The Himbo Trope, Explained

Ойын-сауық

The first 1000 people to use the link will get a free trial of Skillshare Premium Membership: skl.sh/thetake12202 | The brainless bombshell known as the bimbo is one of our most familiar tropes, but recently, a new brand of halfwit hottie has been gaining recognition. Enter the himbo. Like their bimbo counterparts, the requirements for a himbo are simple: They’re hot, kind… and kind of stupid. But in a world that’s become more flexible about gender norms, while more critically examining manhood in the wake of MeToo, the himbo also suggests an answer to the toxic masculinity perpetuated by cynics and so-called nice guys. Here’s our Take on the himbo as a model of a more modern idea of manhood, and what we can learn from the character who knows he’s not the smartest person in the room.

So in the George of the Jungle live action movie with Brendan Fraser, there's that scene (that someone graciously uploaded to youtube) with him playing with horses while all of Ursula's friends just ogle him. Anyway, Ursula's trying to explain that despite being pretty dumb, he's not entirely stupid, and her best friend chimes in, describing him as having "Sensual Intelligence."

An ATTRACTIVE man... But make him have emotional intelligence, respect and tenderness. I have no issues being the partner Emotional intelligence is incredibly important in the building of a solid and long-term romantic relationship, and I would like at least an equal if not someone who's better than me at stuff like communicating our feelings, expectations and needs, supporting each other and showing love and respect. I'm not the most socially skilled person, and I'd feel more comfortable in a relationship with someone who's more competent than me in that area. Viceversa, I really don't see how useful would be having a partner with my same high QI score and low social skills. I can work with that if there's love of course, but I don't see how 'logical intelligence' should be higher than 'emotional intelligence' and 'being sexually attractive' in my imaginary Ideal Partner's Requirements List. If 'being a man' means 'making your partner feel loved and secure within your relationship', then different people need different men in their lives, and for many a himbo could be the best manly men they could ever need to feel loved and safe.

That is, women are, in fact, more attracted to the idea of a well-meaning, respectful Chad than to a self-pitying "Nerd", who is as harmful to them as the Gaston version of Chad would be.

The only difference is women are lauded for doing it while men are told to suck it up lmao. It's usually okay though because most men usually want to measure up to the best, instead of making the best measure down to them lol.

I'm not conviced about Geralt. He's not an idiot. Given the fact he's managed to survive in a world where everyone around him wants to kill him, and he does one of the most dangerous jobs in the universe, he clearly has a decent amount of intelligence. Jaskier would fit the trope more. I'm sure someone who read the books more would have better examples, but I dont get a himbo vibe from Geralt.

As much as I love this take on himbos and the future of masculinity, it does bother me that intelligence is looked down upon in romantic relationships. Both himbos and bimbos are, at their core, sexist. A role reversal of gender roles can serve as a way to highlight the issue, but using it as a solution won't solve anything. In fact, it will probably just create a perpetual cycle of "action" and "reaction". In my eyes, the himbo is the 21st century take on prince charming, and the bimbo is the 21st century take on the damsel in distress. After all, two of the defining traits of a prince charming is ... that he looks good and respects women in a societally acceptable way. And one of the defining traits of a damsel in distress is that she's just a price with no critical thinking skills. So instead of looking down upon smart people for being "cynical" or "bossy", it might be time to allow them to find a way to actually move on from the sexist idea that gender defines anything besides your biological features. (Admittedly, I stole this idea from a genderless society from Angela Carter.)

@@viharsarok they’re just nice? That’s the Himbos’ whole thing. Women shouldn’t get special treatment just for it to count as being respected. Someone just being nice without ulterior motives is good enough. And himbos can harm women, they choose not to. That choice not to hurt and instead to be kind to us is what is attractive, not them being dumb itself. Someone put it in the comments best, someone who chooses to do the kind choice instead of the smart choice is a himbo, which means that himbos can often look dumb even if they’re pretty clever, because they still make dumb choices. That’s why I love All Might as a himbo, even if canonically he’s an intelligent hero who uses stratagems on the daily to fight baddies and teaches a hero class lol. He just fumbles a lot due to his choices, like needing to read a teaching for dummies novel because he’s never done it before but still wants to be a good teacher or choosing a reckless quirkless kid as a successor because he’s got a kind heart. So yeah, dumbness as a requirement by itself looks bad, but it’s not a fair reading to say that a hot, easy to manipulate idiot is the ideal we’re talking about when most comments stress that it’s the respect we desire.

No he isn't. I don't even really get why they say it about him based on the show, much less based on the books. He doesn't talk much, but he's good at reading people and thinks very strategically about solving complex problems. Usually, he's the smartest person in the room having to deal with the village idiot of the week who thinks himself smarter than everyone. He's basically a clever inversion of the 'big, bulky warrior guy' trope and everyone automatically assumes because of his looks that he is a brute, while in actuality he's far away from it.

He took his time showing expressive smart thoughts, but it was increasingly noticeable how he made pretty good use of his capacities to notice stuff that others didn't notice because each one of the main cast had their different patterns of thinking. We learned to appreciate his character because he showed their was a wisdom to his way of living even if that wisdom was limited. But that was fitting because each character was limited in their own way and it came so well together. Except Janet. She actually did know everything...in her way.

The frat boy is also called a Chad. Other that maybe good looks he isn't anything like a himbo.

The Himbo is the idealized male personality as Manic Pixie Girl is to females. All of us can learn positive things from them. Can you imagine a Himbo and a Manic Pixie Girl as a pair, either romantic or platonic, it'll just be positivity every time you are with them.

I fully approve of labeling Gerault of Rivia as a Himbo.

@Ru paul you know that's not what it means, right? And there is a difference between having their own respect, and your respect?

@Ru paul they "DIDN'T MAKE HIM FOR YOU!" And if you were paying any attention, misplaced self-confidence is clearly why women find them attractive. So you still have hope.

@Ru paul My dear friend, I may be a lesbian, but I am also ugly as shit and happily married. If I can do it with a very limited dating pool, so can you. Lose the Incel attitude and remember that women are just people and you'll be fine. Maybe watch Dr. K's session with an Incel.
