"Here Comes That Weird Chill" is one of my favorite Lanegan albums. In his collected lyrics book "I Am The Wolf," Lanegan writes a handful of pages as a preface to the lyrics of his solo albums: "Song favorites include 'Skeletal History,' where I tried to channel the free-form vocalizations of SST band Saccharine Trust to chart the skewed evolution of my own damaged species, 'When Your Number Isn't Up,' and 'Strange Religion," a love song I wrote in a Tokyo hotel room." He also tells a brief yet beautiful, heartbreaking anecdote about how he came to get the female vocals on "Bombed," from "Bubblegum," which I love and you love and a couple other folks love because it's fantastic. You absolutely deserve my like and Subscribe, and you've got it, as well as my interest and respect. Really well done.

Especially in the US, it's crazy to me how few people know about Lanegan's HUGE body of work across most every genre... If you can't find something in his catalogue you like, you don't like music!

  • @doodlereview

Lanegan was always severely underrated, but started to get his flowers from the mainstream toward the end I think. I do have a theory about why he wasn’t bigger in the 2000’s off the back of Queens if you’ll indulge me though: 1) I think that while SftD/No One Knows bought a huge amount of awareness to Queens I’m not sure it actually grew the HARDCORE fanbase at the same rate - I remember seeing them in very small rooms as late as the EV tour. 2) it’s often spoken about comedically but Lanegan was intimidating af, and still way into drugs as far as 2006 - I don’t think you can discount that as a factor in not being given opportunities to work with great tour managers / bookers / just being given opportunities in general. If you have a rep as either unreliable or that you might beat the hell out of someone it’s gonna make people think twice 😂 I feel like in his last 10 years he changed massively in his demeanour and approachability which is when things started getting bigger. Either way I agree with you Lanegan should have gotten more love!

Yeah he was difficult. When I first saw a Lanegan solo show (just after Weird Chill release) he was late because he was somewhere in a Glasgow slum trying to score something. He was super approachable in recent years though. He started remembering who I was which was a bit weird. Last time I saw him he was in a bit more of a pissy mood, but I'm pretty sure it was the shit scottish weather that was irking him that day.

As a Belgian, I'm slightly offended that you didn't include Aldo Struyf in the feature list for Bubblegum. He was Lanegan's closest and most frequent studio and live collaborator from that album until Lanegan's death. There's actually a case to be made for a video about the connection between Belgium and that whole scene. Listed per Belgian band: - Millionaire: Homme frequently praised the band, played live with them a couple of times, produced their second album (later finished by Alain Johannes), and their frontman Tim Vanhamel did some singing and guitars on Eagles Of Death Metal's first album. Check "I'm On A High" and "Champagne". - Creature With The Atom Brain: frontman Aldo Struyf worked with Lanegan for years and Lanegan sang on some of their songs. Lanegan also lived in Antwerp for a while during this period, and his live touring band was all Belgian for quite a while. Check "Crawl Like A Dog" and "Lonely Light". - Soulwax: first album produced by Chris Goss. Check "Kill Your Darlings" and "Acapulco Gold". - Hulk: second album recorded at Rancho De La Luna and produced by Dave Catching, with guest appearances from Chris Goss, Jesse Hughes and Brant Bjork. Check "Seducer" and "My Nation". - Extra: Bruno Favery, the only non-original member on the "Kyuss Lives" tours, is Belgian. - Extra: Qotsa's song "quick and to the pointless" has several bits in Dutch, which, contrary to popular belief, is Belgium's most spoken mother tongue. And while you're at it, also check these (no relation to the QOTSA scene, but definitely in the same vein) - Triggerfinger: check "Drivin'" and "Camaro" - Wallace Vanborn: check "Lion's Manual" and "Marching Sideways" - The Rones: check "Conscience: Mute" and "Like A Wolf" - Mauro pawlowski & The Grooms: check "Make It Complicated" and "Trip To Beg" - The Germans: check "The Next Superstar"

Dude this is EPIC - I humbly apologise for not providing more credit where it's due! I knew Lanegan worked with a lot of Belgian musicians in later years, especially his touring band, but didn't know how deep the connection went. It sounds like you've got enough knowledge for your own video - I'd certainly watch it! I will check out these recommendations, feel like my musical library is about to expand hugely! 🤘

One of those UNKLE songs got used as the instrumental for a Lupe fiasco song called Hello Goodbye (Uncool) with “Uncool” being a play on UNKLE and the fact that the song is on the (classic) album The Cool. @@doodlereview I think the amount of publicity it received varied widely, depending on where in the world you are.. in Canada, it got almost no press at all, and I actually found out about it after the fact, while doing my own dive into Iggy's catalog.. if I hadn't have been lucky to be looking, I'd never have had any idea it existed, or even that Iggy had done anything since the Stooges reunion at all hahaha.. I guess the press here is too busy jamming Canadian bands down our throats, whether they're good or bad, to have time to announce that 2 legends secretly made an album together, and just dropped it out of nowhere when it was done lol

There was definitely an energy, vibe and sound to the band in the first 5 - 6 years that is all its own. My thought is that even if Josh/Nick hadn’t ended in the chaotic fashion it did, it would have run its course eventually. Would still love to see them reunite on a project in the future though
