Yes, I call this the taming of the Shrew. A strong, powerful woman who goes against the expectations of society is "tamed" by our boring male lead to fall into the expectations she once rebelled against. It often comes from the fact that men have been routinely taught to go after women who don't accept their advances. Thus, if she does not fall into gender based expectations, she's just playing hard to get. However, the same men who go after such women have no interest in her actual ideas, they still want her to fall into her gender expectations

That's how it works whenever you go from fitting in and being part of the majority to standing out and being an uncommon minority. You go from common to special, admittedly, it can feel nice, but it can go wrong very easily as well.

as a brazilian girl who lived in scotland for half a year i almost grew accustomed to being called exotic, foxy, spicy and once even a "brazilian sl*t". It's crazy how much these stereotypes affect us irl.

Not really ....many of these latinas are white women themselves. Sofia Vergara for example is fully European on both sides of her family. Just two white cultures mixing. Yes "Latino" culture is largely white with many other distinct practices but it is largely based on "Latin culture". Which is found in southern Europe.

@@jamiemohan2049 we are talking about culture here, for the most part there is absolutely no difference in the culture of white latinos and other latinos, unless they are of recent immigrant stock. And even then, latin america unlike north america is very homogeneous in terms of culture, it is very conservative and they are not very politically correct, they will pressure you into following their culture and most descendants of immigrants will. For this reason a lot of their immigrants are people from other catholic and Latin speaking nations. So yeah, if you meet a black and a white latino from the same country. Latin america did not go through segregation, and because of this you have people of all races that have had to interact mix and share with eachother for generations. So it is nowhere near as divided, or tribalistic as it is in the US where each race developed in completely different circumstances

@@TuAmigoElMorrocoy I wouldn't consider Latin America to be homogenous, many people are mixed with native indigenous south Americans and whites. Many others are also mixed with Africans. Large populations are also fully white and native in some parts with no admixture. So I'd say south America is very diverse lol. Just that a good few of the women in the video were white, others in the video were not white.

I loved that movie growing up (Fools Rush In), and always genuinely saw it as a movie about accepting and embracing different cultures. The greatest love of my life is a Latina/Black woman and being a part of her family taught me so much about embracing and understanding the differences in familial culture that exist in the world. To be fair, I'm not a boring white guy, more a gender fluid boi!!! HAHA.

To be fair, I personally know lots of Latin women (including my mother) who end up with a boring white guy (my step-dad) because they've been burned by the passionate, short-tempered, unfaithful and economically unreliable Latin men (my father, uncles and most of my male cousins). So this stereotype comes from a place of truth. But I also yearn for the emotionally stable, level headed, and sometimes even neurotic Latin characters (I refuse to use the term "latinx," created by gringos).

This is why having charachters like flora winx club are so important, having a cottage core sweet feminine latina/afro latina charachter that wasnt aggressive

Exactly! There are some Chilean and Argentine latinas/latinos that live in the actual snow and mountains (beautiful places like Patagonia, Los Andes in the south of Chile and Argentina) but Americans are not ready to talk about it...

What’s also frustrating is how often people assume Latin = Mexican. Just like Asian = Chinese/Japanese. Or how people refer to Africa as if it’s a country and not a continent. Intersectionality exists and one person of color will not have the same exact experience as another, even in the same race/ethnicity, due to other factors, like age, gender, religion, etc. The world is full of diverse languages, cultures, and ethnic backgrounds, and people should not be reduced and pigeonholed into one single identity and experience.

It's because the United States trains its citizens to only think in black and white - both figuratively and literally. Ethnicity is so much more important than race, because that's where your culture comes from, and with the age of the Internet, lots of racially and socioeconomically diverse people are coming together to share ethnicity. It's really beautiful; and sad that bigots are too proud to be a part of it.

And not all Latinos are even PoC - there’s tons of white Latinos, exactly those who’re in spotlight in Latin American novelas and movies and when come to the U.S are often counted are “diverse”. Example: Henry Zaga, a white Brazilian, who was cast as Sunspot on the New Mutants movie, a character who was originally black Brazilian (therefore, whitewashing amongst Latinos). Besides most of Latin American elites are still very white. Therefore I mean: there must be more diversity of Latinos in general, including regarding race/ethnicity since, contrary to the gringo stereotype, it can’t be itself considered “a race”, but a very broad cultural identity.

You also need to dig into why Latinas in the media are almost always portrayed looking like Jennifer Lopez or Sofia Vergara--even though Latinas come in shades that range from J-Lo's color to Lupita Nyong'o's, and with hair textures that range from straight to afro.

If I’m dressed in a “sexy” way it’s for me, the gays, and het women friends, but mostly for me. And definitely not for any sort of het male gaze. I just like feeling cute. Haha. Also if I’m speaking in Spanish, there’s a higher chance that I’m displeased in some way. Haha. Or I’m on the phone with my parents.

We need to talk more about Afro Latinas. There is this perception that Latinas look a certain way, but what many don't realize is that we come in different shades and races. Latin and American media are to blame for all the stereotypes.

I’m a light Afro Latina and my mom is black and my dad is Latino, but I don’t know how to speak Spanish or basically anything about the culture 😅 but the last time I saw my dad was in October so...but really I don’t think I’ll ever really claim the Latino side, I’m too whitewashed for that, so I claim the black side bc it was easier to learn about and remember. Also my mom is 🇭🇹 and my dad is 🇵🇷🇬🇹 but I do see my puerto rican grandmother and my cousins are also my same mix.

as a "sexy latina" one of the shittiest things about this stereotype is how it creates an excuse for sexual harrassment and sexual assault. it also reduces our emotions: it's like when we're mad about something our points aren't fully conveyed bc people won't take them seriously. one is usually called "sassy" and that's about it, we're not really heard.

I hear you. If it makes you feel any better that's applied to all women. Anger is only an acceptable emotion in men. For the women it's so often: I bet she's on her period / just needs an actual man to f** her right. It's an idiotic stereotype. The only "good" thing about the spicy Latin stereotype is that it's accepted to display anger. Yes, it's not going to be taken seriously. In black women for example the mere display of anger often gets viciously ridiculed and punished. That also applies to all women but due to the Jezebel stereotype people get irritated with black and women super quick. Of course this way neither Latin nor black women can learn to express our deal with anger in a healthy. It sucks.

We're both Caucasian Latinas, her having SOME mestizo in her lineage, but as stand alone people we constantly get mistaken for Italian or French or Jewish or possibly Greek. But when she and I are together but alone, the sexual harassment was always constant. Dangerous and aggressive. And she'd ask me, "Nati but WHY ALWAYS US? Wow what a stunners a model. But 2 super curvy waspt waisted huge boobied and butted Raven haired loud mouths who like to dress up an dance? The culture has instructed men to consider that an open invitation to sex. It's also bc FOR REAL FOR REAL? Our body type are NEVER seen anywhere other than porn or rap videos. Ever. I'm so sorry to hear that, that must be the worst feeling. Not to downplay your experience but a lot of women of other races can experience this as well when voicing complaints. Black women immediately receive the "loud angry black woman" label. Girly-girls who aren't imposing or intimidating are considered "whiny and annoying" or "weak." Hot white girls are brushed off as "crazy." If you don't deliberately put in effort to come across as calm and rational, society will always want to dismiss you as a joke. It's not cool when it happens to anybody and I'm so sorry you have to experience that.

As an introverted Latina, April Ludgate from Parks and Rec is pretty much the only Latin-American character I’ll ever identify with.

I´m brazilian, sometimes I just don´t understand Sofia, I love Modern Family and I really like her she is a really funny comedian but some jokes about Gloria and latinos in general bother me( mostly in the first season) like when they are seen as criminals or theives, I think if was a brazilian character I woud be offended, I don´t know so much about Colombia or how colombians see that but Sofia seems ok with these jokes and I think I can´t judge her for it.

@S Meza the problem with using hate is that the person, Luis, takes away the humanity and individuality of Sofia and her decisions with out framing the person. Ironically this is what using stereotypes is doing so blaming the person rather than the reasons as to why they had to use the stereotypes to succeed.

I have been reading comics at webtoon, the female asian characters are always weak and submissive with low self esteem but latinas are portrayed as strong and independent women. I think asian women should be seen in the same way. All asian women that I have met are strong, funny and adventurous.

in brazil, the trope for asian-brazilians is usually like that, strong and independent, when represented at all

It’s crazy that the spicy Latina archetype has similar quality’s to the “angry black woman” or “Jazabel”, but because of her proximity to whiteness she is desired and gawked over. Latinx characters are seen as different enough from white people to be exotic but close enough to whiteness where we can be loved and accepted smh Edit : I also wanted to add that the above mentioned phenomena has to do with the whole archetype that Latinos are Eurocentric, tanned, dark haired mysterious people with amazing bodies aka curvy or masculine. It further perpetuates their whole complex of Latinos being desired by non Latino white people, more specifically white Americans.

@@rubyrose6460 Latin america can also be taken in a very literal sense: people born in america with latin roots. Note here that latin can mean spanish but also portuguese (brazilians) and french (quebecois) since they are also languages rooted in latin. People from the rest of Canada and US are anglo saxon, thus not latin americans. It would indeed be easier to all be called American, as these labels really don't take in account the very wide cultural differences between the communities themselves.

Let's also talk about the amount of white men who come to Latin American countries and think they're entitled to grab and harrass latinas because of the stereotypes they've been fed by media about us being oh-so-sexual. Also, not directly related, but it'd be nice if Hollywood realized that latinx does not equal Spanish speaking. Us Brazilians exist (millions of us!) and are as much part of Latin America as our Spanish speaking neighbours.

It's because there is so much confusion between the terms Hispanic and Latino. There is still a lot of people who think they mean the same thing but one has to do with the Spanish language and Spaniard ancestry (Hispanic) and the other is geographic location (Latin America- latino).

@@damndanim I’m Guyanese but even though we’re South American we don’t really classify ourselves as Latin American. A big part of it is us speaking English (or Dutch for Suris, French in French Guiana) and identify more with West Indian/Caribbean culture than Latin American culture.

And another problem is that this stereotype becomes internalized by latinas, usually on social media. Lelo pons literally grew on popularity because of perpetuating this "toxica" stereotype and then other latina influencers followed.

And Lele doesn't even speak Spanish correctly all the way. She has done interviews in Spanish and she sounded worse than a one year old. Lele was never funny and all she did was stereotype Latinas. We don't claim her in the Latin community.

This is one of the reasons I can’t work with men. The sexual harassment was terrible.

Yes please! Just in general, Slavic women too - either shown as servants (e.g. Dorota in Gossip Girl (...just so many stereotypes in that character alone)), armcandy airheads (e.g. flatmates/models in New Girl), oversexualized criminals (e.g. Katinka in Zoolander), brutally/aggressively sexual (Xenia in GoldenEye, and that Polish girl in E1S1 Skins). Some of those are almost parodic examples, but that's where the stereotypes can be seen in extreme. Not a good look tbh.

Thanks for sharing that! I'm half Colombian, and my last name is Welsh so I don't think that it's always immediately apparent that I'm half Hispanic/Colombian. I'm pretty sure my last ex-boyfriend fetishized me, and it was a really awful experience. Of course there was no way of hiding my ethnicity, because a boyfriend has to sooner, or later meet the parents. I think what really creeped me out was the fact that most of his exes were half Latina, and half Anglo-American. The worst part of the whole experience of was the fact that he turned out to be a narcissistic abuser.

People also forget that there are blonde, blue-eyes Latinas and Black Latinas. Latino is not a race. Being Brazilian, I laugh everytime an American says something like "White people can't dance" or "You don't talk like you're Black". Like, really? Maybe White AMERICANS can't dance and maybe I don't speak like a Black AMERICAN lol. Even the minorities are exceptionalist in America.

This is part of why I loved Roma. All of the Latina women that are casted are usually fair skinned, curvy, etc. My skin ranges during the year but I’m obviously not white. My features are more indigenous and I don’t consider myself to be really all that curvy. Yalitza was the first time that I saw someone who was closer to me and she wasn’t sexualized in Roma. She was who she was, vulnerable, strong, beautiful in her own way, things I wish I saw more of.

It's so interesting for me how in most portrayals of latin women they are shown as very sexual beings, while in our countries, mostly Catholic and very conservative it is almost the contrary, in wich sexuality is taboo, and a lot of families ar really really traditional, basically almost the opposite of the portraits. For us (talking from stereotypes ) people in united states are more open, because our main reference are spring breakers.

Something curious I noticed about the Latina trope when I was little: only the lighter skinned ones are used for the stereotype. Not the darker-skinned ones or those with African descent. Edit: I'm Latin American and lived in Latin America for some time which is why I'm quite aware of this.

Mixed race people often complain about not belonging to either race, but they normally pick a side (generally black). But it seems that afro Latinas have it worse, as they're not acknowledged by white Latinx and suffer from the same colorism as dark skinned AA women.

As a latina, I never thought to much about this. I started noticing it when this guy I just started seeing called me "latina" when we were having sex and I straight up told him not to say that cause it made me uncomfortable. Ever since then I've tried to pinpoint why it made me uncomfortable and I never really understood why until y'all put it into words. Thank you for showing me this perspective, I really appreciate it

@@FifthAveAtFive Romani people are not Latins. They are originally from South Asia, from Rajasthan, India. The word Romani doesn’t come from Rome/Romans but from the Sanskrit word “doma”. Carmen is from Spain of course but ethnically she is a Romani woman therefore not Latin. Romani people in Spain have definitely influenced a lot Spanish culture; they for example invented flamenco.

So the book it's based on is written by an indigenous Canadian author and it looks like the show was created by an indigenous Canadian as well so I would say that if anyone were to know, it would be them. That would be their story to tell so to say it's filled with stereotypes or not would be disingenuous

Well everything depends on where you live. In Europe people who speak a language with a Latin origin are latinos/Latinas. (Spaniards(+ every other country that speaks Spanish)Italians, French(+ every country that speaks French,Portuguese (+ Brazil), Romanians, etc ) In North and South America we refer to people from Latin America as Latino/Latina. Sometimes Brazilians are excluded and there are people who think French speaking countries like Haiti should be included.

true but it's different when you show a series with very different characters inside of it (all latin), than showing a tv show with all white characters and just one volatile latin. it not only gives the latin stereotype more focus, but it also forces her to play a singular role when multiple latins are playing different roles in a telenovela.

That's not fair at all. I'm not defending telenovelas, they're bad on other levels, but to say that telenovelas cultivate the spicy latina role is wrong. That's like saying that tv in India cultivates bollywood tropes in the US. Obviously telenovelas have outgoing and emotional characters, why wouldn't they? It's not a stereotype because these characters aren't there for the pleasure of white people to see them as "exotic", they are there to further the plot and are written as people and not caricatures.

The worst part of this is that this translates to the work place. When you have an opinion, you have an attitude. They use a stereotype to shut you up or worse to define your personality.

Even americans with latin american parents love to perpetuate this stereotype even though they have never experienced what it's like to grow up in a latin country, it's all about compensating for their lack of culture with the "latina 😍🔥💃" personality

That’s the most frustrating part for us actual Latin Americans that grew up in a LatAm country. I’ve definitely seen gringos with Latin American ancestors embracing all these stereotypes thinking that it’s cool to be seen this way. The stereotypical “cRaZy & LouD sPicY LatinA” attitude doesn’t make you cute or unique or cultured, in fact, if I’m being 100% brutally honest, it actually makes you annoying to be around and it makes you look trashy, at least that’s how people would see you if you act that way where I live (a LatAm country, not the US).

It genuinely seems like the 'manic pixie dream girl' of the latinx community.

My genes are asian but I was born and raised in Argentina and I feel more latina than asian to be honest. I dated many asian men and they all said that I'm not like the normal japanese woman. I speak loud and clear, I don't care what people think about me . Lol 😂 they also told me I eat like a man hahaha. They were right. But at the same time, I'm asian in so many ways... I think women are all delightful, interesting, messy, yet powerful no matter if you are introvert or extrovert. But without generalizing too much, I do think many (not everyone) Latina's express their thoughts more openly than asian culture etc. The importante thing here is not what we think but rather how we women and men react to stereotypes. That's the main point I guess. Great video as always ❤️

Throughout my teenage years, specifically 13-16, I identified with the Latina stereotype. My entire personality and decisions revolved around the "Exotic and promiscuous Latina with an attitude" trope. I didn't realize how it was affecting my life and the way I viewed my culture. I was basically living in a simulacrum of fantasy and fetish. I'm so glad I stumbled upon this video because, truthfully, stereotypes depicted in mass media harm and replace people with bad copies and misinterpretations of ethnicity

Thank you for this video! The “spicy Latina” trope has gotten me into scary situations just because of my Hispanic heritage

I will say, in regards to Latinas being susceptible to poor body image, a good deal of that pressure comes from Latin culture in general. My family will constantly talk about weight, and have very sneaky ways of covertly calling you fat. It’s weird too because it usually coincides with a strong emphasis being put on food and eating. It’s... a complicated dynamic.

The reasoning behind that I don’t understand. When I would ask her why she gave more food to my little brother than me, she said that fat women don’t get husbands and don’t have success (?) but fat men are ok (?)

It took me so long to realize how much I internalized the stereotype. How much it affected me in my relationships. Thank you for this. It's such a process to let this ingrained message go.

As a latina, and an exchange student, it amazed me how most people from Europe and Asia thought I would have to be super extroverted and a flirt, or very loud and angry. When I’m the opposite of those :( I felt as if there was something wrong with me.

This always makes me roll my eyes. This archetype is always in the "not a girl, not yet a woman" age range: young enough to be believably earnest and "worthy" of help but old enough for the male protagonist's implicit romantic attraction to her to not be creepy. She's usually sympathetic and mature/bright for her age (hence her emotional connection with the protagonist) with wide round eyes so that white people can feel comfortable watching her. I can't even think of any examples off the top of my head; I just know I've seen them too often. Hell, I've been that girl on occasion. TL;DR I feel you.

Yes as Latina. I’m sick of this. My personality is very much passionate, mischievous, hot tempered, etc. But I’m tired of those traits being the default for all Latina women. It’s fetishization of our race as some sexual objects. Men too. It’s sick and we’re past this.

Imagine trying to explain a gringo that in my school (in Brazil), for example, had ginger people.

Latin women are not to be sexualized, women in general not to be sexualized or objectified. Hollywood will never understand that.
