my favorite part of the dunk/aerion fight is that it mirrors the clegane/oberyn fight almost exactly (the fire figure demands admittance of guilt, takes so long pontificating that the giant figure basically trips the fire figure and then bashes in the fire figure's head, to the point where dunk even thinks about doing a clegane!) except...we're rooting for the opposite figure each time. It really muddies the last night symbolism in fascinating ways.

I can confirm @GreyWasteTim Orange juice guy on acid tale. I am from the same area as him. That legend has been around our area for generations. Its always said the same way too. "A man that tripped on acid too hard, permanently walks around carefully, because he thinks he is a glass of orange juice, and does not want to tip over"

Thank you for going all the way through The Hedge Knight! The first time I read this story, my heart literally stopped when I realized Baelor was dead. I cried a little, had to put the book down and take a break. The entire Trial of Seven had a surreal, eerie feel to it to me, and I think it's because it reads like a fairytale where Dunk is being guided by an invisible/unknowable force beyond his ken. I love the strangely eerie atmosphere to all three stories in the middle of this sweet tale about Dunk and Egg.

Yeah, even though these appear like small, insignificant stories in the grand scheme of things, they are dripping with deep, rich symbolism, which was George's intention to begin with. He wanted these to have an everyday, sort of common feel to them in order to test his readers to see if they're paying attention. As well as get people to see that underneath and behind all every day sort of small occurences there looms things which are way heavier implications according to the grand scheme.

A great stream I was able to lay in bed an listen an enjoy the reading as I've not read the book's an didn't know much about Dunk an Egg so these have been a great learning experience for me thank you both David an Grey Waist Tim

I think Steely Pate is an embodiment of The Smith, from of the Faith of the Seven. He is also blessed by incarnations of the other gods. When I looked at the book cover of the collected stories about Dunk, as it is on this video, the screen was cut, and I could read "A Knight of the Seven". So there you have it. And maybe, just as they say in the text, Dunk's team represent the seven as well. Maybe we can figure out together who is who?

I think Baelor Breakspear is The Stranger. He is the last, he is in black, they don't know who he is at first. Raymunn Fosseway could be the maiden. Because he is young, an appel that is not ripe and he is a knight just maid. Dunk could represent The Smith, because he is Steely Pate's champion and he is a commoner himself, and a champion of the common people.

This has become the highlight of my week. Reading right alongside you two!

Have absolutely loved and enjoyed these streams with both of yall. Your duo is excellent and would love to go through the other books with Tim.

My wife and I were saying today - I forgot if it's this stream that you talk about Baratheon and Stark and the other houses being archetypal models for the characters within them - that the Starks are traditionalists weighed down by duty. But the Targaryens often think 'today is the first day of the rest of my life'. They are innovators, visionaries, with a sense of purpose that is universal - rather than more local like the Starks. Targs have a sense of destiny and not being chained to the limits of what has been.

Finally able to finish the whole stream. It maybe my all time favorite so far. Please do all the books ❤

An egg-celent stream!

Such great streams! Loved you including Tim on these, he was a great addition! I love the Trial of the Seven portion of the story, such a great combat scene, fucking visceral!

For the trial by combat, at first it seems like each side has only six combatants. That makes sense because the combatants are supposed to represent the Seven gods, and the seventh god is the Stranger. He is death, he is no one. I think you got stuck trying to figure out which side was humanity and which side was the Others, but what I see more here is the Dance of the Dragons / Blackfyre Rebellion / Dany vs Faegon pattern, where the realm is split fighting itself, dragons on both sides, apples on both sides. So then after some Fossaway drama, we have Dunk confronting a huge crowd who remain totally silent, now with 12 fighting men behind him, many of which (probably all) have death and resurrection symbolism associated with them. So there’s another example of Dunk playing the Last Hero 😊

Did Egg plan to sacrifice his family? Unfortunately, I think yes. Shit just got out of hand. Obviously he was attempting to limit the bounds of the magic with the "sand trap." Egg isn't an apple, but an onion, he had layers and yes some of them may have been rotten, but not all.

Been rewatching these Dunk and Egg rereads while painting my basement (along with your most recent New Years Eve 2023/24 stream) and love it so much! The symbolism lessons is so rich and I love all of your voices for the characters. Special nod to Tim’s Aerion voice, so perfect for a smug little elitist asshole 👌. I’m so excited for the HotD season 2 post game episodes!! Love you guys!

Tanselle = NN (a tall COtF). Kinda reminds me of the lengii. The battle is ultimately over her slaying a puppet dragon in the play. Dunk (LH) protects the “small folk”. Aerion (AA/NK) abuses them. We see this all over the main story (eg Jaime) some others feel responsible for protecting the small folk whereas others like the KG are loyal to the royalty. So if the royalty doesn’t protect the small folk then KG others are bad. The split is over duty and honor. Duty to the king vs commitment to the vows (protect the small folk/children).

When Dunc is getting up after taking the last of the blows all he see's is the grey sky... same again the bleak grey sky is seen just before bealor dies. The fall out of moon meteor armageddon..... also a reference to the grey side of the weirwoodnet. Also im pretty sure Dunc takes three blows before falling, the one that pierces him, the one that smashes his sword out his arm and the third the morning star to the head. 3 heads of the dragon, 3 meteors. loved this read through... thanks again.

I noticed a few times, cat of the canals being one and the bridge of dreams chapter where the use of grey either as a contrast to green or as instance where the tone of the scene is about to change. Dunc looks up to grey sky just before he turns the tables on the azor ahai dragon targ Prince and again as baelor dies. it's very cool

What about the rime, "Oak and iron guard me well, or else I'm dead and doomed to hell"? Is it a magic spell? Or what does it mean?

In light of the recent revelation of the weirwood with green leaves from the 2024 calendar art... Red Apple Fossaway represents the corrupted weirwood tree, but the Green Apple Fossaway is the uncorrupted weirwood on the side of the living. What this would mean is that all the Red weirwood trees belong to the Others, because they are corrupted. And the Isle of Faces may become the only refuge for our heroes once the Long Night falls.

All of this symbolism continues to reinforce my idea that the others will no doubt be sympathetic characters by the end of things. But a new thought LML is giving me via his commentary up through where I’m at now (ashes in the eye comment) is that dunk (Nissa nissa) seems to be the one tampering with the wyrwood spirits and azor ahai(brightflame) seems to want to punish her for it. Wouldn’t that be a George thing to do? That nissa nissa is actually the “bad guy” but she gets murdered and we’re left wondering did she deserve it and is azor ahai the greater of the two evils for trying to put her down but using murder/blood magic to do it and holy shit I just recapped Jon and Danaerys in season 8 😳

The "dragonfly" is a pretty interesting reference for future reasons (spoilers for Egg's future)... * * * * * * * * * Duncan "the Small" Targaryen was called the "Prince of Dragonflies" after he abdicated his titles, choosing Jenny of Oldstones over the throne . Which as a personal opinion I say good for him -and Jenny- choosing their own happiness, BUT politically a disaster. The choice was indeed an omen of things to come, as it kicked off most of Aegon and Betha's kids abandoning their betrothals, except their daughter -Rhaelle- who would be an ancestress of the Baratheons including Robert. Oddly Duncan's choice might have further emboldened his siblings to marry each other too, re-igniting Targaryen incest for several generations. All leading to the downfall of the Targaryen dynasty. If you consider the red comet an omen as well that just makes for an interesting parallel imo. Is that actually anything? I'm new to noticing such potential symbolism myself. OK back to finishing the video! Really enjoying this little series of videos btw, just excellent stuff all around.
