The History of Cedar Point and The World's First Hypercoaster Magnum XL-200 | Expedition Cedar Point

Ойын-сауық

Join us on the first episode of Expedition Cedar Point as we take a brief look at the parks history and the creation of the world's first Hypercoaster - Magnum XL 200. This Arrow coaster was the first to break 200 feet and also started the coaster wars with parks aiming to build taller and bigger rides. Following on from this we launch Hypercoaster week looking at some other unique and special over 200 foot coasters.

This was fascinating! The crazy part is Arrow was basically competing with themselves at this point. They could tell the Cedar Park management " well Busch gardens just bought a really cool interlocking looper...." and then sell them whatever crazy idea the Arrow design team came up with.

Expedition Cedar Point? Yes please!!! I'll take anything and everything to do with this park. It's my family's absolute favorite, and we've been going for the past 15 years. There's no other park, in my opinion, that comes close to what Cedar Point delivers. They're trying to amp up King's Island, but there's just something special about Cedar Point. Looking forward to more videos!

Kelsey Logan I live in central Ohio so I am right in the middle between Cedar Point and Kings Island. Cedar Point has more coasters with more variety for sure but I still enjoy them both. They offer different things in my opinion. Cedar Point for thrills, Kings Island for a little more laid back nostalgia. But both parks have a little of both. We visit both parks just about every year.

I'll never forget the very first time I went to CP at age 7 or 8 with my parents and little brother. We went the week before school in 1990 when the park was dead. I went on all the other coasters with no problem, but once I saw Magnum's lift hill I stopped in my tracks contemplating whether or not I wanted to ride. After what seemed like minutes but was actually only a couple seconds I saw my family climbing the stairs to the station and I was like screw it, I guess I'm riding. It absolutely blew me away. The only thing that ever compared to that first Magnum ride was my first ride on Millennium Force. Those are the only two individual rides that have blown me away.

I worked on magnum during the 2018 and 2019 summers. It is an absolutely beautiful ride. Its really thrilling and it one of the most reliable and efficient rides in the park. They will never build a ride like it again, and that makes it even more unique. Also I got to be in it's new POV for it's 30th season operating. I was the ride op pushing the button in the back. I absolutely loved Cedar Point when we went for a school trip during my 4th grade year in the late 90s. An amusement park with everyone in my class that was able to go? Hell yea, sign me up. Some of my favorite memories riding coasters at that park during that trip. Rode so many rides that I still felt like I was on one when riding back to the hotel on the charter bus. I could only rave about that place after leaving and still see it as a great place that Ohioans have to be proud of. I’ve been longing to go back ever since, even if I’m a bit more shy and anxious when it comes to riding coasters as I’ve gotten older.

I was one of the Magnum XL-200 Ride Hosts for the 2015 and 2016 seasons. Absolutely still my favorite ride at that park, both to ride and to operate. In my extensive test rides, I found that the seats in Car 1-Row 3 and Car 6-Row 1 are the best for the airtime. Operating the ride was a nonstop race to get the trains out as quickly as possible. In 3 train operation, there's a time limit set by the automatic brake operations in the Ready Brakes (Brakes just before turning right into the station). If you don't get a train unloaded, loaded, checked and dispatched less than 35 seconds after the previous one clears the lift hill, that previous train will slam into the Safety Brakes after Tunnel 3. Those brakes are so strong, that I've observed Car 3 being lifted off of the track and suspended in the brake caliper while its road wheels spin freely. By my napkin math, the trains leaving that third tunnel are traveling on an average day, 35-40 mph. Timing the impulse of the brakes, I found that they stop the train in less than a second. This makes the Safety brakes stop you with a force of >2G. Naturally something to avoid, so most of the Ride Hosts on platform are trying their best to move things along as quickly and safely as possible. Somehow or another, always being at the edge of getting those trains out on time wasn't very stressful. At one point I was the leadership in charge of the ride for an hour, and set an all time record for the rides current operating system (installed in 2014) for most dispatches in an hour at 44. Based on our testing, I believe the theoretical maximum is 45, but the margin for error is so negligible that it would have to be done like clockwork.

@@ConceptualCoasters You know Phantom, King's Island isn't bad... but my comment was more general beyond just roller coasters. There just ain't much in Ohio to get people excited beyond amusement parks... Despite that, unfortunately when King's Island got bought by Cedar Fair (including the other two parks) it stopped being really about artistry and offering something different for the riders, it became more about "what can we make money on?" While parks try to be more about the latest and greatest, it is more about making money than really exciting visitors and producing something really visionary. Making a profit isn't a bad thing... but when guests to your park become a side consideration and it all comes down to debits and credits on a balance sheet you have a tendency to forget the reason the park is there - to entertain people.

After lowering raise your legs by doing a tippy toes motion with your feet. This will prevent the ride op from stapling you 3. After the train leaves the station hold up the bar with your hand for the entire ride this prevents the bar from coming down and stapling you. If you do this you should avoid the theigh crush issue. Yes you could argue a ride shouldn't have to be ridden this way to enjoy it but Magnum is 30 years old and wasn't designed with computers. It's amazing it even runs at all

Magnum!! It may not be the "best" coaster in the world, maybe not even in the park, but it will always be my favorite. There is nothing like a night ride on Magnum after a hot summer day. Out there in the dark by yourself, the waterpark below silent and the waves of the lake lapping at the shore, you speed through the elements seemingly faster than ever... just flying over every hill, bang, bang! Magnum.

An important part of the Cedar Point story is Geauga Lake. A small park about an hour and a half east. This small park at one point had one of the oldest and tallest wooden roller coasters in the world. It was eventually purchased bu Six Flags and became the largest amusement park in the world. The park was later purchased by Cedar Fair. Do a story on Geauga Lake. I used to work there for 7 summers.

I credit this ride for helping me overcome my fear of roller coasters. I was 8 years old when it opened, but didn't ride it until I was 14. When I was a kid, I was both fascinated by and afraid of coasters; I would ride some of the smaller ones, but didn't really enjoy them, and though I slowly worked my way up to larger ones like Gemini, Magnum was out of the question. Once I rode it, though, I was hooked, and I've been a coaster nut ever since. Thanks, Magnum!

Thank you for such an informative video, I grew up going to Cedar Point every summer when I was a kid. We stayed at the Breakers most years. I do remember years where we only went for the day, most likely during tough economic years on my father, but our parents would never let us as kids know it at the time. I remember feeling like it was something special, like not all the kids I knew were able to. A few years later as my two sisters and I got a bit older were always allowed to bring our friends with us. I remember the first year our parents got two rooms, so they could have a bit of a vacation themselves. And we had a bit of freedom. So it was pretty cool to be there for a few days with someone ya knew and had free roam of the place. The first few years I remember not being tall enough to get on the Roller coasters, which was fine with me I was scared of the big rides. That was in the early eighty's, the only big coasters at the time were the Blue Streak, Corkscrew, and the Gemini. I remember that first year when I was finally tall enough to ride the roller coasters and my younger sister wasn't yet, so we tried to 80's up her hair with Aquanet, so she was tall enough, and it worked!! We rode the Blue Streak first, then the Corkscrew and last to ride was the Gemini but I was terrified, my older sister got me to go on with her. I was scared to death the whole way up the first hill, but rode more times in the next few days. Lots of great memories of Cedar Point, first time I got a kiss from a girl was in the video game arcade located on the midway under the chairlift , lol. I haven't been to the park in many years since moving out of Ohio. I have been to many Six Flags parks over the years, they all seem rather small compared to Cedar Point. Thanks for bringing back many great memories of that place. Seeing this video really brought it back for me. Must make future plans for a visit.

Cedar Point is my home park, and the legendary profile of the park is not overstated at all. It's a destination for anyone who loves these machines. The size, variety of manufacturing companies present, designs, and historic significance of most of these coasters is akin to going to a living museum. My only complaint is wanting another good wooden coaster, maybe something by the Gravity Group. I would also love to see a Gerstlauer Euro-Fighter coaster built indoors to recreate/re-envision Disaster Transport when it was at its prime. I want to add that the park has more rides in general than any other amusement park, so there are a lot of flat rides and kids rides for people to enjoy. They could probably use a new dark ride, but there is a lot to do, plus the beach is fantastic. It's really one of the best amusement parks in the world.

Definitely “thumbs up” for your wonderful video. There’s so much I want to say... Grew up in Toledo, so my family went every summer. Plenty of glorious memories from those days as a park guest. Just magical times. In college, I interviewed and was hired, so I was able to go behind the scenes and be a part of the “magic”. Worked there 3 summers (the Mill Race/Midway Carousel) then Kiddie Land and then White Water Landing). In those days, being a seasonal park, most of the employees were college students, like me, who were housed in dorms, so there was a lot of youth & energy. I would have to say, those were some of the most memorable, fun days of my life. As an employee, it was normal for us to refer to the park guests as “animals” behind their backs. (“I just caught some animals trying to cut in line, tried to leave to get food and then get back in line.” “The animals are even more aggressive to get into the ride than normal.” “You wont believe the mess the animals left at the french fry stand!!”) One day, while running the merry-go-round in Kiddieland, a man with his 9 year old asked me, “Do you guys still call the park guests ‘animals’?” He said he used to work there years ago, and that was the term they used. I confided to him, “Yup. Still do!” I moved to L.A. after college, but returned to Toledo in 2011 for a visit. Went with the family to Cedar Point, so I revisited places like Kiddieland. I popped my head into the Lost Kids building to ask if they still called park guests”animals”. There was an employee, an older man, not a college student. Thinking management is now trying to hire toward more diversity. I asked my “animals” question to him and...he seemed to have no clue what I was talking about. I guess, somehow, management curbed that bad habit amongst employees!! All in all, I cherish those days. The lights, the sounds, the smells, the camaraderie, the fun. I thank you for this video and the memories...
