The Hercules 502 GS: How Rotary Engine Works on a Dirt Bike

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Hercules Wankel 502 GS was the first dirtbike motorcycle to use a Wankel engine in production. To lubricate the engine, the original models used a two-stroke mix in the fuel, which was eventually improved to an oil injector. Between 1974 and 1976, approximately 1800 were sold under both Hercules and DKW badges. Hercules produced a few off-road Wankel-powered motocross models for the United States. A few of them have appeared in the United States, although they are extremely rare. The crankshaft was virtually vertically positioned, apparently to provide a shorter wheelbase and improved cooling, and while the engine appears to be a standard two-stroke, a closer inspection reveals that it actually a Wankel.

@@ipo7596 they both lubricate th3 cylinders with oil burnt alongside fuel yes, overlapping valve timing is way more common on a 2t then a Rotary tho. The reciprocating mass chamhes directions on a 2t, it doesn't on a Rotary, this makes for a way smoother and faster revving engine when compared at similar CC's however yes one could say the 2 engines are very similar, I'm way more familiar with 4t bikes and Rotaries tho my 2 stroke bike experience is shamefully limited.....

Rotary motors have their issues and aren't for everyone. In fact they aren't for hardly anyone. The emissions are one thing but wiper longevity and harder than 2 stroke rebuilds are the deal killer really. Is it horizontally placed, as opposed to longitudinally yea, so the crank is 90 degrees to the direction of the frame? (I'm actually a Rotary engine builder, not on this platform and haven't watched the video yet), cos if it is, and it's rotating forwards it would actually help stabilise in the same way a reciprocating F4 would just less due to the reduced internal enertia of the dorito, now if its sideways (crank forwards, rotating sideways) then were gonna feel it but I've a feeling it's not, gonna watch now.....

I'd be curious about the low end. How much torque off the line, hill pulling power and get you out of a bad situation acceleration. I have several early 80s bigger KTMs, a 250 and two 420s, that you can plant corn in the ditch they leave in their wake. The 420s accelerate just as fast going straight up as they do on the level, I'd love to have tried one of these Hercules bikes back in my day. ✌️

Thing is they don't ride at low revs, O constantly have this debate with non Rotary guys, its power band is higher so we use it higher, torque is comparable to a normal bike due to thebreduced inertia from the rotating mass, it will ride great and very normal, infact it might kick the tyres quicker as it will actually hit its torque band quicker and fly through it faster then a typical power band, that's why this dude keeps loosing the back when pulling away.......

Yea that surprised me too but the inertia of the doritos is lower then the inertia of velocity and the spinning wheels so I doubt it's very noticeable however I'm sure it'll be measurable and in a jump I bet it would turn if revs were kept up, so many people talking nonsense here finally an intelligent statement...👍👌👍
