that's a shame. Not sure why Naim turned to alcohol after he retired, but it seems that some pro athletes have problem coping with regular lives after they retire, with some resorting to drug use. It's always sad.

Every great champion needs a strong rival. Valerius was the only one that pushed the legend to his limits. Because he is a legend too. Naim was a champion out of this world and won everything without competition. Valerius was the one that could stand next to him, compete with him, end even if he was a little more lucky win him.. He didn’t.. but he was not unlucky. They offered the world the most amazing contest in weightlifting history with world records breaking one after another. They became best friends, they respected each other. And when Valerius told him “Naim you re the best” he replied “No Valerius, we are both the best”. Rest In Peace Naim. Here in Greece we love you.

I'm a greek man that dreamed of the day that Turkey would be awarded the Olympic games so that the whole world would get a chance to see Naim get his chance to light the Olympic cauldron. It speaks to the kind of athlete and the kind of man that Naim Suleymanoglu was. He was the purest lifter ever and the greatest example of sportsmanship. He would have won 4 olympic gold medals in 4 olympiads if the land of his birth did not boycott the 1984 games. Politics got in the way once again. Thanks for the memories, Naim. You touched a lot of lives and inspired many people. RIP.

I am a Bulgarian.I am not a communist.I respect Naim's choice to defect in Turkey, although he never has been oppressed by the rulers of Bulgaria.This has been true for all sportsmen in my country.Naim was discovered and trained by Ivan Arabadgievand even on this Olimpiade ,so many years after he defected,Arabadgiev is still his trainer.I believe that Bulgaria made him a champion.If he was born in Turkey,nobody would pay attention to him.His talant would be wasted.

I was 11 years old when I saw this, in a Turkish coastal town on the Aegean sea. It was night time, and we could see the lights of the Greek island of Kos. We knew that they were watching it too. We were seperated by a small strait of sea, yet two competitors from both countries were writing history while the whole world held its breath. I remember the incredible silence before every lift, and the glory after each succesful Naim attempt, our joy after the final unsuccesful lift of Leonidis. Everyone, literally everyone was crying. It's been more than 20 years, and I've watched this video maybe more than 50 times, but it takes me to that day each time I see it and I still get cramps in my stomatch every time I watch it. Naim and Leonidis became close friends over the years and Leonidis attended Naim's funeral on November 19. 2017. True sporstsman both of them. Rest in peace Naim Süleymanoğlu, we will always remember you with love and respect.

2 great guys. Sadly Naim is gone and can't return the favor of his presence eventually with Leonidis, but he'll be there in spirit.

Nice to see that the athletes were friendly to each other, spreading the Olympic spirit. Greece and Turkey have had a lot of clashes and its nice to see that people representing the two countries are modest and they understand the true message of Olympic sports: peace and sportsmanship between them. Love from Greece to our beautiful neighbour, Turkey!

Latissimus Dorsi None of these lifters from that era "abused" steroids, they still were getting tested frequently. Naim was known to smoke 2 packs of cigarettes every day and drink alcohol every now and then. People speculate this could've been a reason for his early death.

I was there in the crowd. I was 18 at the time. My dad is blatantly in the video. He is the guy in the red shirt holding a small black megaphone in front of the Turkish crowd. Although dead quiet during the actual lifts, the crowd was singing and chanting with overflowing energy at all other times. It was awesome.

I believe what Naim was saying is that he never could have lifted such weight without being pushed by the competition of Valerios. As he said in the beginning, he spent a large part of his career without any real competition. It was only when Valerios came along that Naim was forced to truly push himself to his limits, and that without this spirit of competition he never would have pushed himself that far.

I was working in the Olympic village and actually met him as he was waiting for his bus to practice, talking with his Bulgarian weightlifter friends. Later I saw this competition in the Olympic village rec room for the athletes, it was the most amazing weightlifting competition I'd ever seen, easily...

Today Valerios was present at Naim's funeral and said goodbye to his friend and arch rival. Respect to two great and humble sportsmen!

This duello is unforgettable. Two legends.

One of the most inspiring stories in the history of Olympics, they showed the true spirit of sportsmanship! "Once you push your self hard, the opponent will push himself harder"

Man, to this day I believe this is the most intense, epic and honourable olympic competition I have witnessed. Both of them amazing athletes and Naim one of the best weightlifters in history. Sad to hear he passed away.

WELL I want to tell you then, Naim Got the GOLD lol

I remember this being highlighted by NBC in the 1996 Olympics. Exactly 10 years later I purchased from Jim Schmitz a VHS collection of the weightlifting competition in the Atlanta, Olympics 1996. Nearly the entire competition was covered and was in real time, no editing, commercials etc. It was incredible. This film presentation really impressed me because the lifters were profiled. Both nations should be proud of their respected lifters. Both were champions on and off the platform.

Naim is a class act! He told the Greek after all was done and said "No, we are both the best"!

Obviously the competition was incredible, but I want to give a shout out to the production of the video. It is one of the best sports presentations I have seen. The announcer sets up what is happening clearly, but there is no commentary over the actual lifts. If you don't know the results, you can watch this almost as if it was live. It creates a lot of tension and makes you feel what is happening. Very well done.

Leonidis how you are loyal man! I watched this video many times and cry. You celebrated Naim altough you were very sad and when he died you came to his funeral. Both of you big man in history and your names were written with golden letters. Thanks for you. Loves from Turkey.

What an amazing video. Valerios actually come to say farewell to Naim at his funeral and kissed the coffin. Much respect to both of these athletes, who are maybe the best weightlifters of the century.

I'm Turkish and love Greece and its people. Turkey owes so much to its past Greek heritage, still alive in the Turkish cuisine, music and life. We are the same, let's admit that. :)

i still can remember the time while i was watching this incredible competition for the olympic gold. I was a little kid at that time but really excited. Of course, we were supporting Naim, but i also respect to Leonidis. We were so confident for the gold for Naim and Turkey, but really nervous on last 2 lifts which Naim could do and Leonidas could not. Truely amazing. Naim still is a big figure here in Turkey...

Wow. Just wow. That was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. Almost brought tears to my eyes. Brilliant stuff and a nice (temporary) diversion from all the hate and misery of today's world.

I'd rather be a famous athlete than a famous actor...being an olympian makes a whole lot of difference, it brings honor to yourself, your family and your own country...I love any kind of sports and the ahtleticism that it brings. It teaches discipline and how to be passionate on what you choose to do.

They offered the world the most amazing contest in weightlifting history with world records breaking one after another. the guy in the red by Naim is Arabadziev the man who found Naim in Bulgaria and made him a champion, like many others. He deserves some credit too

It's about to possibilities.. Naim was a God for lifting. And some mortal soul came up and says " i compete the God " Thats the important thing i think. Leonidis is a greatest athele all of the time cause he compete against a God. Both of you best... RIP Naim.

Naim is a True, humble legend. Now there is a movie about his life. I wont miss it.

i watched this movie again tonight. in some cases I wished that Leonidis would win to make it equaly.. i just learned that Naim passed away today in Turkey. as being a turkish citizen who considers herself as humanist, love the amazing legacy Naim left to us.. wish that we could have more of Leonidis and Naim everywhere around the world.

I’m a track and field guy but this wasn’t the most intense competitions I’ve ever seen in sports. Absolutely amazing what these men can do. Big respect to both the Turkish and Greek lifters. Too bad somebody had to come in second. Both are champions.

I remember watching this live, as a kid, it was such a competetion! As a Turk, i was (and still am) so proud, Naim was a great champion, as well as a great person. Now, i can see he was a great rival too, proud to watch him, proud to witness his marvels. He was the best heavy-lifter ever. When we lost him, i felt like i lossed a close friend or relative. Wish him best for the after life. And respects to Valerios too, for being in this elegant rivalry. Hope we can see such rivalries again and in many sports.

this kind of rivalry and sportsmanship makes one emotional. to this day, this is the most incredible battle in weightlifting history and one of the most historic rivalries in ALL of sports' history.

Thank you Bulgaria and thank you Mr. Ivan Abadjiev (Naims personal trainer) for Naim And of course thanks to his parents and thanks to him for his hard work!

Naim Suleymanoglu sadly passed away yesterday. Leonidis attended the funeral in Istanbul. They showed us what true sportsmanship is and they will always be remembered as legends as they are.

This is what our sportsmen should be like... So much integrity and honour. True Gladiators
