As a Yankee fan, you not mentioning Mattingly is a crime. Mattingly in his prime was far better than Wright and a bit better that Tulo. He had 4 years in a row and 5 out of 6 were he was one of the best players in baseball. He hit 30 to 35 HR 3 years in a row when hitting 20 was a lot. 6 years in a row of 186 to 238 hits. And one year, he had 145 rbis. And never struck out more than 43 times in a year. Then a bad back sapped him of most of his power the rest of his career, and he had to retire early.

I felt the Mets did Wright a disservice when they built Citi Field. Ownership was so enamored of the Brooklyn Dodgers, they built a stadium that their generational player couldn’t hit the ball out of. Look at the dimensions of that place when it opened. It was like they purposefully wanted another Ebbets Field. That being said, I don’t see him as a HOFer. Hall of Very Good, sure. Mets Wall of Fame, of course.

If one is a good-enough hitter one can usually be moved to first base as speed declines or the risks of injuries overpower one's defensive value. So it was with Ernie Banks, Rod Carew, Johnny Bench, Mike Schmidt, George Brett, Pete Rose, Carl Yastrzemski, and Al Kaline.

Those goddamn spine/back injuries are career-killers. Christian Yelich is still fighting through them. Don Mattingly is another one who was cut down in his prime. Ralph Kiner would be in the 500-HR club if his back held up. David Wright would have finished as the greatest Mets position player of all time and made the HOF if not for the back. He was special. I was just playing the old MLB 07 game for the PSP last month. Who was on the cover? David Wright. Not a predictor for all-time greatness, but it reminds you how big the guy was at one point. Back injury is the worst. It ended Tiger Woods' and Don Mattingly's careers too.

Those late aughts Mets teams were so fun but woefully underperformed. Reyes, Beltrán, Delgado, and Wright were an absolutely stacked top 4. All four of those dudes had serious HOF potential. But the Mets are gonna Mets.

He still had a great career and in his prime lived up to the hype. Try Hunter Bishop; the guy was the Giants # 1 prospect and never saw a pitch in the big leagues due to an injury. Wright had a solid career; as long as we would’ve liked? No, but he was a great for several years

As much as I dislike the Mets as a Braves fan, I always dug Wright even when he would make us look like chumps sometimes. Sad how injuries did him in.

I hated Wright, it’s cause he was so good. You knew he was the leader of the Mets and someone that if any fan is honest, would want on their team. Hate the fact he didn’t get to play it out the way he should’ve.
