THIS STORY:
The Harpe Brothers were American murderers, highwaymen and river pirates who operated in Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois and Mississippi in the late 18th century. They are often considered the earliest documented serial killers in the United States history.
Loyal to the British Crown during the American Revolution, the Harpes became outlaws after the war and began robbing and killing settlers in the remote frontier west of the Appalachian Mountains.
They are believed to have killed 39 people, and possibly as many as 50. As the Harpes' crimes gained notoriety, vigilante groups formed to avenge their victims, and they were eventually tracked down and executed around the turn of the century. Their savagery has since entered American folklore, appearing to have been motivated more by blood lust than financial gain.

The Angel face you see is the Haserot, named “The Angel of Death Victorious". The stoic angel is seated on the marble gravestone of canning entrepreneur Francis Haserot and his family. Holding an extinguished torch upside-down, it represents a symbol of life extinguished. Wings are outstretched and the gaze is straight ahead.
IN THE END, DEATH ALWAYS WINS. LEST THE FACES NOT BE FORGOTTEN...
This channel is focused on casually walking and viewing a handful of the thousands of forgotten names and faces at various cemeteries near and afar. Seeing their faces up close. And when able, telling the stories behind their names.
Most graves are unknown and lost to history.
Some are famous.
And some infamous....
....and some with tragic endings.

Man's inhumanity to man is truly unbelievable. The Harpe Brothers deserved no mercy for the atrocities they committed "just for fun" or because they were "annoyed." I'd never heard this story, Ron. Thanks for sharing it.

A lot of psychopaths in history. And the weird thing is we vote them into high offices, elect them as politicians, they do well in the military and usually rise high and fast through the ranks, we call them priest or preacher, and a lot of us work with these sick, twisted freaks on a daily basis. I think psychopaths are more common than we like to admit, but violent psychopaths that commit murder are a lot less common. Probably only a handful of psychopaths will go on to murder someone (although any and all of them are capable of it. They have no remorse and no conscience). It sure is strange how we look for those psychopathic qualities in leaders.

They were probably sick just like them. Clearly. Only women get a free pass and aren't held accountable for their actions, especially if a man or men are present to be held accountable. Even when women are held accountable, 90% of the time they're slapped on the wrist. We're more likely to punish 13 year old boys than grown women. That's sickening.

Fascinating Ron, I've never heard of the Harpe brothers before this. I bet this was a story told by winter fires back in the 18th & 19th centuries. You did it very well, I' d be wanting an escort out in to the dark of the outdoors toilet after that ! Around the same era in Scotland we had Sawney Bean and his cannibal family, but they had their good points😂, unlike the Harpe brothers they didn't kill their children, probably because they were useful for inbreeding and extending the clan. Also they restricted their hunting ground to around their cave.

I’m from Mississippi and one of the most haunted places in Natchez is King’s Tavern. It’s said you can sometimes hear a baby crying and they believe it to be the ghost of the baby that the Harpe brother killed when he grabbed the baby by the feet and swung it into the wall to hush it. They say the Harpe brother, after murdering the baby, went back to the bar to order another drink while laughing about it 😡😭

I love family history. I always look up all the people in my crime watching haha. See if I’m related 😂. Sure enough related to Wiley’s wife wayy back.

Wow Ron, a very gruesome story of the past, RIP to all the Harpe brothers victims, thanks for this story. There are probably more killings similar to this, but have not come to light.
