I will never understand why they tore the Pike down, it was here before Disneyland if anyone had foresight they should have cleaned it and expanded it. I enjoyed it alot. I remember my grandmother would always take us down on Wed, during the summers. At that time it was the SoCal place to go. That was in the 50s, yep I'm old.

do you memember a waterfall in long beach. It looked like a wall with qiant seashells embeded in it, with water pouring down into the seashells and water cscading down the seashels till it reached pool of water at bottom?

My great aunt lived in Long Beach by 1920, probably earlier. I remember seeing pictures of her on the beach, wearing black stockings while shoveling sand in a pail with her toddler son. My mom was born in 1930 Pasadena, and stayed with her aunt in Long Beach every summer growing up. She told me when she was 3, her cousins would walk to the beach carrying a beach umbrella across that my mom would sit on like you ride a horse. When she was a few years older, her mom moved her there and she would go to the Pike. She told me that she would talk to this very nice man who worked there, he had a wife and kids. She said he was really super hairy, and when the crowds would come over, he would shoo my mom away to rattle his chains and growl. He was a side show performer at the Pike during the Depression, just an ordinary guy trying to feed his family. My mom graduated from LB Polytech in 1947, she said it was an amazing school. RIP mom, I love you.

I grew up in Long Beach in the 60's and 70's, and it was a paradise to me. If I'd only known back then how beautiful life was in that city, I'd have done much better. But...you're a kid, and you don't appreciate things like you should.

I agree with you! Long Beach was BEAUTIFUL back then!! I was a young boy in the 1960s, and your right about not appreciating things when your a kid.I view many historical photos of Long Beach from the years of the 1930s thru the late 1960s. What a beautiful city it was!!! It was AWESOME!!

Hi, I grew up in Redondo Beach and graduated at Redondo Union High School. We went to the Pike in the mid 1960s with my parents. What a great place that was. I veiwed many photos of Long Beach of it's past and it was amazing. They tore down many historical buildings and that's a shame! If they only keep the Pike and The Cyclone Racer and restored it, it would have been a historical landmark!! People would have visit it from all over the world!

My family moved with the Navy to Los Altos, where my parents bought their first home on Gondar. I grew up through the 50s in the most wonderful extended neighborhood family a kid could ever hope for. Thank you for reviving those memories with this incredible record of a beautiful community. I think I even spotted myself at the grand opening of the shopping center, 'driving' a little red car as it circled round and round on the ride!

I was born in Long Beach in 1941, and my brother, sister, and I all went to Poly High School. That school was established in 1895. I don't know if that is the oldest school there, but it is one of the oldest. Woodrow Wilson was not established until 1926. The tents you see in some of those old photos were taken after the 1933 earthquake.

sherbertdjones Yes, the earthquake was in 1933 and destroyed a major part of the city. I had not been born yet, but my mother told me about what happened. The family was living in an upstairs apartment at the time, and my mother was home with my sister. She had to jump out the window and broke her foot. I believe she said they were without power for a week or two. I remember several earthquakes, some with major damage. I do not miss California.

I grew up in LB. I lived at 1825 Ostrom Avenue right across from Tincher Elem.. I went to Tincher for only one year and then went to St. Joseph's Elementary and graduated in 1965. Our summers were spent hitchhiking to Seal Beach. Sometimes hitchhiked with surfboards. I recall listening to the Beach Boys and Jan n Dean,Ventures, and a lot of other surf music. I can still smell the fishy/salty smell of the air and hear the sounds of the caliope at Pierpoint Landing in my mind.

I'm always curious to see how it used to be here, like I'm nostalgic for an era/time that I didn't exist in. Its really interesting hearing all your stories of being born there years ago and going to school there. I recently found some old yearbooks online, (from long beach schools) so if anyone is curious to find theirs, let me know :)

I too grew up in LB in the 60's and 70's. Even back then keys were left in open cars and front doors and back alike were left open all night. I was a paper boy and at 4 or 5am I would see front doors open all the time. I went to Keller Elementary which just closed its doors this year. DeMille Jr High which is closed torn down and gone forever. I remember hitchhiking to the beach in mid 70's and still there was no danger. Did hundreds of times. I miss that Long Beach.

Born in 1981 in Long Beach, St Marys Hospital! Grew up off of Junipero and Anaheim, East Long Beach. Last child of my parents, whom were among the 50,000 Southeast Asian refugees settled in East Long Beach, (Cambodians, Hmongs, Laotians, Vietnamese, Korats, Chams). Us Southeast Asian refugees and their children have had to put up with alot of bullshit since we landed in Long Beach especially going to war with the Mexicans in the 90s. The Mexicans couldn't push us out of Long Beach! Its 2014, and guess what? We're still here! And guess what now? We got Cambodia town off of Anaheim!!! Im a Long Beach 80s baby. MTV, He-Man, Go See Cal commercials, flock of seagulls. Dad taking us to Queen Mary, the beach, dad dropping off big brother at Wilson high in 1985 (he ended up dropping out, but is now a millionaire). Believe it or not Long Beach was majority white in the 80s, it was nice and diverse. Long Beach has changed alot since my beloved childhood in the 80s....I dont live in in love Long beach anymore but I still love Long Beach!!!.

I wanted to see what the Pike looked like after all these years. Prior to this visit, the last time I went to the pike was in 1967! I was 7 years old at that time when my dad and Mom took me and my three sisters to this amazing amuesment park! It had all sorts of great rides and of course the awesome CYCLONE RACER! What I saw in 1979 was emptiness!!

It. had been. abandon for years, and homeless people were living. in it. It had a huge 25 foot deep swimming pool in it. I remember my days at The Pike. A. K. A. one of the many pleasures growing up in the sixties was my father after discharge from the navy and my birth was frequent trips to terminal Island via the ferry, the navy shipyard to visit his ship, the Desmond bridge and especially the Ford bridge that would raise on occasion right in front of my fathers car and consequently the Thomas bridge when it first opened which ultimately induced Height Fright into me forever, I think it wasn't till I was ten years old before I stopped gritting my teeth the whole time going over, I remember my father stowing away his personal belongings in a locker at a old building by the pike and the tattoo parlors there to, I remember the pike the famous rollercoasters the arcades with real WWII fighters pilot trainers where you could shoot at enemy aircraft for a nickel, I remember the first Long Beach Grand Prix I went to where you could spectate for free along the sidewalks of L.B., I remember the THUMS islands lit up at night. there's nothing that attracts me there now, as Dale Earnhardt said, I "Got All The Good Out Of It".

I lived at 1429 Pine Avenue from 1965 to 1969. A two bedroom house and it is still there--my parents paid $135 rent. I went to Roosevelt Elementary. I was in the small group of white kids. Not a very pleasant time for me in grades 3 to 6. Ms. Williams taught fifth grade. She was a tall, slender, very attractive African-American woman--only out of college a year or two. She used a variety of methods to inflict corporal punishment on the students, which was common at that school.

That arched pier was a great idea. It could be done much better today with the engineering and concrete technology.

Long beach, especially the cyclone racer at the pike, I know people had fun but for me it only bring tears as my mom died on the cyclone racer in 1978, her name was Sandra Magana, her maiden was Sandra Motley, I am Ken Motley. I was not able to spend much time with my mom, she was very young when she had me, I so love her and miss her. I would love to find the rest of my family, ,y grandfather James William Motley, my Uncle Rich Larmen and my Dad John Adrian, where are you guys?

So much of the magnificence is gone like the Municipal Auditorium and Jergin's Trust Building. Hopefully Long Beach will start keeping up with the maintenance of the Queen Mary.

:40 wow i had no idea they were still using horse driven carts in 1980! OK now it make sense, the model T was invented in 1982 and everyone just ditched those poor horses for Henry Fords new gadget.

I was born in Long Beach in 1955. Went to Millikan HIgh. Great place back then. I now live in Wisconsin and am glad I escaped the rot that is now Long Beach today.

Born and raised here 70 years now. It use to be a heck of a lot safer and nicer. Now it's just like any other city in SoCal, over crowded and you have to always watch your back. Definitely not pleasant. Too many a holes pass through this city all the time.

Long Beach is a very diverse city, that's want makes it so great and unique. All walks of life, live and work within the city. I don't like being sheltered in a quiet, rich neighborhood. I want to be exposed to the gritty life of the city.
