The harley davidson roadking you would think is a great bike. But Join us as we delve into the key aspects that contribute to our disappointment with the bike being a 1st timers 1st bagger with the RoadKing. From its open air design and questionable wind blocking, we leave no stone unturned in highlighting the drawbacks of this iconic motorcycle.
Discover why the RoadKing fails to deliver the exhilarating riding experience that many enthusiasts seek. We discuss, limited handling capabilities, and subpar suspension, all of which make for an unsatisfactory journey on the open road.
Furthermore, we shed light on the Harley Davidson RoadKing's reliability concerns. We discuss common issues reported by owners, such as frequent breakdowns, electrical problems, and costly maintenance requirements, which can negatively impact the overall ownership experience.
While we understand the appeal of the Harley Davidson brand and the RoadKing's classic heritage, we believe it's essential to provide an honest assessment to help riders make informed decisions.

That’s all the reasons I love the Road king. Just a fuel gauge, and a speedometer. When go for long rides. I don’t want to be connected to society. I don’t want to constantly monitor gauges, I don’t bring coffee makes, televisions, mattress, and computers. Most of the time. I don’t even know where I’m going.

I finally bought my first motorcycle in April of 2021....and it is a Road King. I picked the Road King for many reasons. The Road King is very versatile being it has the bagger frame for long distance, yet it is nimble for a big bike and can be cruised around town or used as a commuter. The Road King will never go out of style, being it has what you need and not everything you want. Mine is a 2005, and doesnt look much different than one from the 90's or a newer model. There is no infotainment system which will be "outdated" in a couple of years, nor does it have a bunch of other bells and whistles which could fail/break. I wear a full helmet and added a Cardo packtalk which allows me to listen to tunes if I want. The Road King is my hot rod, long distance rider, commuter, and grocery getter all rolled up in one. But to each his own....all types of bikes out there for all types of people. Keep the rubber side down! ✌️

Nice video. I’m 61. I’ve ridden from Atlanta, Ga to Dallas, Tx on a Softail. No problems with comfort or storage. Now I have a Road King, more comfort and storage (obviously) than the Softail. If I want a cigarette lighter or a place to store my phone, I’ll get a convertible. Love my King.

I own a 2017 Road King and love it. The Road King was not intended to be a full bagger. It was built for us old-school riders who want to get away from all the amenities of home. I don't own or watch TV, I don't even have a radio in my home. I sure don't want one on my bike. I ride for the freedom. It is my place to get away and clear my head and get some mental and emotional therapy. I did put on a phone cradle but rarely ever use it. Most times my phone stays at home unless I am taking a multi day trip. I wired in a Garmin dock for those few times I need directions in my face because I have to be somewhere at a certain time and unfamiliar with the area but it rarely ever sees my bike. It did have a windshield when I bought it but no lowers. Lets you know you are still alive when the June bugs hit you in the shin.😁 I did upgrade and add lighting to my bike because I ride at night as well. Nothing more peaceful than taking a long night ride on country roads. Not a another vehicle in site. I did a cross country trip on my 2008 1200 Low to attend my daughter's wedding back in the day and loved it. Wouldn't trade the experience for nothing. I wouldn't trade my Road King for a full bagger no way. If need be I can get the trunk for it and take it right back off again. ✌️

I like your videos- just now saw this one. And while I love your style and honesty- as a 62 year old rider who has experience with other baggers-I now only own a Road King- and I travel from state to state-old school. I guess the newer riders need the doors and AC with full electronics- but again-is that really riding? I never take loud music when I go to relax at the beach- because if I do-I’m not there to enjoy why I went there for in the first place. I ride for the wind, the openness and freedom. That is the Road King experience that I ride for. Otherwise-I would take my wife’s SUV with AC and all the seat comforts and messages. Let’s get real here. Ride on and Be safe out there-from a 62 year old Harley rider that intents to keep riding even if it it eventually on a trike.

My first bagger was a 06 Road King with 20k miles, that I bought 7yrs ago for just under $10k so it was affordable for me as a first-time buyer. Since then I’ve added some performance upgrades and put down heavy miles on it. I got a batwing fairing w/speakers I can take on or off depending if I’m going on a long distance ride or just want to rock the vicla “cholo” style. I’m hitting 100k miles on the next oil change, so it’s definitely been tried & true.

Nope. It's the opposite. The RK allows for the rider to experience the realness of riding, fully exposing one to the elements: wind, rain, dirt, rocks, bugs, etc. Being exposed fully to the elements (no screen) builds toughness and character. I got peppered to the dome, chest, and arms, by a swarm of bees the other day. It was beautiful. Being at one with your horse, feeling all, and hearing nothing but the sounds she makes, mixed with the wind, is spiritual. Now, after the blood, sweat, and tears (aka joy) spent riding miles of raw unshielded highway, RK riders earn the right to retire into the peaceful comfort of a two-wheeled car. 😉 Stay safe out there, Brother..

All that said, I am with you in a sense, I know I will get a Street or Road Glide one day but I will hold onto the Road King for short trips or around town. As I want to make some upgrades on it. I ride a 2014 Road King. The reason I bought this bike is because of its simplicity, its a motorcylce, no frills bells and whistles. I don't even have a cradle for my phone on the handle bars, thow it in the saddle bags. I just love looking at that big chrome headlight bezel/housing and an unobstructed view of the road before me. I love the fact that it doesnt look like a rolling piece of plastic like its big brothers do. Yeah, I love creature comforts too and when I'm heading out on a really long road trip, Its on my BMW GS Adventure, the ultimate bike. Diggin your videos, keep up the good work.

My first bike was a wide glide. Still have it. A first bagger for a person really depends on who they are. If your focused and comfortable on a bike with the riding skills to back it up get a bike with all the bells and whistles. If your an easy person to distract then you don't need to be distracted by a button when the truck in front of you slams on brakes. Bells a whistle bikes I think are for people who have for years been comfortable on a bike and are first thinkers in safety. Some folks got enough sense to pull over and figure out something. Some do it at 70 miles an hour. Rolling dice there. Hey, great video and thanks for posting.

Nice video. I like the honesty. I think we all sorta change our tastes over time. I bought a cheap honda shadow to start. Then a yamaha raider 1900cc for that big torque, and recently, finally was in the position to get a Harley. Was looking at newer Road Kings and the Heritage Classics. But ended up going with a 2012 blacked out street glide with really low miles. I wanted all the creature comforts this time around. I began to love the look of bags over the stripped down look. Maybe ill change back to wanna getting punched around by wind again one day. But even 2 hours at 80 mph with only mini-apes in front of me was starting to take away that feeling of riding enjoyment for me. No more looking at the landscape and smelling the air. Just a feeling of wanting to reach my destination asap. With the street glide the enjoyment of long rides is back.

I went the other direction and found that I used the stereo less and less the more I road long distance. I liked my iPhone map better than HD maps. Adding a full size windshield and fork winder deflectors I got better wind protection on the Road Kind than I did with my Electra Glide. Also, a lot less distractions in my view (dash lights/gauges) at night. Granted I was mostly only riding Iron Butt rides. Oh also, I bought a tour pack for my road kind. Once you have heated grips and a tour pack it hard to live without them.

I had a soft tail once and the wind buffeting is awful especially when you have the half helmet. The glasses feel like they’re going to fly off your face. I got a windshield and that helped but it takes the look away. I learned that if you’re getting on the freeway I would wear a full face helmet and I would wear my earbuds for my iPhone and it was actually very pleasant. I also think tall ape bars are going to cause you to catch a lot of air so I just stayed with low bars. I ended up getting a streetglide, it’s much better and you can travel long distances, oh and it has navigation and a stereo and air conditioning.

Dude! Great intro..LMAO. Was that Cantore out in the hurricane?! 😂😂🤣 I do understand all the shortfalls. As I've ridden, I agree with with your feelings. RK is NOT a first bike, none of the tourers are. That said, as many others will mention, not having 'stuff' is a connected and pure feeling you can not get on faired bikes. I can certainly see why it would be great to have both. I go on long country rides on my RK, no shield, no helmet, t-shit. and it feels wonderful. Yeah, I know, but... Typically I have the shield and helmet on when cool enough. ☮

I would love to see a video on what made you fall for baggers and the Road Glide as your bike of choice. I agree though on the lack of tech on the Road King, especially given the price for the Special models. It’s the smoothest bagger ride out there, but not much of a value unless you absolutely crave the simple stripped down thing. I still like it though.

I have had a Road King Special, Street Glide Special and now the Road Glide Special, Street Glide ST and the Street Glide CVO. I bought the Road King Special as a second bike when I had the Street Glide Special because it was stripped down and it had the 114 vs the 103 on the 2015 Street Glide Special. I did have to put a windshield on it as the wind on the chest at highway speeds was too much and very exhausting over the miles and hours ridden. So I used the RKS for my short trips under 200 miles or so in a day. Ride safe and enjoy.

I think the road king is the best choice for a first bagger. The biggest reasons are, first it’s a lot lighter than the other baggers and you don’t have to contend with the extra weight of the fairing which is good if you’re upgrading from a smaller bike. Plus the road king has great maneuverability. I have a road king and an ultra limited. I can maneuver around a lot better on the king. The road king was my first bagger after coming from a sportster so I know first hand

Bro I have to say, I just bought my 2023 Road King Special. It came with the 114 etc, etc. I commute 102 miles round trip 5 days a week. The reason I bought it is to safe money on gas because my truck was killing my pocket spending $140.00 average vs $48.00 That been said. I wanted the street glide but even my road king is too expensive. I had a sportster 1200 custom for years bought it brand new and I had fun with it with power enough to take me anywhere I want to. This bagger is powerful, comfortable up until certain level. And you right I would love to have a batwing would be better having a street glide which is my dream bike. But with Harley prices I don’t know if I want to jump into it. So far I’m happy with it and I’m looking forward to add a good batwing on it. By the way mine came with rain mode, traction control, tire monitor, gear management with rpm etc.

I think these are all valid points to make when considering a bike for touring. I found your video searching for some answers for my own questions. Would it not be cost effective to buy a Road King and turn it into the touring bike of your dreams? I can buy a '16 Road King for about $16k or $17k (used and presumably MOSTLY stock from what I see). I can add all the touring details that come with the Road Glide for about $7k-$9 (Advanblack has everything you need color matched and I've built a cart around the RoadGlide for under 8K) this includes luxury custom tour pack with speaker pods, lowers with speaker pods, crashbar, FRAME mounted fairing, etc. Add speakers and amps and you're set. This puts me at $26k total (w/o labor) for a fully custom touring bagger. You can't buy that and even if you could, it may cost you about the same or more. Nobody has really done what I suggest from the looks of it. I'd love to see one someday.

The RK is the easiest to customize. because of the points you made. also, its preference I prefer the look, it just suits my personal preference just did a trip from Houston to Flagstaff going through the Navajoe Res, up from Gallop NM round trip 3k miles creature comfort, is relative the batwing and the shark nose offer more wind protection, but the shark nose of the Road Glide doesn't cover one's hands. I added the hand guards from Memphis Shades to get the cold air off my hands and it did just fine. A lot is just preference.

I currently have a 2019 Road Glide Ultra I purchased as a new previous-model-year bike in the fall of 2020 for a great price. But am considering trading it in on a (gently) used 2021 Road King Special. The ‘19 RGU is my second full-on Harley bagger (I had a 2007 Street Glide prior to that). I thought the RGU would be the “dream bike”. While great at speed, handling it at slower speeds, parking lots, or tight spaces is a bear. After two seasons I’ve done numerous mods to try to get it more to my liking however there is nothing that an be done about the weight. I recently tried a RKS at a Harley ride day and really liked it. The same H-D dealership happened to have a ‘21 RKS in their used bike section. Windshield, wind deflectors and 14” apes already added. I don’t tend to use the stereo on my RGU on longer rides/trips anyway, plus have helmet bluetooth for tunes when in the mood (which I find I can hear better at highway speeds anyway). And find I used Google Maps on my phone for navigating rather than the stock H-D nav system. I also find the RKS much easier to handle at slower speeds than the RGU. However I have invested a lot in upgrades on the RGU including a very recent change to Ohlins shocks over the past winter. So I’d be taking a hit with that by trading it in so soon after having added them. Unfortunately I am not in position to own the RGU and the RKS so have to decide. Many of the things you say make the RK suck are the things I see as preferable for me. But again this would be my third, not first, bagger. I’m thinking the more basic setup of the RKS vs the weight/bulk of the RGU make the RK preferable for me. To me the biggest downside of the RK vs the RG is I’d lose the ability to charge my phone as I ride, without some sort of mod to the RKS, which is particularly handy on long rides/trips, which I do often, not to mention the loss of the creature comforts the RGU offers. However I’m sure adding a charging port is a relatively easy/inexpensive mod. I wish I could afford both, but it is a tough decision for me. Your video is definitely giving me food for thought though. Thanks for posting this one! 👍
