The HARSH Truth About IQ | Jordan Peterson

Jordan Peterson describes the harsh truth about IQ that we avoid. He talks about why it is difficult for people to accept IQ. He discusses the importance of IQ, the implication of IQ for learning, the effects of IQ on the economy, job market, and getting hired. He also mentions the consequences of neglecting IQ for the society.

✏️ Jordan Bernt Peterson is a Canadian professor of psychology, clinical psychologist, KZread personality, and author. Born and raised in Alberta, Peterson obtained bachelor's degrees in political science and psychology from the University of Alberta and a PhD in clinical psychology from McGill University. After teaching and research at Harvard University, he returned to Canada in 1998 to permanently join the faculty of psychology at the University of Toronto. In 1999, he published his first book, Maps of Meaning: The Architecture of Belief, which became the basis for many of his subsequent lectures. The book combined information from psychology, mythology, religion, literature, philosophy, and neuroscience to analyze systems of belief and meaning.
He put his clinical practice and teaching duties on hold by 2018, when he published his second book, 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos. This book became a bestseller in several countries. Throughout 2019 and 2020, Peterson's work was obstructed by health problems in the aftermath of a severe benzodiazepine withdrawal syndrome. In 2021, he published his third book, Beyond Order: 12 More Rules for Life, and returned to active podcasting.

This is too generalised & lacking context. I wish others didn't see this quote a lot. Yes, intelligent people have the love of learning. That's what makes them feel this way. The insecure ones compare themselves to people that they think are more intelligent than them. They are also worried about being 'right enough' because of their fear of failure. Some 'stupid people' (in this sense) I've met also have had a lot of doubt in what they knew & were willing to be enlightened. They were the more humble ones. His quote can be misinterpreted as, 'Oh, this Charles something guy said that having healthy confidence is a bad thing. Now, I'm a confident person. Does that mean I'm dumb...?' NO. This quote lacks the context. It's good to have confidence & courage. Being the type of person who is confident in themselves, courageous to make the right decisions & willing to learn is how you'll get lots out of whatever you do.

Iq 147 here (verified by German mensa) My story: child of immigrants, sister and brother never had an iq test but definitely highly intelligent. Brother is a CTO In artificial intelligence and sister speaks 7 languages working for the government Then, there is me: former military, mma practitioner, got prices in school for art projects and studied economics UNTIL a life event happened: sadly I am very emotional and when my girlfriend cheated on me, my world broke down. Gave up my studies, fell in a deep hole and never realy got up because I lost my interest in participating in the world. I'm currently working half time as a call center agent and feel like an absolute loser especially in family gatherings when my brother and sister are there. I feel like the black sheep amongst lions with golden manes. Conclusion: your iq doesn't matter if you are an emotional train wreck

Was forced to take one in middle school to qualify for gifted program in one of the high schools that I was considering. Said program had 3 possible ways of entering. 1. Certain IQ which guarantees you will stay in the program no matter what 2. Middle school grades which get you in, but don’t guarantee you stay, and 3. Exemplary performance in your first year at high school in rather unproductive non advanced classes. While the effect of IQ is clearly real, it can also give one a sense of arrogance and set you up for failure later on in life as one is never forced to work hard since classes remain easy until midway through university. I experienced this myself and received a rather nasty shock in an aerospace class in which I couldn’t just understand the material instantly after reading over the textbook once. Iq can be a double edged sword for sure.

I feel that. I got into gifted classes at a young age and didn't really have to work that hard to memorize or understand most things. I was behind emotionally and socially, though. Eventually my arrogance, laziness, and mental health caught up to me. I got into harder classes for myself, and didn't have the drive to press through. Now, I'm middle aged, work a crap job, and find it difficult to think in depth about many things.

IQ of 139. The IQ test is a great way to measure a person’s ability to utilize rational thought and solve unfamiliar problems quickly. Yet this does not mean than we are intelligent in every facet of life as every human has their unique strengths and weaknesses. IQ tests show us our potential for learning and developing particular styles and forms of intelligences. Yet naturally we will still find ourselves only capable of being advanced in specific areas of intelligence. For example, I have high creative thinking, great long-term factual memory, and can find many patterns and connections between various pieces of information. This makes me great with tech and media projects, video games, writing, and other creative projects. But I can’t work with woodworking or construction stuff without hurting myself no matter how safe I try to be, and I easily give up with calculus, physics, and sheet music since I hate complex symbol systems. Everything else is normal; a few above average, most things average, and some that I’m just terrible at. So yeah. IQ is a great way to determine how capable we are in general with rationality and complex problems, but it doesn’t mean we’re great at everything or don’t need to work hard to develop talents and skills.

Same boat and I agree. EQ is more important. High IQ is neither indicative of success nor is it productive in the presence of mental illness. I was failing classes before medication and genuinely believed I had suddenly become an idiot. I'm much better now but still depressed. What has intelligence done for me aside make me realize there's no point to existing except the little dopamine boosts. None of us will matter in 100-200 years. What's even the point aside from prolonging the existence of the human race. I'll go back to living in a perpetual existential crisis because all I am is a bunch of quarks and that's all I'll ever be

Life is very complicated. Having a high IQ will help you, but that's about it. It won't do any work for you, it won't make you amount to anything, it won't help at all if you don't use it. A high IQ basically means that you can understand something faster than the average person. If a paragraph takes the average person two readings to fully comprehend, it will take you one. In the time it takes the average person to understand one difficult paragraph, you will have understood two. Notice this doesn't mean that you actually achive anything, nor that a less intelligent person can't do the same things you can by simply working harder.

  • @thegoldentree6913

So you are saying that everyone can become anything but with different speed and effort? So a person with 90 IQ can become a great physicist with extra time and effort than a person with an IQ of 150? Yea, no. IQ in addition limits you. It defines your capabilities. This is painful because people with low IQs just have to work very hard to achieve things that an average person takes for granted. It also means that we can't achieve our dreams if they are too big.

  • @georgepantzikis7988

@@thegoldentree6913 That's very obviously not what I said. I said that a high IQ doesn't mean you don't have to work, and that having a lower IQ is not a death sentence. Also, IQ is not something people should consider in their everyday lives, mainly because the limits IQ imposes on people are very specific (and most people aren't interested in areas of life that require high IQs in the first place). Do you want to study physics? A high IQ will undoubtedly help, but most people, with a greater or lesser degree of effort, can do it. Do you want to be a really good physicist, do research on physics, and contribute to the field? Then, yes, you almost certainly need to have a higher than average IQ.

I'm glad to see Jordan addressing this. I think there is an inversion in our programming. Socrates, Plato or one of those guys said, "there are people who can see, people who can see when shown, and people who cannot see." The "self-evident" truth that we are all created equalled is really not a self-evident truth. It's more accurate that our value among our kind and everything, sentient and nonsentient in the world, is equal in sharing with all things the inherent right to exist as we are created. We are all NOT created equally and ergo applying the same guardrails and expectations and so forth on everyone equally is a groteque misinterpretation of this sentiment. Prior to Empire sweeping us into concrete piles of disconnected parts with no purpose and no passions, we organized ourselves into small ()ish collectives with complex social hierarchies in which we existed peacefully for many millenia, in which everyone had a place set for them from cradle to grave and would be employed and occupied based on whatever existing proclivities each individual exhibited. Instead, school is essentially an occupation of the mind. A 'denial of service' attack on the cognitive mind, and an assassination on the creative impulse within. We were never meant to have to compare ourselves to rapidly and constantly shifting social norms. Group of young folks need to band together based on common ground, and raise brood of children in a culturally sterile environment at least until they lose their milk teeth. Those 7 to 8 years of hypnogogic trance is when we unpack the particular facets of ourselves, calibrated for this specific iteration. We are now effectively writing over our new ones by scheduling their time and exposure to media. The thing is, if we left them to be autonomous, having to come up with creative play with worlds they make and imaginary friends that populate those worlds, and if we re-inverted 'children should be seen and not heard' and didn't mock them or prank them or use them as content and otherwise cause them to externalize their locus of control, they would stay plugged into the Forever they just got here from and be able to remember themselves more fully, become themselves more fully, have more direct contact with ancestral wisdom and if we didn't question the validity of what they say, we can have a fine new batch of fresh humans who are not poisoned with Empire's regularly scheduled programming.

I got kicked out of junior year for cheating on test lol. I didn't prefer to do any school work outside of the 8hrs that were allotted to the educators, ish. I always maintained a 100 test average, and in math I actually had an average of 104, od course including the pop up quiz for extra credit. Homework average was like 30 to 100, depending upon the class and topics. So, I was forced by the school to take an extensive IQ test by Dr Cooley who was dean of Baylor. I scored 131 and I was stoned during the test. I think it's a little above average. But I struggle socially and I am obsessive about cleanliness and organizing and patterns. Weird, I know. But it seems to hold me back when I'm capable of doing pretty intricate things. Problem solving is so much fun to me. The bigger the problem, the more I have to immerse myself into an find the fix. We need to be challenged, or we get bored and instantly move on to one of the 100 things we've been thinking about at the same time. It's Kaos in one's own mind.

Hello guys, I am pretty sure there is also a lot of people who don't have high IQ and I want to remind you all. If you have low IQ it does not mean you are dumb. You propably have high EQ instead. EQ is type of intelligence based on mainly social intelligence, understanding yourself and others. People with high IQ actually usually suffer from social things like making loyal friends. And usually if you have one low you propably have the opposite type of intelligence high. Also if there is something unclear or wrong please tell me in replies and I will try to make it clear or correct something. PS: I am really sorry if there is some wrong grammar, as English is not my main language. Wish you all beautiful morning/day/night!

I am the dumb one in my family. I figured that out by age five because mom was practically Will Hunting, and I could practically memorize conversations and got in trouble for repeating everything back with so much detail and accuracy that my babysitter call me A.N.N. Allegra News Network. I still remember taking the kindergarten version of the SAT, and I looked around the room to find out who could figure out the meaning of the abstract pictures and who was stuck. I never cheated. I just wanted to know who the idiot in the room was, and I decided it was me because I didn't know how to solve that kind of problem at that age. I felt like the idiot ever since and stopped working and truly trying in math until college when people told me I was bad at something. So I worked my way through school and college by finding boys and men that didn't know grammar. I helped them write better and understand their mistakes and they helped me solve math faster. Then, when I was trying to get into grad school I failed the GRE math portion and didn't know how stupid I was until I got home to realize that 1% percentile means you failed. Wondered why I was only girl not crying when I got out. Took a statistics course and had the world's greatest professor, and now I like statistics. If I had him at age 15, I probably would have my MAT in teaching by now. The only time in life I tried to cheat was in P.E., but that was stupid. The skinny P.E. teacher figured out why my ability and time didn't match. I was shaving time by running across the field when she was not looking. Then, she ran behind me the whole way with the entire class following just to punish me for being lazy enough to try using geometry to get out of running laps. My boss thinks my IQ score is 80 points and treats me like it. And the rest of campus calls me the idea person and goes to me for quick fixes on the college of medicine side. I am the dumb one on campus because everyone else knows something I don't know, and I constantly learn from the kind people. Our Dean has published so many journals that he needs to retire and just help people in the office, but he gets to teach all the smart kids. No one else on campus is as kind towards me as him, but the are all afraid I will be manic if I write too fast and change the subject or dumb down my grammar to fit in with people. The only thing in life I feel confident in is identifying who are all of the intelligent people and who I need to run away from. I hate being the smartest person in the room. That's boring and I will daydream instead of talking. I am average. Not a single person drafted me to test my IQ. And, if I remember statistics that means I am in the middle of the bell curve if now one thinks I am too dumb or too smart to be anywhere to provide proof. Don't understand why people are obsessed with IQ. I still like Howard Gardner even if people think he is wrong. Who cares if I needed touch math to do basic math problems as a child because I couldn't hold pictures. I was focusing on everything I heard, and what happened? I majored in music. Probably the only logical choice in the end. My name is the feminine version of Allegro and everyone called me it every time I did something too fast. We aren't all the smartest, and I don't see why they care. All I want to know is why I can sit with a doctor or medical person and know who will jack me up and who will not. That is a gift that keeps me alive. Funny thing about intuition. My brother had to miss college when he was sent to Kuwait, and my gift to him was film textbooks to help him learn when he was away from college in the military. My first thought was, I don't want to understand film. I don't care. Who is probably the best at this? Harvard. So, I went on their system to find out who is in what level of film and assigning what book. I am not Liz Murray. I was too lazy to read those books. Then when I found out who was assigning what textbook read reviews of them, and then choose based of fit and price. After that I asked myself, why the hell does Harvard not have security to block me. I don't hack stuff. It was wide open for me to borrow their knowledge and make my little brother smarter, even though I am still mad that he is smarter than me but truly lazy. Hope Harvard has better security now. I think I did that in 2011. All I had to do was use the same steps I used at North Central College to find out what Harvard reads. I read enough Harvard Business Review. I was bored and found out maybe Harvard isn't so smart or they just don't care that I learned a lesson from a cheaper college and saved money to find the same answer. It was awesome, but I was thinking. Are they so proud that they want to give the world the roadmap to what they are learning. Yeah, most cannot understand it. But, why give me the options to find answers for free? Maybe they saved money but underpaying the IT department. Who knows?

Im the “dumb one” too. Maybe in IQ I’m not the smartest but I know that if I better myself now (I’m 15) I won’t have to worry about it later. I’ve been watching Peterson for a year or so and the main thing I’ve been motivated to do is be hard working. And… while I may have the lowest grades in my family, everyone in my chemistry class thinks I’m super smart because I was the only one who didn’t fail this test. Realizing it now it’s really who you surround yourself with. If your near dumb people you will feel smart, if your near smart people you will feel dumb. I guess a balance is key 🤷‍♂️

@@turboterps Thanks for stating that. Wish I could blame it on not taking meds that week, but I honestly know better and haven't written more intelligently in a long time because I got lazy. I think the premise was that people who idealize IQ limit themselves and make their lack of intellect something that is bigger than it should be. I work with people who have PhD's and have no street smarts and sometimes common sense. And, I know people who struggled in school that I considered smarter than I despite the fact that I had more education. If you always see yourself as a learner, it is the best and most comfortable place to be. Sad thing is I was an English and Spanish tutor in college, but after graduation I let it slide to blend in. My peers hated my long and proper emails and text messages with full paragraphs. Now, I wish I hadn't lost it. My grammar was better on a computer. But, now that I mostly use a smartphone I write like all my peers now. Wish I hadn't dropped the Spanish though. I learned Spanish in school first but look full Boriqua everywhere I go. The moment you are the only person on the job site who speaks Spanish, you get twice the work and cannot get your real job done stuck trying to translate. I could speak in Spanish but I couldn't remember what I said in Spanish later if someone had a complaint, so I never spoke a word of it or learned any more since apart from the few times talking with family. Where I am from if I spoke Spanish fluently, I would never lose employment. But, I am tired of explaining to people I was born here and my family isn't from Mexico illegally. Some of the students I had in middle school thought Canada was of the 50 States and that Puerto Rico was a city in Mexico. You would be surprised how many made it through school cheating. Not ready to find where I fit in again, but started taking up Spanish again. I swear I am losing IQ points as I age. I am not as bright as I once was. Guess you lose what you don't use.

Selection of your goals is really important and I don't know how I arrived in this really great place. I just kind of figured it out and it all cliqued after working my behind off to become competent. I didn't take one class in college that went to waste. I use my education every day. I have to speak Spanish to workers every day. Even the foreign language I took in college is used. I have to translate regulations and written plans I create. With Google Translate I can communicate on a very high level with people of any language. Big IQ or low IQ you still have to develop yourself. I slept through most classes and refused to do homework because it never interested me but I always aced every test and had the highest score in every class (except history). My grandma had me reading before I turned one and she n 1st grade they wanted to skip me ahead to 6th grade after testing me. My mother refused and decided to keep me in classes so I would have an average childhood. (I was bullied and harassed due to my autism, ADHD and other social and mental difficulties.) was reading college level books on physics and string theory and such in 7th and 8th grade for fun. went to college where I got degrees in art, graphic design, game design and computer sciences before moving on to trade school and learning copper and fiber optics, green tech, telecommunication, Satalite, and electrical engineering. As well as a few others. And that is when my life went to hell. As soon as I graduated no where would take me or talk to me or give me the time of day. I would put in hundreds of applications in every field from electrical engineering to fast food and never got anything. Not a single response back. I’m 30 and the last decade of my life has been marked with barely scraping by at every second and dealing with a crippling inferiority complex and sever imposter syndrome while I’m lucky to scrape by with a hundred dollars a year. Fighting my way through the bureaucracy of getting food stamps and medical alone has been a constant struggle and hell. And every time I took one step forward in my life or was close to getting a foot hood and starting to move forward something awful always happens to push me back. I taught myself how to make 3d models and animate at the age of 28 (now 30) so I could pick up commissions and gigs to make money and was starting to form a business. But I had one bad month where I asked to move in with my father and he decided to cut my internet, harass me to go and get a real job and stop “playing on the Computers with my little friends” and now my business is in ruins and I am making less than half what I made before. I just wish someone would give me a chance to prove what I can do. I am so sick and tired of struggling to find a couch to sleep on or have enough cash or food stamps to not go hungry. I try to keep my mind as sharp as I can but it’s hard and I doubt if I will ever be allowed to succeed in life. All this bureaucracy and scrounging makes no sense to me at all. We have everything we could need to fix simple social political issues like this and everyone refuses to. I’m just so fucking tired at this point.

His heart went out to him. He wants society to not forget the cohort of people (15% of us) in that category. They should have some kind of meaningful work and we ignore them. He laments that fact. Dr. Peterson has a huge heart.

I have an IQ of 135-140 (estimated). When I was in school I'd literally not have to listen to the instructors more than once and I'd outscore all the nerds who studied their asses off. I couldn't fathom how someone couldn't understand concepts like I did. It did bite me in the butt later because I developed a laid back and lazy mindset to life in general and let my future go to shit. I'm trying to make up for everything rn. IQ is very important, but an above average IQ with hardwork will push you to success. Anyone who can withstand the brutality of "IQpill" as they seem to call it, can save themselves a lot of problems and disappointment

Two solutions : 1/ Eugenism could improve average IQ and allow the average IQ people to continue to fit in the society which is getting more and more complex Problem(s): Eugenism always has been an ethical issue. To apply it would mean allowing people or not to have children, genetic engineering, etc... Also many people are going to be left behind and live miserable lives until the whole process will be over or put into place as a permanent thing. 2/ Simplify society as a whole. It could be stopping globalization, stopping automation and IA, decentralize population from the big cities, stopping financial speculation, etc.... Problem : You give up freedom and use a totalitarian government to make all of this a reality. Many people won't agree with that and rebel, especially intelligent and creative people which you would then have to persecute. People would live in small villages and be kept like sheeps by the govt to keep society stable and life simple. There are other solutions to this but they also would generate even bigger problems for humanity

@@fernandocabrera4599 Yes absolutely and about that i think we should teach kids on good nutrition and provide affordable good nutrition for everyone. I know there are alot of hungry countries and hungry people today but hopefully they will someday reach that goal as much as possible. But the problem is that the phenomena is happening in rich countries with big cities and more complex socioeconomic structures, where people generally speaking can afford and learn about good nutrition and many other things.

If human intelligence increases by 30 points average in the next 100 years think of all the innovation and problem solving that comes with that and has come so far. I wonder if thats the reason for such fast technological growth since the Industrial Revolution. Crazy stuff thanks for the info, that’s awesome.

After the week was over, I couldn’t even see that he INTENDED to draw an elephant, it looked more like a mountain. So calling it catastrophic would be a compliment. It was UTTERLY unrecognizable. The schools have the kids for 13 years...instead of force feeding them to memorize day after day, educators could work tirelessly on increasing those IQs. What sucks is when you’re Autistic but have an IQ of 125 like myself. I’m amazing cognitively, i my spacial awareness is impeccable, my memory is unmatched by my peers, i can think in images and be accurate about things without even being somewhere based on a memory of the place ir just be being given numbers, I can learn fast absorb vast amounts of knowledge and retain them like a sponge, I easily grasp deep abstract and philosophical ideas, etc, but the Autism limits me on other ways I dont control. Socially, I really struggle, have lots of mental health issues, sensory issues, I get severe chronic migraines, I have terrible insomnia and stomach problems, I cant eat certain foods, I have in controllable anxiety. I deal with bouts of incredible burnout, meltdowns, shut downs. I dont perform well in environments that I are too chaotic where I cant focus. Mentally, I’m like a human AI, but socially retarded basically, and my physical issues limit me too. It suck’s knowing that if wasnt held back my by disability, I could be so successful. And it’s really hard to make and keep friends when in find them to be so dull, boring, and stupid. Cant have any real intellectual conversations that stimulate my brain. I dont care about the weather, the football game, what the lady down the road did last Tuesday. I literally just stay home alone, and research things and play 7 musical instruments. It’s a lonely hellish existence. And I’m not even bragging. Sometimes I wish I was stupid. I really think that ignorance is bliss saying it pretty accurate. Being intellectually gifted on top of being Autistic is a shit existence.

It's sad being perceived as low status by the rest of the group. It's like being blind and wondering if people are just calling you ugly out of jealousy, because you are ugly, or if you will ever find a better shared definition of beauty. Beauty is an objective, not subjective problem because if we are not considered beautiful in some way, we will not get the same opportunities as someone who is. YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL. YOU ARE THE CENTRAL PART OF THE BEAUTIFUL WORLD YOU FOSTER AROUND YOU. EVERYONE WHO SAYS DIFFERENTLY IS TRYING TO HAVE A CONVERSATION ABOUT WHY THEY MAY HAVE MISUNDERSTANDINGS WITH SOMEONE AS BEAUTIFUL AS YOU. If you are going through a hard time, know that the voice in our head telling us we're good enough is what makes us stronger the more we work to understand ourselves and others.
