The History of Day Out With Thomas
Ойын-сауық
Day Out With Thomas is the celebration of all things Thomas the Tank Engine that occurs multiple times a year all across the world. In 2019, I visited this event for the first time in 10 years and had an absolute blast. This trip down memory lane inspired me to research to origins of the event and see how far it's come.

I'm 15 years old and I still love Thomas the Tank Engine!
I still remember going to a Day Out With Thomas back when I was 4 in 2004. It was the BEST EXPERIENCE a young child had! Also, I remember I had a Day Out With Thomas T-Shirt. Actually, 10 Years of Thomas was one of my FAVORITE Thomas VHS tapes, because took place at A Day Out With Thomas. I still remember recreating Percy going up the hill and down the hill, well using my leg as the hill. . :’)
One day, I will go to Strasburg for a Day Out with Thomas & Percy.

When i went to day out with Thomas, it was one of the best days of my life
i went to the strasburg thomas back in like 2008 when i was 3, and it still was one of the most magical experiences i’ve ever had
I'm hoping to go to day out with thomas next year because I've been going to the one at Illinois Railway Museum since I was six years old.
And also there was that time when the eyes in Thomas’s smokebox...the steam one not the dummy one did melt....but no one saw that so it was fixed thank god...and thomasdotd said that himself

Good stuff but it would be nice to also bring mention at how the events have evolved through the years. Most notablely, the upgrade to a current accurate CGI face complete with newly added animatronic talking features.

It's impressive to know that this real life Thomas is a robot vehicle with an AI and not a creepy bio fusion
The NVR thomas is my favorite! It is such a massive part of my childhood and i wish to go see thomas again at the Nene Valley Railway.
fun fact: theres thomas events everywhere in every country, even in australia and new zealand, Australia has it at the "puffing billy railway" and new zealand has it at the "glenbrook vintage railway"
When I as little my grandparents had a lake house in Missouri and on the way there like when I was 5 we saw a Thomas on a flat bed truck

I like how you used stock footage of the UK Day Out With Thomas events as well as the US ones. I’m from the UK and I’ve been to 6 DOWT events; my first one was at the East Lancashire Railway, back in 2007 when I was 3.
My oldest brother, me, and my younger sister love Thomas and my family always goes to the Day Out With Thomas in Essex Connecticut. It may not have been as exciting as others, not even having Mavis, but it was still fun :)
I'm from Connecticut and I remember going to a DOWT event with my mom and my brother and sister when i was little at Essex Steam Train and Riverboat. I think i was around 2 or 3 years old and even though i absolutely loved it, seeing Thomas up close scared the living daylights out of me!!!! It was very overwhelming!!!! But i still loved the event as a whole!!!! Me and my brother are now 22 and while he's grown out of it, i am still a HUGE fan to this day and i always will be!!!! T&F is my 2nd favorite franchise alongside Power Rangers!!!! 💙💙👍👍🎉🎉
I actually remember seeing this event when I was at Sacramento just by pure luck. I didn’t really get to ride it but maybe one day I will.
I lovingly remember my day out with Thomas in the early 2000s at the Heber Valley Railroad. While Thomas was cool, the real highlight of the day was getting to go into the cab of one of the railroad's other steam locomotives, and pull the whistle cord. Honestly the pinnacle of my childhood.
Thanks for using parts of my video for the mid hants sections. Nice to see it getting more attention :)
Oh My gosh, I can totally relate. Thomas and Friends has had a massive effect on me too. I started loving Thomas and Friends ever since age 2 1/2, owned at least 7 vhs tapes, and 3 dvds, loved getting engine models and other merchandise, and my collection grew over the years, dancing to the songs, reading the stories, watching the series, the whole enchilada. The only thing I regret not doing is speaking up sooner about going to a day out with Thomas. I went to A day out with Thomas when I was maybe 3 and hardly remember it. However, just last year on November 12, I went to the Day out with Thomas In Parris, CA, and I loved it, despite being 20 years old. I felt very much the same as you did, seeing all those dids was heartmelitng, and just being there was really like a trip down memory lane. It was a good thing I had watche dmost of the reboot that was released by that time, because that was noticed all over. However, it wasn't all the reboot: There were 2 songs played from the original series, a storytelling time was a CGI story, and I say posters of the characters in their original format all over the place too. It truly was a great experience for me.
Me and my twin always grew up going to the Crossroads Village DOWT. We stopped going when we were 10. We're 14 going on 15 now and we wanna go back. VIVA DE REVOLUTION!
He also hold a very special place in my Hart as well too I love that NO.1 cheeky blue British tank engine
The bluebell’s Stepney was already painted in the stroudley improved engine green livery, wilbert awdry just used the loco as a character in the book, to attempt to help promote more interest in preserved railways, as the same with the dean forest’s austerity tank.
I remember my birthday when I turned four I went to day out with Thomas I still remember how much joy it brought me I will never forget it for the rest of my life Thomas and friends got me into steam engines and railroading
I been to a Day Out With Thomas the Train at the Whitewaters Railroad Museum in Connersville IN in 2014
I’m so happy I’m watching this since I’ll be going to strasburg for day out with Thomas in a couple weeks
Spot on video!!! The amount of information given in this video was well researched. It's sad more and more places are dropping the event. My local heritage line in Ohio the CVSR dropped it last year due to the cost of the brand going up for these events.

Don't feel bad I'm 31 and still love trains to this day. I don't think I'll ever forget where my love of trains came from

I'm 13 and a Thomas enthusiast. Core of my childhood.
I guess noone remembers Oigawa Railway Company. When I was little, I never knew of strasburg. Because I only saw Oigawa and really wanted to ride on Hiro. One day maybe.
This made my day Thanks
My family & I rode Thomas @ Tweetsie Railroad many years ago. He & another steam locomotive were pulling the train.
Me As A Kid, I Liked Thomas During My Childhood Years Me As An Adult Now, I Just Like Thomas For The Memes Deep in my heart Thomas will always be my number 1
I’m 13 and I still love Thomas and I went to a day out with Thomas when i was 4
a while back i went to dowt i loved every second of it i wonder how much it's changed
I went to the Conway Scenic Railroad for Day Out with Thomas in 2015! I only went to 2 trips. Once in 2015 and again in 2018. I'm sad that they stopped doing it. It was also probably due to the TV show ending for All Engines Go.
I recently went to the nene valley railway for my birthday but thomas was just sitting in the yard

You can go to day out with Thomas whenever you want. I go every year and boy do I love to go to day out with Thomas.
I was a huge Thomas fan when I was a kid. Unfortunately, where I lived we didn't have a Day out with Thomas (even though there was a museum of transportation with a collection of steam engines), so I never got to enjoy that event.
I got lucky to live an hour away from the first American Thomas land in Massachusetts 😊
Just got back from dowt it was fun! Our family's first time
I still remember when I was like 5 years I watch these cartoons my dad on tv and wake me up with the help of these cartoons bcz they was my fav
I love Thomas so much I wish they still make more Thomas video
6:33 my mouth dropped when i saw that whistle i remember playing with one when i was little

I live in the UK so a day out with thomas is a bit different but I remember riding Thomas when I was about 3 or 5 those were fun days
4:22 where did THAT come from????
At Silverstream Railway there is an old Thomas The Tank Engine he was all rusty and not working anymore also i used to play on him when i was a little boy man those were good times
Wow. Just. Plain. WOW. The fact that HiT Entertainment had the guts to try and SUE other railways for using a character that they thought belonged to them, and forgetting who originally brought Thomas to life (through books AND television)..... that's not only a bad move. That is pure greed at it's WORST!
4:26 I saw that Thomas a few hours ago!
i remember this time i was on a highway and i looked out the window and saw a thomas engine under the bridge, looking back it seems scary but i was so shocked
You’re so lucky I wanted to go to a day out with Thomas event at the Orange County railway museum but my dad thought i was too old for it.

I remember going to edaville to ride Thomas when I was 5 years old
Thomas has been a big part of my life since I first watched it now I’m 12
I guess I might try and attend one in the future but not sure how'd my parents react since I sometimes try to hide it from them but despite that I'm 18 my love my thomas and friends hasn't left my left because if it wasn't for Thomas I'd never find my love and passion for trains
I still like thomas when I was little but now I am 11 I still like it it's my childhood
In England we have lots of day out with Thomas and I went to it for 6 years in a row and at a place near me they had Thomas as a part of their park railway for 10 years I was on its last ever ride before it got moved out the next day to get remade I guess to their new train which runs to this day

Thomas and friends fan for life
I'm not a child anymore but I still love trains & Thomas to this day. I still play with my Thomas trains aswell as my woonden trains that aren't Thomas
you know what would have more better and acturate if the uk railways made annie and clareabell that would have been awsome
Damn the mid hants railway wasn’t kidding when you said that one railway went a step further
God damn I remember the days
The one here in Australia sucks, there’s a real life steam engine dressed up as Thomas but it’s a dead steamer with no coal and you can only get rides from Henry, Toby, and Donald
Other railroads in 2025: we have Thomas GCRM:why am I getting sued for doing what the other railroads are doing Mattel:idk
