    I still remember the days when I woke up in the middle of the night just to listen to Steve's Keynotes. Not many people mention the Newton, I spent all my pocket money and borrow some from Dad to buy the Newton2000 and loved it, still using it today. I think we still have the old Apple IIe somewhere in Dad's Garage, def will restore it one day when time permits. Thanks for the fond memories.

    Hey! After 10 years, I’ve decided to allow comments again. Please be respectful to others as a video about Apple History isn’t really the forum to air anger at Apple or just moan about the price of their products.

    It was a genuine possibility! Xerox had everything that you’d later see become important in computing and operating systems! But the Star and Alto just didn’t have support in the company to be turned into viable mass market products. As Steve Jobs said “They were copier-heads.”

    Steve Jobs: Nobody wants a Stylus! Apple: Sells the Apple Pencil

  • @hhgttm

    @hhgttm

    Жыл бұрын

    I have an Apple Pencil. Never use it though. And while the Pencil is great for drawing, I certainly would not want to have to get one out every time I wanted to use my phone. When I worked in a shop selling Apple products, a lot of older people would come in and buy these imprecise styluses, because they found that easier than shaky hands, but the vast majority definitely don't want to be forced to use a stylus.

    Spindler really fell off the earth after his Apple days, didn’t he? I tried researching where he’d been for the past 25 years and came up with nothing; though if I’m remembering correctly, I think he passed away 2 or 3 years ago.

    Yeah, a quick web search confirms he died in 2017. Not sure if there's just so much focus on Spindler and Amelio during their time at Apple that what comes after just isn't thought of as interesting... or if they just weren't able to get a job afterwards... or if the jobs they did were just too boring for anyone to care about whether they'd been Apple CEO or not!

    Not sure what you’re defining as “that time,” but Apple have definitely always produced more expensive hardware than others. Some of their products could be argued to offer better value than the some of their competition - though just how good the comparable value is varies wildly from product to product. Personally, I feel that currently, Apple’s products offer nearly the worst value compared to the competition at time of purchase. However, that changes when it comes to long term value, where I think they still have the edge in both phones and PCs. But that’s a subjective opinion!

    @@hhgttm Yes, I still remember these times, when I was working as a graphic designer and all the time was afraid that I would have to switch to win soon. In my opinion the iPod was the device that rescued Apple and made it the cool and trendy company it is today. The iPhone, iPad and AppleWatch are just logical successors of it. The iMac and G3/G4 were awesome designed computers but without the iPod Apple would never have developed to this enormous powerful company it is today - consider: there are still overwhelming more win systems out there than Macs.

  • @hhgttm

    Mr Ki - you’re right, but there are many Windows PC manufacturers and I’m glad the Mac is there! The iPod was definitely an important product that brought Apple to a much wider audience. The iPhone and all the diverse products since wouldn’t have been possible if the iPod hadn’t been the first Apple product with enormous mass market appeal beyond the computer market.

    The initial Mac was not well received because it cost $2500 in 1984 and only had one floppy and 128k ram; you could get a PC clone with a hard drive and more ram for that price. In 1985 MS Windows came out with color support. Since then Apple's share of the PC market was small. The iPhone and iPod became their principle products when they arrived... but OK they are really computers - not phones.

Depends what your specific area of interest is! folklore.org is amazing if you want to know more about the original Mac - though some of the articles were removed and now appear in the book "Revolution in the Valley" by Andy Hertzfeld. I personally really enjoyed Steve Wozniak's biography - iWoz. The official Steve Jobs biography is a really interesting too. If you let me know any specific bits of Apple history that interest you, I'll see if I can make any recommendations! I'm currently seriously writing material for a more in depth follow-up video series so have a lot of resources in my internet history right now!

    The Mac wasn't even the best graphics computer - not supporting on screen color until later 1987- they did lead in desktop publishing. They were not the first "modern" laptop maker either - the Grid compass made in 1982 is usually considered the first clamshell laptop; not some apple made in 1989 or 1991 are you kidding me? If you don't like that check out the data General 1 made in 1984. If CADD is a graphics professionals area, Apple had zero part of it as they never supported floating point processor chips as the PCs did. So Autocad was a huge business of top end computers and giant screens unavailable to Apple users.
