    This shit is so cool man, I really appreciate you putting this on KZread. Everything is great, but I especially dig your performance of the maple leaf. Feeling it in cut time like that hits way different than any rendition I've heard of it. It feels authentic. I've been practicing it up feeling it in cut time ever since I heard you play it that way. You're a great player and a true steward of ragtime and blues piano. Its an amazing genre of music and we need people like you to keep it alive. Thank you so much.

    Thanks for the comment, man! Super glad you dig it. And haha, to be honest, i don't know the difference between cut time and 2/4 . I definitely like to play it in a stompy fashion, really accentuating the down beat. That, combined with keeping the melody pushing in front of the beat, i think gives a really cool swinging feel.. This is kind of the trick or magic of ragtime, imo : creating a swinging feeling without actually swinging the beat. One master of this feel is the late great Paul Lingle! Highly recommend checking him out. Also, in case you've not seen it, I also posted a stand alone video of maple leaf, and i recorded on my new album "The Bigtone Session". Best, ethan

    Interesting to hear how stride had its origins in marches, it makes sense. I've thought the 'oom-pah' stuff I hear in Polka could arguably relate to jazz swing with its syncopated 8th notes.

    I think he has a fair amount of variety in his playing, and by blues piano standards, he produced a ton of original melodic material. Interesting choice with his patented Eb ending, but the way I look at it, the pieces weren't ever meant to end. They were supposed to go on all night, while the folks kept right on dancing.

  • @spo-dee-o-dee5399
    @spo-dee-o-dee53994 жыл бұрын

    Fascinating stuff and great to hear these tunes played out in your own style. I may be over-reaching but as I understand it part of your thesis of why barrelhouse is "lost" is that, unlike ragtime, it wasn't disseminated through transcriptions/sheet music so never had the popular appeal and even the recordings were often micro-regional therefor never travelled. The Cow Cow riff is a good example - passed from player to player - but not the context for Ray Charles dropping it into a jam. Ahmet Ertegun, Atlantic mogul and credited writer of "Mess Around" claimed he got it from Pete Johnson. Johnson got it from x, etc... Part of the problem of trying to historicize music is that is often doesn't leave tangible traces or documentation or as you point out doesn't fit a popular narrative - blues as folky, rural, crude, guitar based as opposed to blues as sophisticated and urban played on the almighty piano which requires training, technique or at the very least incredible dexterity to play stride or ostinato bass at speed

  • @EthanLeinwand

    @EthanLeinwand

    4 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for comment! When I think I about micro-regional recordings and their geographical reach, the first thing that comes to mind is Robert Johnson. Even though his records didn't necessarily travel well in his time, he's since become one of the most popular and "important" artists. Therefore, I'd have to say that the regional aspect of certain barrelhouse recordings is not much of a factor in why this music is lost. Rather, as you say, it's all about prevailing narratives. Cow Cow is a great song to consider here. Firstly, it's roots go back to the ragtime era, and the theme shows up in multiple pieces of sheet music. But, the importance of ragtime in early blues is generally not a part of the blues narrative, so we lose that connection. Further, Ertegun credits Pete Johnson, so he's connecting this tune to boogie-woogie, which is great! But, the story of boogie-woogie generally is in such a rush to get to 1939, that it's not put properly in context, and barrelhouse of the 20s and piano blues of the 30s gets glossed over or left out. So in the end, the link is severed on both ends! The ragtime narrative doesn't lead to barrelhouse and the boogie-woogie narrative doesn't trace back to barrelhouse. To me, this is one of the main reasons this music is "lost" today.
