The History of Jewish Iran

Join My Jewish Learning and Tehran-born Tabby Refael, for a tour of the long history of Jewish Iran. Dating back 2,700 years, we will explore the origins of one of the oldest minorities in Persian history, and gain an understanding of why the numbers dwindled so dramatically after the Iranian Revolution.

I’m an Iranian from Shiraz. Just to be fair, I should explain that the word “ mahale” doesn’t mean ghetto. It means neighborhood. And I know Jewish people were not poor. In fact they were mostly wealthy businessmen. They were mostly in the fabric and gold jewelry business . As for me, now in my late 50 iz;my favorite photographer was a Jewish man when I was a teenager and lived in Shiraz. He used touched my head to give me a good position for the picture and I never took showers for that reason! Also, I had a Jewish classmate in college who was a swimming coach at the community pool. I mean no one cared that she was a Jew . However, I should say she was forced to take the course in Islamic teachings. And I know it was a new thing. Before that, religion minorities were not required to take the course. Anyway, I know the situation changed for them after the Islamic revolution and she and her family fled to Israel. Regards

Your words about impurity broked my heart!!! There were some idiots who were like that, but I myself am half from Kerman and half from Ardabil and I live in Kerman and we still have Jewish compatriots in Kerman . That the are very dear and important to the people!!! Do not blame the government on our people!!! And there is impurity in Sunnis too!!! And it is interesting to know that today the majority of Iranian people do not see any difference between any religion and many are atheists!!! You are talking about impurity, which was a problem 400 years ago and in contrast to the situation that the Jews had in Europe!!!

Iranian never hate jews , they hate colonial power , British colonial power colonized from india to Egypt. Jewish in iran are always Iranians , there is difference between religion And nationality, my grandfather was Zoroastrianism. If the middle eastern were smart they put religion apart and work together to help each other . The problem is zaionism is just mostly people that escaped nazi To do exactly what Nazis did to them To others. Most Iranian that you mention being Moslem are actually not religious at all, If you truly understand Iranian culture you would know how the Iranian saved Armenians from persecution by the Turks. Jewish culture and Persian culture Is fundamentally the same . It is time for all of us to understand that there is only one race ,the human race

We aint got such a bullshit in our history. They can keep crying about antisemitism and nobody gives a single f to them. They are and were leeches and disgraceful citizens who made money in Iran yet talking shit about Iran and Iranians. There is no single historical fact about Esther Mordecai story and no Persian king ever married a jew. Iranians who you refer as muslim were Zoroastrians before arab invasion and during that time they were forced to convert to this judeo islam bullshit or got executed. Arabs did not bother jews in Iran because they were cousins.

Iran still has between 10,000 and 30,000 Jews/Israe. A few Iranian Jews moved to South East Asia and India in the 1800s and throughout the last few hundred years there were small groups of Persian Jews who returned to their Hebrew ancestral land in Turkish ruled Palestine(ancient Israel) over the centuries but most remained in Persia---later called Iran until Israel got independence when a few thousand Iranian Jews immigrated to Israel between 1948 and 1951. Still most Iranian Jews stayed in Iran till 1978 when Khomeini became the leader of Iran with his Sharia law government. Most Iranian Jews immigrated to Israel between 1978 and 1985 but a smaller group immigrated to America and many became prosperous in communities like Beverley Hills and Long Neck.

Very simple explanation - because to move to another country is hard and because their life is not bad there. It is the same reason why Russian and Ukranian Jews still stay in Russia and Ukraine and they know with all the issues in their respective countries to start life somewhere else will be more difficult. And, yes, if they decide to move most of them would prefer to move to US, Canada or some other places further from the Middle East - it is not much about Zionism any longer , it is about having peaceful comfortable life.

Are you going to talk about those of jewes which they think are just animals and rest.. Why don't you go to some areas to. Israel and talk about it truly. You aren't teaching , you are creating hatred and your personal advances. Where I was born and lived had great neighbors of all different religions and beautiful life. My family and I never talk bad about any people nor any religion. Matter fact we would go for prayer to the tome of Daniel in shosh city. So do it right let's bring people together for a better future for our children. May God bless us all .
