The Hero's Journey - Experiencing Death and Rebirth

In his best-known work The Hero with a Thousand Faces published in 1949, Joseph Campbell describes the archetypal Hero’s Journey or “monomyth” shared by the world.
The Hero’s Journey occurs in three sequential phases: separation, initiation and the return. In the climax of the myth, the Hero experiences a psychological death and rebirth. The death of an old aspect of one’s self and the birth of a new and more capable self, receiving insights and experience.

I'm constantly reminded of the 12 Stages and where I currently am and heading towards. I'm happy to be alive, I have the privilege to be able to make videos that can help other people deal with the difficulties of life. There are many positive comments, even from some facing death and disease. I'm getting emotional. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Update: 2 Jan 2024. The dragon has been defeated. Took 2 years and 2 months (10 Nov 2021). Definitely one of the hardest and darkest periods of my life. I'm happy to see the light again. A new journey begins.

12 Stages of the Hero's Journey 1. Ordinary World. One's comfort zone. A growing awareness that something is not quite right, life is somehow lacking. *Phase I: Separation* 2. Call to Adventure. Disrupting the comfort of the Ordinary World and presenting the Hero with a quest to undertake. 3. Refusal. Communicates the risks involved in the journey ahead. Remaining here leads to a deterioration in one's life. 4. Meeting the Mentor. Assists the Hero to overcome his initial fears, can be physical or mental figures (philosopher, family, etc.) *Phase II: Initiation* 5. Crossing the First Threshold. The Hero leaves the Ordinary World and enters the Special World where he faces his dragon (worst fear, event, person...). 6. Tests, Allies and Enemies. As the Hero is likely to fail with his first encounter with the dragon, he must seek Allies and ask for help (vulnerability being a sign of resiliency). 7. Approach to the Innermost Cave. Making the final preparations before descending into the unknown. 8. The Supreme Ordeal. The greatest challenge yet and where the Hero experiences death and rebirth (death of old self and birth of new self). 9. Reward. He receives insights as his reward for his new self. But the journey is not over yet. *Phase III: The Return* 10. The Road Back. The Hero must hold his reward and make his way back to the Ordinary World, leaving the Special World. 11. The Resurrection. The Hero experiences a second death and rebirth, purifying himself from the land of the dead and can now return home. 12. Return with the Elixir. After purifying himself, he receives the Elixir. It is something for the Hero to share with others, or something with the power to heal: wisdom, love or simply the experience of surviving the Special World. The Hero comes back to his Ordinary World with a new self, having faced terrible dangers and possibly death, but now looks forward to the start of a new life.

I feel that there is a 13th step, that involves the Hero attempting to settle into the Ordinary World, but never quite integrating properly again after returning from the Special World, due to their experiences and achieved wisdom. One may try to revisit old hobbies or acquaintances, but after such elucidation the trivialities and hypocrisies become so apparent that it's almost painful to continue, a detriment to the journey one has endured, and so they must leave those things behind. Schopenhauer describes this sentiment by the face it causes upon the individual; a slightly stern and weary eye, difficulty in finding things that bring a genuine smile, the tell-tale furrowed brow that confers disappointment that so few choose to undertake their personal journey. It's an important and final step that one comes to, as the realization that they no longer need 'this' anymore, and are ready to return to the Special World when the time comes for good. The Lord of the Rings series touches upon this, Bilbo attempts to reintegrate but finds that he cannot and thus becomes reclusive and private as he makes a vain attempt to have one foot in his comfort zone, and one beyond in the vast worlds he has come to perceive. Frodo doesn't even try to reintegrate, he properly understands there is no going back anymore and chooses to leave it all behind for grander pastures. For many of us, it has all become a test of patience as we eagerly await the final toll of the bell which marks the next step.

I went through exactly this journey with the horrifying experience of heartbreak. It helped me to become familiar with the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, which seems like a hero's journey to me. I faced unimaginable grief, and had to look everywhere to heal and understand what I was going through. Ultimately it was Jesus who could really give me the answers I needed, and he is the ultimate example of resurrection of course. It's beautiful when you come to realize that all this unimaginable pain that you may go through will ultimately lead you to a higher place, if you ask the right questions and seek the right answers. Of course, it's an awful lot of work, but that's what makes you the hero. And then you see those same people who caused you pain, with their stupid little certainties... They never dared to go beyond, they never had to.

Finally coming to the return. I've spent almost seven years taking the hero's journey literally. Walked the world, fought the darkness, aided the weak. Now I have finished all my ordeals and gotten my reward. I can return from the land of the dead at last.

Oh, how difficult it is to follow that inner guidance, especially because all of the outside society constantly reminding me that I am doing everything wrong, that my choices are crazy. But I could never go back to the life I lived before, it would be the death of me. And again, every video I watch is amazing!

Dude your videos are so freakin good it’s not even funny. Been a minute since I’ve found a channel like yours. Nice to listen to, very deep but not explained in a pretentious way. This might sound crazy, I know there’s an algorithm. But I feel like I’m being guided right now to become what I am truly meant to become. Even videos who’s titles don’t talk about his concept or the concept of overcoming fear keep coming to me and many many other synchronicities have been at play in my daily life.

Well, I can certainly say I'm being dragged along reluctantly, doing barely enough to survive, rather than be more proactive about my own life. I wonder if it's within me to improve this state or this is just how I am. This is my personality make-up. I'm not sad at all, don't get me wrong, but I would certainly rather have more disposable income, but that comes at a cost of precious time which as of yet I haven't been willing to sacrifice. Not that I do much useful with that free time. Wow this video is resonating hugely..! I worked a job with diminishing returns, as you say (circa 5 mins) and decided to quit and go travelling. A call to adventure. I then came home, five years later, and am now back in the rut of not enjoying my work and feeling incredibly unfulfilled. Perhaps time for another adventure...

The hero’s journey is essentially our maturity into the subjective experience we’re immortal spirits that don’t die and the discovery of our true self as the feeling state of our bodies is what we desire to cultivate more than anything else in the world. The embodiment of truth and living from a faith defined as our bodily response to life…the true life of our soul emerging from within us…this is the Heroes journey.
