The princess has such a powerful voice...full of fury and weight... excellent performance from the actress

Yes, I was gonna ask whether this was a fairy tale, because I certainly thought so. Much symbolism used. The inner gold, the fire, the rebirth. What an amazing movie. Happy to have discovered this gem and great commentary. Thank you.

The ending is absolutely mind blowing... when you think this story is about the princess and her kingdom and it's all about those two and their journey... and the transformation of both of them when they are recognized by their efforts, it's trully heartbreaking. This movie made me love Akira's movies, just perfect.

I hope more people are able to experience these commentaries. All of the criterion commentaries for Akira Kurosawa's movies are good, but especially the two for Seven Samurai and the one for Throne of Blood. Those are particularly excellent.

Brilliant analysis. My favorite movie. I'd say Tadakoro is observably impressed in prison already by Yuki, as you can see him look away in shame and reflection when she's singing.
