The High Rise of Central High

Central High School in Springfield, Missouri was once the worst in the city. Now it's one of the best schools in the nation. Administrators wanted to close it, sell the building or tear it down. Enrollment was down because of newer high schools on the edges of the city. Problems were up. Students' grades suffered. Discipline was difficult. The building was falling apart. But alumni, teachers and students came up with an idea to save the school, and make it desirable once again. Their plan included offering the International Baccalaureate Program, a proven, respected college prep program offered in no other school in the area. And they built a new addition on the back of the old building. Now after years of neglect and problems, Central High is one of the best in the nation, according to national surveys and ratings, and student from all over the region clamor to get in.
