The Hidden Crisis: Christmas Island 2022

Our team of eight Sea Shepherd Australia Marine Debris volunteers returned to Christmas Island this year and were confronted by a hidden crisis.
Christmas Island is a special place where the famous yearly migration of red crabs takes place - the biggest migration in the animal kingdom. It is also home to endemic species found nowhere else on earth.
Unfortunately, like so many remote places, the density of marine plastic pollution washing up on the small coves of island is escalating every year.
However, our crew never dreamt that they would be shovelling plastic to deal with the accumulation of plastic polluting Greta Beach.
Find out how our crew removed over 2.9 tonnes of trash from just one small 80m beach in our latest video!

The solution is simple, tax plastic to the point that alternatives like glass, paper and metal become cheaper than plastic. Unfortunately, the oil industry does not like this idea, so they keep lobbying against it and tell people to "recycle" instead.

There are few true warrior organizations, and of them all the Sea Shepherd is high above shining their guiding light. It’s very refreshing to hear the responsibility for this placed where it belongs - at the feet of the manufacturers who manically produce and promote this grotesque excess, all in the name of profit. I’m more than tired of the blame being placed on every day people for everything. Individually, we can change habits and not be a part of it. But we can’t stop it. Not enough individuals will make the changes to make a significant difference. He’s right, it has to stop at the source.

We do need to stop single use plastics and there has been a dramatic reduction in Australia and you guy's are doing a great job as do the locals who have clean up days. The problem is Asia as many poor countries don't have world class rubbish collections so people can't properly dispose of their rubbish so it ends up in the streets then the rivers and finally in the Ocean. What is needed is Western rich countries to spend money at the source by providing education and to establish proper rubbish collection in those areas, it won't be cheap but would make a huge difference. Maybe spending a few billion dollars instead of putting people on Mars? The ropes and nets are a different problem because of fishing, but we do have to feed people.

Unfortunately it’s battling a symptom in stead of the root cause, (like CO2 ‘The problem of consumerism’ : kzread.info/dash/bejne/qmSXzdioYr2bcrg.html ). Most likely the majority of the plastic soup sources from poor countries/regions where people more or less have to live on/with the garbage. They would have loved to be able to shop once a week their needs in proper shopping walls, being able to drop their plastic waste after usage in dedicated bins.. in fact it’s not the plastic industry, imagine we would have to replace all plastic packaging with eg bamboo/paper, we would have no trees nor bamboo left. Plastic is recyclable, as long as we make sure we facilitate the collection after use properly.

@@Sea.Shepherd Yeah I just checked out the link…..What the Sea shepherd’s new interpretation of direct action is, according to their own website is following illegal whalers and fishing vessels around and photographing their activities to livestream and give to media outlets. What you call rumours seem to be the absolute truth and it also seems Sea Shepherd have basically become a new branch of Greenpeace….Paul must be gutted to see what the organisation has been changed into.
