbreaking or an absolute mess of a silly (and enough of them pretty violent/disturbing) meme lmao Lately I often think how people usually look weird at you if you as an adult say you enjoy a cartoon about funny colorful horses, and that may upset and make one lose their confidence for it seeming "too childish", but thinking about how many adults contributed and still make literally legendary content and how many younger people and begginer artists had their first spotlight with MLP content, it just shows how actually mature this fandom can be for being based on a cartoon mainly meant for gils of the age of like 8-12 wlhfvbwljhfbv (And we're not even talking about when the cartoon starts to introduce insanely serious topics itself) Still, many of these vids bring mack massive nostalgia, for me personally it was also a Hijo de la Luna PMV that I watched like every day back then and also the amazing works of Dawn Somewhere and Sherclop pones, don't know how much they'd suit in as PMVs, but there certainly are ponies and there certainly is music in the videos hnnhn Also thank you for another video, it was a blast to watch, as always :]

what a literal THROWBACK!!! Possibly my fondest memory of the fandoms of early internet days were AMVs/PMVs, and I loved the ones you mentioned but the Twilight Satisfaction pmv is one of my favorites along with the PMV of Applejack to one of the earliest mlp songs dating to G1, Who's a silly pony. One not mentioned is also Little Talks PMV with Applejack and Braeburn as it literally introduced me to the song by Of Monsters and Men.

Honestly PMV's were easily one of my main driving forces for joining, and staying in the fandom! Like despite the fact I didn't grow up watching the show, I get really nostalgic seeing some of the PMV's people made in the past. Especially that particular 1000 years PMV, and PMV's of Lukas Graham's "7 Years", and Katy Perry's "Wide Awake" made by "Lucinda MorningStar". I'm very much a sucker for late 2000s, and early 2010s KZread content!

This is incredibly lovely! 1.5 hours of PMV commentary 💖 It's definitely sad that G5 hasn't had the same PMV trend going on as G4 did, but PMVs were indeed a reflection of the state of the fandom, especially 2015 when the show and PMVs were at their peak. I was a contributor on the old PMV Today website and the reason it died out was also just a reflection of why we did PMVs in the first place too, that is the burning passion we had we doing cool things with the tools we had available and the canvas of ideas MLP G4 gave which had run its course unfortunately. I'm still so glad to see PMVs have carved this little subcommunity of the fandom, because it gave us all a space to inspire one another and share neat techniques and story ideas. I would like to also mention PMVs not on this list that are made by MrDeLoop! They're well known for creating the original Discord PMV, and many others that focus on the simple yet masterly edited clips of the show. Thank you Tobby for taking all of us back on this journey 😊

There is another very popular sub-category you didn't mention. You could best describe it as the "Flashy Effects-PMV Style". Back then, I was the most popular PMV creator in this genre ("Breezy Blue"), so I can give you a little insight. So basically, all creators in this genre were young girls, which defined the video content a lot. Nobody was older than 15, most of us were 8-13. What made this genre unique was that it was all about adding lots of color corrections, blurs, flashes and transitions over clips from the show. It was not really about a deep story or message, like classic PMVs, but rather about nice to look at pop music PMVs that were fast-paced. Most of us used Sony Vegas for this, in combination with add-ons like Magic Bullet Looks and NewBlueFX. The songs we would use were mainly nightcore songs, especially pop songs that were popular at the time (often inspired by Chipmunks or MovieStarPlanet music videos). The PMVs would either focus on ships, or on popular antagonist female characters from S1-4 and Equestria Girls, like Sunset, Sci-Twi, the Dazzlings, Trixie, etc.). At the time, most of us didn't know English very well, so a lot of the videos didn't really match with the content of the songs. This was also a unique aspect of this genre. We would upload multiple times a week, unlike the older PMV community. Collabs within our own subgenre were also a very popular thing. As you can imagine, our target audience weren't classic bronies, rather just other young girls. But despite that, our videos were very popular. Each video would make around 80k-300k views, and they would often get hundreds of comments. The reason why most of our videos aren't online anymore is that, well, we were so young at the time. People from our schools would find out about our channels, and bully us for liking MLP. As a result, some of us stepped away from the show. Others stopped uploading because they were disappointed that Sunset Shimmer didn't return to Equestria, that she wasn't officially an alicorn, that Trixie didn't appear again in the show, and that the Dazzlings weren't in Equestria Girls 3 and 4. Our subgenre didn't really make beyond 2016. There were several reasons why everybody stopped making videos, but it was often connected to real life stuff. In my case, it was just that people from 4th grade knew about my channel, but I know from some other creators who were a few years older than me that they actually had mental issues at the time. It might also be worth to mention that our subgenre was also part of the speed-edit video and Instagram manip community. It was basically one large group of people who all did similar things. If you need examples for these types of PMVs or Instagram edits, I have all my content on private, but I can send you them if you like. Another creator, MLP Lights, is one of the few people who still has her videos online. You can also check her channel. I hope this was interesting to you, have a great day.

That all sounds very interesting, thanks for sharing your knowledge about it! I believe I may have stumbled across one or two videos similar to what you're describing when I was researching stuff for this video, but I didn't know it was an entire subgenre or anything.

As someone thats been making PMVs since 2012 (still going strong uwu) It's such as shame that they barely have any relevance anymore. My most popular one has just over 750k views, (which was 2015) now I'm lucky to break 5k. Also, my favorite one definitely has to be Lullaby for a Princess, which is a coincidence since I changed my name to Loona a couple years ago :3

This is a really well put together documentary of PMVs. You covered most of the landmark videos. It's a shame so many have been deleted. People today take for granted modern PMVs. But when you realize the software they were working with 10+ years ago those old videos are very impressive. The Magic PMV by MadameLeFlour for example was made in Sony Vegas which isn't even animation software. Thank you for this walk down memory lane.
