DIRTBIKE WITH ROTARY ENGINE (Hercules Wankel 502 GS)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Hercules Wankel 502 GS was the first production dirtbike motorcycle using a Wankel motor. The first models used a two-stroke mix in the gasoline to lubricate the engine, which was later upgraded to an oil injector. About 1800 were sold under both Hercules and DKW badges between 1974 to 1976. In 1977 they sold all their production tooling to Norton. The exhaust port is on the right-hand one-third of the rotor chamber. The pipe goes up and over and exits on the left side of the bike.
Hercules built a few off-road Wankel-engined motocross models, for the ISDT and for their US importer Penton Motors. A few of these showed up in the USA, but they are very rare. The crankshaft was mounted nearly vertical, presumably to give a shorter wheelbase and better cooling, and while the engine might look like a traditional two-stroke, a close look reveals that it is a Wankel.

Hi everybody, I'm the lucky owner of the blue 502 GS who is wearing the grey polo while riding the bike. I would like to thank very much Dirt N Iron for this great video. I'd like to tell you the difference between the W2000 bikes sold from 1975 to the general They were equipped with the type KC27 Wankel engine. Eleven engines were made and there are only 5/6 left of which only 2 are still in use. The second 502 was in the hands of Herbert Scheck. The crankcase is a Sachs Seven with the MX 5/6 speed gearbox (basically the 1st gear was My bike, 297cc, has 39 hp at the wheel and a torque of 3.3 Nm which is almost constant, almost like an electric engine. Max power of the KC31 engine is sliglt less than 40 CV at 12.000 RPM. Torque is almos flat at 33 Nm / 3,3 kgm. No problem with longevity as the inner surfaces are finised in Nikasil (it was 1976, always remeber this) and off road with this engina you never go full power, is impossible. You normally use 1/3 of the power, and is is more than enough.

I would imagine the engine didn't have the low end torque to complete with the piston engines. Also, how was the mileage?

Are you kidding? Find me a 300cc two strokes with 3.3 kgm at 7.200 rpm... The main problems in the races was the rules make the 297cc Wankel running against the over 500cc engines...

@FichDich InDemArsch The Wankels has never been disqualified. It has been penalised by the fact that international regulations double its displacement. Today, in historic rallies in the UK, the true displacement is multiplied by 1.5. This is much more correct. The 502 would be competing against 450cc bikes, from 1976, of course. But testing the bike makes many things clear.

@FichDich InDemArsch When Rotary was introduced by NSU, all, I mean ALL, car manufacturers bought the rights to make it. For example Mercedes-Benz in 1969/70 built the C111 with the Wankel engine. The 1970 engine was a 4 rotors, displacement of 2400 cm³ which gave 350 hp at 7000 rpm and a speed of 290 km/h. Not bad for 1970... Only Mazda developed it properly for everyday use starting from the 1963 Cosmo to the RX-8. Problems? Yes, of course. As any other kind of engines has its own. High temperatures and high fuel consumption. Last but not least: in 1991 the rotary Mazda 787B won Le Mans 24 hours, following all the FIA rules.

Wow it sounds like a two stroke and a four stroke at the same time. That’s insane but brilliant There’s always been a lot of controversy in racing with rotary engines. If a 1000cc only fires on one cylinder at once, you don’t class it has a 250cc. But some how Wankel engines get a way with it. Cheating Germans. Only joking. The engines are only classed has a third of there full cc. They achieved fantastic power when Brian Crichton fitted the Norton rotary with the exhaust Venturi ( good name) it was time to race the TT. I was there.

Sounds like a 3stroke Rotary engines just aren’t given the credit, and subsequent research, they deserved. GM wanted to used a two rotor in a mid engine version of the corvette in the late 60’s Only took 50 years to get ONE of those two ideas in production.

Oil injectors will fail, sometime, someday. Experienced Mazda Rotary users add 1% oil directly into gasoline. You could add also 1 cc of MoS2 (LiquiMoly) per mix litre, Molybden additive was part of lubricant in Le Mans endurance race winner Mazda car. Blessings +

Didn't Hercules also build a conventional style 2 stroke called a "Twingle", that was 2 pistons firing as 1.

I don’t understand why the dirt bike rotary theme wasn’t developed more , insanely simple design, so much power from something so small and great torque, good longevity, possibly better than two stroke, tough simple cheap to produce, l don’t get it.
