🎬 In this FilmSpeak video essay, we discuss why the Harry Potter TV Show is the DUMBEST Idea of All Time and why the Harry Potter reboot is a bad idea.

In this video, we'll be discussing the recent announcement of a Harry Potter reboot TV show and why it's a bad idea. Many fans of the franchise are understandably excited about the prospect of returning to the wizarding world, but we argue that this reboot reeks of creative bankruptcy in Hollywood.
Firstly, the original Harry Potter books and movies were incredibly successful and beloved by millions of fans worldwide. It's hard to imagine that a reboot could capture the same magic and charm that made the original series so special. The decision to reboot the franchise feels like a cynical attempt to cash in on the success of the original, rather than a genuine attempt to create something new and innovative.
Secondly, the Harry Potter universe is already incredibly rich and expansive, with countless books, movies, and spin-off materials. It's unclear what a reboot would add to this universe that hasn't already been explored. Instead of rehashing old ideas, Hollywood should be focusing on creating new and exciting stories that push the boundaries of what we expect from the fantasy genre.
Finally, the decision to reboot the Harry Potter franchise ignores the fact that many fans are still reeling from the controversies surrounding J.K. Rowling and her transphobic comments. By rebooting the series without addressing these issues, it feels like Hollywood is turning a blind eye to the concerns of marginalized communities and prioritizing profits over social responsibility.
Overall, we believe that the Harry Potter reboot TV show is a bad idea and a symptom of the creative bankruptcy that plagues Hollywood. Rather than rebooting old franchises, we should be pushing for new and diverse stories that challenge our assumptions and expand our understanding of what's possible in the world of storytelling. Griffin (@griffschiller) explains why rebooting Harry Potter is a bad idea and gives you a Harry Potter rant explaining why the Harry Potter tv show is the worst idea ever. I wish they'd just do an anthology series instead and then expand on any stories which receive the most positive responses. Let's see a story about Snape and the Marauders, maybe a buddy cop type story with Harry as an auror, a Jack the aripper story in the Wizarding World, maybe a story with Merlin, explore other schools in different countries, etc. There is so much potential.

I despise this idea so much. Are the films perfect? Most definitely not but the pros easily outweigh the cons for me and frankly none of the films are bad, which is quite the achievement for the franchise. Not to mention the films are iconic: the casting, score, sets and the abundance of memorable moments make them some of the most recognizable films of all time. A TV series could definitely work and I would love for it to end up great but it’s such an insult to everyone who worked on the films and such a creatively bankrupt decision.

Honestly, I feel the versions we have of these characters are just too iconic. Sure maybe you could do a TV Show remake and incorporate more from the books, but whoever is coming into the role of the main trio is up against some serious challenge, and whoever is playing Snape or McGonagall or God Forbid Umbridge when we get to her have basically already lost. Everyone who stars in this show is going to get torn to shreds.

I read the HP books as a kid. I have pretty fond memories from that experience, since it was the first sort of serious series that I read through, but I wouldn't call myself a big fan. The movies i think are okay, with the exception of 3 which is pretty good, but overall nothing special. I think that as adaptations, they all work very well, even Order of the Phoenix and Deathly Hallows that had to trim out more stuff. But the one that really feels like they missed the mark for me is definitely Half-Blood Prince. That is the one book that I loved from this series, and in the movie they focus on teenage romance, instead of all the cool stuff with Voldemort and the mystery of the Half-Blood Prince. That being said, I don't really want another adaptation, I think it just had to be done right the first time, but this series just doesn't make sense to me, like how are you gonna adapt Philosopher's Stone into a 10 hour series? It's gonna drag like a son of a bitch

Perfectly? Hell no. They r far from perfect for us who prefer books. They ruin Ron character, gave his dialogue to Hermione & make him comedic relief while real comic relief character Peeves the poltergeist wasn't present in any movie. Albus character is destroyed in Goblet of Fire & onward. Goblet of fire is second worst shit of adaptation with a lot cuted content. HBP is true shit of adaptation. The darkest book in HP series is made into teen drama romantic comedy with added cringe scenes that r not in the book while Harry & Ginny had no chemistry. They removed Tom backstory his ties with Grunt family that is THE main focus of the book. And deathly hallows started to make Harry & Hermione a couple.

This video said something that I have been saying since the announcement of the show, which is that...if you are going to extent the Harry Potter lore, sure, go for it, I mean, "Fantastic Beast" failed, but we are still getting Star Wars shows and movies, so as long as the franchise itself can generate profit, you could do something different with it, like you said, if they wanted to do a story on adult Ron and Hermione, they really could. The problem with rebooting this franchise (and I am not going to talk about how I feel about the writer) is that the film franchise, as a whole, the visual aspect of it, the cast, the score...all of it is so iconic that, if you deviate from that, then you are allienating most of your existing fans, and if you stay true to that visual element, and keep the John Willam score, that what they are doing is essentially doing a Harry Potter series JUST without the original cast, and again, that will allienate most of their existing fans. I just recently rewatched the first film with my kid (who's 7), and that first film still holds up because it perfectly captures the feeling of the first book, and considering how the Fantastic Beast franchise has been, I seriously doubt that WB (or the writer, for that matter) has enough respect for the characters and the feel that they created, you know, the things that made the whole franchise the success that it was. I bet that this will end up like most "reboots" that HBOMax/Max/whatever that will be called by the time this series is released, such as the 2021 Gossip Girl, that at best, they will do 2 seasons and... critical and audience response will fall and they will cancel it.

Book purists need to study film. Films aren't supposed to be 1:1 adaptations of the books. They are supposed to adapt the principle aspects of the books whilst giving them a breath of fresh air and a unique, film-wise flair. Film adaptations extenuate the books' meaning whilst also helping us see the books' meaning in a new light, or opening up a new take on the books which is refreshing and exciting, utilising film to enhance the source material. This is exactly what the Harry Potter films did. Quit complaining and go read the books if you want a 1:1 adaptation.

Ever since I saw PoA in the theater I believed a TV show would've been better to adapt the stories. Then we had to the golden age of TV, with especially Game Of Thrones which showed the advantage of adapting into a TV series. I'm honestly looking forward to watch it, as long as they're faithful to the books. I want the Marauders, I want Ron getting back his moments and a lot of other things that are missing from the movies. I agree the casting is really solid, but the pros and cons aren't just one sided. There are other opportunities for amazing casting in and of itself, plus having characters closer to their depiction in the books. Like the adults who should be way younger for the timeline to be consistent. Anyways, there are a lot of people who agree with my sentiment. I want to see what they're able to bring on the table. I think there's enough to justify it's existence. In the end, we'll see. Cheers from France! 🍻

I couldn't disagree more.. I apologise for if I sound harsh, but this video is a rant & so is this comment: *1) The actors?* - The original actors are iconic as these characters, but they aren't the only actors in the world of similar quality, Nick Frost is a prime example of who could play Hagrid & bring something unique to the character whilst respecting Robbie. Plenty of actors exist that with time, can become as iconic as the originals. The three playing the golden trio will have their big break with this series as Dan, Rupert & Emma did with the films, its the circle of life. *2) Disservice to the original actors?* - I find it ironic how you criticise the backlash the future actors have already received then immediately jump on with a backlash type claim that it is a disservice to the original actors, it seems semi-contradictory. It would be a disservice if the adaption explicitly spat in the original actors' faces & disregarded their performances as inferior, but its doing none of that, its merely casting someone new to bring the role to life for this new adaptation & hasn't disregarded the originals, they can't exactly bring back the entire original cast can they? How would you go about telling the kids playing the golden trio that their casting is a disservice to Daniel, Rupert & Emma? How are those children going to feel? *3) Why make it at all?* - Simple: To bring the books we love so much to life in a way that the films simply couldn't. This world is too large to be constrained to two & a bit hour films, a TV series is needed very much, and whilst the films adapted them respecfully for the most part, it simply isn't the true story. They'll have plenty of time to tell the books' story in a way the films never could, which will bring out elements of the world we've not seen on the big screen before & make the world all the more iconic. Take Half Blood Prince for instance: I thought it was a vile, atrocious adaptation, and the TV series will hopefully bring the dark story to life, many argue Half Blood Prince is the best book in the series because of its plot, imagine seeing that in live action! *4) Conclusion:* - I understand mate, the films are close to your heart, they are to mine & many others' and all, and I don't mean to seem like I think you're brain dead wrong. I just think your perspective is one of someone who ought to give this TV series a chance & see what else it can bring to the wizarding world, that's all. Cheerio now :D

This might seem odd but I've always thought a tv show about Mr. Weasley exploring the Muggle world having some adventures seeing we didn't see much of that kind of thing in the movies apart from the little sequence in Order of the Phoenix. The show could have appearances by some other Harry Potter characters like George, he could go to a Muggle joke shop to get ideas and see what type of pranks Muggles play it could be both a happy and sad moment as he enjoys looking at all the jokes but feels sad wishing that Fred could be there to enjoy it with him. Perhaps Mr. Weasley could go into a toy shop and find a Rubber Duck and buy it. The Weasley family could watch a film, go on a plane, see a magic show, go to the circus, and really enjoy themselves not only them but Fred as well. There are many things they could do with Mr. Weasley enjoying every bit if it. The show doesn't have to be long, maybe just a mini series. This is only my idea.

@@FilmSpeak Honestly, I wouldn't have minded a HP reboot if it was in the form of an animated TV series. It would fix a lot of issues that would have come with trying to make a live-action TV adaptation. It would be cheaper (in a good way), the magic could really shine in animation, people won't obsess over whether a character's VA matches physically with their character, and it'd help distinguish itself from the classic live action 8 film series and not be overshadowed by it. The performances from the live action films wouldn't hang like the Sword of Damocles over the TV adaptation. It could also serve as a good way of more faithfully adapting the books and giving respect to a lot of characters who got short changed in the original live action film series. I love the films but so much got trimmed from the books that they're like two different universes really. There were so many good things from the books that just never got any spotlight or which were misconstrued. Alan Rickman gave a masterful performance as Snape and it's always his voice that comes to mind whenever I read Snape in the books but in terms of adaptation, Film Snape may have sanding offed not only the vices of Book Snape but also some of Book Snape's virtues as well. The Occlumency lessons scene is what comes to mind when I think of a scene from the books that got butchered in the films. Hell, the fact that Book Snape grew up so impoverished that he would've thought _the Weasleys_ were wealthy is an important aspect of that character that doesn't get communicated in the films. If one had only seen the film version of "The Prince's Tale", they wouldn't be wrong in coming to the conclusion that Young Film Snape looked more well off than Young Film Lily. If one had only watched the films and not read the books, especially in a long time, they would never have understood that Severus Snape was 1 of the 2 canonical male sexual assault survivors in the series and that the reason why Snape hated Harry is that every time he looked at Harry, all he could see is the eyes of his former best friend (Lily) staring out of the face of his bully, tormentor, and sexual assaulter (James). The very sight of Harry was triggering to the traumatized Snape. But one would never really grasp that if they had never really read the books. If there is a TV adaption of Harry Potter coming, I'd very much prefer it to be an animated one rather than a dommed-from-the-start live-action TV adaption. Also, trans rights are human rights.

Animated series will be more viable and visually can do things which live action may not be able to pull of.. also you can cast really talented voice actors who aren't kids but can act like 10 year old.. this will be the safe option. I don’t like/agree with most of Hollywood and despise most of their values (like… from the culture that brought you the metoo movement). So its about damn time people start saying “so what?” Especially since people like JK who have been cancelled dont even get a chance to defend or clarify themselves. Let the 200 upset people not watch it. Its far more beneficial to cater to the quiet thousands that don’t care. It happened with Hogwarts Legacy, itll happen again with this show. They could've done a Founders series, a Marauders series, hell they could've done an Ilvermorny spinoff and cast some American teen actors and get some of that Stranger Things/Wednesday hype, or an anime about the Japanese Wizarding school, or just dump an entire Gringotts' worth of Gold in front of Dan, Rupert and Emma's respective doors to actually make a reunion sequel, but they went back to rebooting the books instead

Rowling and WB as a collective and run the well dry. She has nothing else to contribute to Wizarding World- tanked with Fantastic Beasts- and isn’t willing to forfeit the franchise enough to allow other creatives to expand the mythology. So as a result we’re being forced to endure this unnecessary reboot show of the franchise. I’ll pass and just rewatch the films

You keep saying remake as if this is based on the movies. It is (I’m hoping) a more faithful adaptation of the books. The movies were adapted as well as they could be, but they cut out so much. And as great as Alan Rickman was… he was a 50 year old playing a 30 year old. Also, because the movies were helmed by different people the look of the world is very inconsistent.

Three days before this adaptation was announced, I was telling my friend that the only thing that could tempt me back into the world of Harry Potter (after the terrible things they’ve done since the release of Deathly Hallows), would be a more faithful tv show adaptation of the books.

I definitely agree with you. I think that everyone is constantly going to be looking at the characters and thinking of the originals instead. It's going to be hard to separate the two. And I 1000% agree that they should delve into things we didn't get a lot of in the movies like the marauders and stuff...that would be so much better. I mean I love HP, I love the movies and the books, and a part of me is kind of intrigued to see what they will do, but the other part of me is like just leave it alone. It's one probably the best books/movies series ever, and I don't want to see it be mishandled

I first saw the trailer for this thing in a video titled "Harry Potter reboot trailer breakdown" Seeing the trailer there, I thought "dude, what's with this shitty clickbait? Who made this trailer? No one in their right mind would have the trailer to a reboot that looks like it's the exact same thing" I was shocked to learn that was actually it.

I don't think ANY classic should be directly remade. It will always be seen as nothing more than a weak copy of the original. Star Trek Into Darkness Psycho Nightmare on Elm Street Rob Zombie's Halloween The Lion King If anything they should remake bad movies and fix what went wrong with them. Also, why retred old ground to begin with? Do they want to turn into the mess that Star Wars is in? If they want to do a show set in the HP world then do it at another school with new characters and put in the work to make us as viewer invested in them. Even from a business standpoint it makes sense. A whole different school with all new characters and houses means loads of new merchandise people will buy. It's smart creatively and economically.

Im not sure about this. But JK Rowling has a iron clad contract and rights to anything associated to Harry Potter. I dont think she would sing of on anyone expanding on her world ( like making prequels she did not write that have her characters and have to do with the story) like tye Marauders etc. I would much rather she write the books and wait a few years for a adaptation. Directors rarely have the imagination to give justice to the literature. GoT being and example. When the directors took over the course of the story instead of waiting for the final books, the fucked up the whole thing

Since all outfits unlocked Avengers has been pretty fun. Still buggie but very playable. Picking how you want to play and the best way to do it. A bit confusing for a minute

Warner Brothers are in a complicated spot now aren't they. I can't help but feel that since the lackluster success since the merger they're trying to find the one IP that will set them back on course, and the original harry potter is seemingly the only one left, as excitement for its spinoffs has collapsed. Legacy characters seem impossible as the leads have distanced themselves from Rowling, who has maintained a stranglehold on the IP, and the disappointment of FB making a big screen commitment anytime soon unlikely. So they did the only thing they could do, which is also the one which seems the most disingenuous, profiting off of a figure whose lost a lot of good will, and repurposing IP that for far too many is still too recent and essential to retouch.

I will never watch it, they did the charmed reboot and I never ever watched 1 single episode, I mean, they did the same with that, a fantastic 8 seasons, one of the most beautiful endings of a tv show I've ever seen, and they thought oh, we will just make a reboot, none of the original cast, it doesn't work, when I state I will not watch the harry potter tv series, I mean it, and I won't, it won't last 10 years and it will flop very quickly, they won't make money from making this, they will lose money, no one wants to see any other person play any of the cast really, especially the trio, and someone else playing Snape and Hagrid, yeah that is a 100% no! they could have made something new, it won't be exciting we know the story, the books are there, the movies, we know what we need to know with the movies, they are wasting their time, the problem is they have no braincells, and can't make up a story of their own and quite honestly they are lazy, they don't want too, they want quick money, but when they see how bad this is going to be, especially when it airs, they will regret it.

I think people need to chill on the hot takes about this movie. We don’t know anything about it. I have a strong feeling it’ll be an animated series which is exactly what parents will want to see so their kids can get in to it at a young age. HBO did this with the dc heroes to get a new generation in to it from a really early age. If they do that, it could be a hit. Just not for adults.
