Persians of Israel: Rita

Please note: the full version of this program can be found here: • FULL EPISODE: Persians...
One of Israel’s most successful pop stars, Rita, discovered her love of singing as a child in her native Iran. But it was her family’s migration to the Jewish state that enabled her to build a career as a singer, while also posing challenges that she had to overcome as part of an Iranian immigrant family. Rita’s passion for her Persian heritage eventually led her to produce a Farsi-language album, All My Joys, in 2012. In this Persians of Israel episode, Rita tells VOA’s Michael Lipin how the album’s popularity with Iranians caught her by surprise and inspired her to reach out to the Iranian people. She also reveals how her interactions with Iranians have led her to set a new - and perhaps daring - career goal.

It makes me so upset to hear Persian Jews say they had to hide their Judaism, it breaks my heart. Because they are Persians that are Jewish. They even look so Persian its in their DNA in every way. Love and Peace to my brothers and sisters in beautiful Israel, but to hear they got made fun of there is heart breaking too. Persian Jews are some of the oldest race of Jews in the world, its in history books and the Bible

I have met Your father in an aeroplain (from Helsinki to T-A in some 1999-2000). He was a tall man and very handsome towards Your mother. I stil rember him. He was slim and propably living his last months or weeks. - I lost my father when I was not 10 years; he was droven over by a son of his friend; the boy with his Jaguar had sat in a bridge board with his parets and my father, so that he recognized my fater as a dead body besides of the road. He, the young man with his car, was a son of one of the ritchiest person in Finland then, in 1965. And I was 9 years and to be 10 after two months. I didn´t cry then, and I didn´t cry later in the funerals. I dont cry even today - even thought my mother and both of my brothers are dead and I´m the only one leftb from the family. But I cannot stop crying because what happened some weeks ago in the Sauthern Israel. Rita. Delete all my posts if You want to do so - and delete me too if You feel so. I just met You, but not by any "accident" - it was us; now I say "us" and You may guess what I mean by "us" and with us, You and me, all the Israeli people. I was going to fly to Israel a couple of months ago; I had bought the one way ticket, booked a hotel room at Ben Jehuda for 2 nights, and I knew how to get to Ester HaMalka street and the aliah center there. But a day before my flight I felt that it´s not a good idea - when the streets were full of protesters and everything was out of track; the coalition was dysfunctional and everything was uncertain there. - And now I feel that I should be there with all those people with whom I´m crying day and night. The "erev" was "kachol" and "amok", but not in the way what it was on the roof top of the Mukraby hostel in 1998. Rita. I love You. Please, try to do what I would do in Israel - as a medicine doctor.

Excellent and insightful interview. In ancient times, there was a mutual affinity between Israel and Iran (then Persia) as recorded in the Books of Esther and Daniel. In the present climate such a rapprochement seems highly unlikely. But who knows? Maybe the indominatable will of the people of both nations, rather than the politicians, and religious leaders, can bring this about. Build bridges not walls!

Just to clarify, the animosity that our dear Rita was talking about, is absolutely not between the two nations of Iran and Israel. It’s between the politicians… the current regime in Iran is not representing the majority of Iranian people.

This was not a U.S. diplomatic or military intervention; this was a human interest news story, and the purpose of all such stories is a feel good nurturing of understanding among people. Yes, the news item is from Voice of America, which is funded by-though independent from-the U.S. Government. But that funding is probably costs fractions of a penny from our taxes. And if the U.S. government purpose is not to spend meager change to support independent news that promotes goodwill, then what is the point and purpose of America? To export Coca-Cola and McDonald’s?
