The Hardest Ride: Can We Make The Time Cut?! | We Made Our Own Epic Giro Stage

Спорт

The route of the 2021 Giro D'Italia is littered with the brutal mountains of the Apennines, the Pyrenees, and the Alps. Although the Queen's stage itself was shortened, the profile alone is truly epic. Feeling inspired, Conor and Hank decided to honour the race by creating their own Queen's stage here in the UK. With over 200km and over 5000m of elevation on the menu, this was going to be one brutal day in the saddle. Will they make the time cut? Will they even make it to the finish?! You'll have to watch to find out...

You didn't fail. That was tougher than the Giro Queen's stage. Far steeper gradients and no long down hills like in the Giro. You did about 15 climbs more than I could do and I think I am quite fit. Well done to Connor and Hank, ably supported by Hank's dad.

Yet the 3 big climbs and the upndown in between, accounting for more than 3000 meters of climb where at a median altitude of around 1750- 1800 meters, thus you should account for the less oxygen in the air... At sea level you have 20.9% pp of oxygen, at 300 meters you have a 20.1% equivalent pp . At 1800m you go down to 16.7% equivalent pp. Thus the 3 major climb, and more than half of the elevation gain of the tappa would have had 17% less oxygen pressure. The reality is even worst as there's a pressure loss in the air to blood transfer, and it's almost a constant independent from altitude, it's around 1.6 to 1.9 % of pp equivalent, thus lowering the useful oxygen from 20.1 to (assuming a good 1.6) 18.5% at 300 m, and from 16.7 to 15.1% increasing the difference to 18.4%. Now, in a racing world that accounts for every half percentage of gain in friction, aerodynamics, weight... I do believe that having more than 18% less useful oxygen does make a difference, especially since in a climb the air resistance is a small component up a hill, the drag reduction from thinner air is nothing compared to the body having less fuel to work with. Thus, to get comparable effort to the real deal you'd need 800m of elevation more, or something along this line.

This type of weather reminds me of a bicycle tour myself and a friend did back in the 80s in England. We stopped to ask a lady if she could fill our water bottles. I asked her why there were no garden taps like we have back in Australia so we could fill our own bottles, her reply was 'why would you need garden taps?, it rains'

Missing a peloton and the ability to slipstream AT ALL, for any respite.. is pretty telling for these 2 and their attempt at a 'UKGiro', but an indication of how incredibly hard these climbs are......with added wet, cold weather. Film of riders in a WT peloton do not linger much on riders, tho we know they are suffering, especially sprinters, who manage to climb the same dang mountains as GC guys (who love to climb) and finish within time constraints. Even those guys ride faster than Colin and Hank in this demo.. Brutal endurance sport, professional cyclists are AMAZINGLY STRONG men and women......CHAPEAU ! A bit of struggle for Colin, who flashed back on all the tough moments of his past career, happy to be done with it... Thanks for your effort, Colin, Hank and Hank's Dad!!

Amazing effort guys. Those hills are brutal. Some are tough even walking up! When I saw the route on Strava I knew something momentous was afoot. I wasn’t disappointed. Chapeau to all 🏆

Last year September I persuaded my partner the best holiday we could take would be a bike packing trip to North Devon. I probably should have checked the climbs first, especially since she was riding a single-speed loaded with packs. But the gods of cycling were with us, no rain and I only received brutal verbal abuse on a couple of killer climbs. Ultimately the scenery, freedom and cream teas won out and I got to keep my skin. Best holiday!

I'm 6'6 and weigh 300 pounds, do weight lifting etc but need to lose a few pounds (sorta lol). I've found the perfect tyres for me. Non Pneumatic Tyres, just solid rubber, no air at all. So nothing to burst. No valve to break. Every time I tried to ride my bike the inner tube would burst and tubeless was only slighty better. Non Pneumatic Tyres have allowed me to ride a bike again. :) I wish you guys would cover these tyres if only as you are the biggest channel on pushbikes and it is important for heavy riders to know how to get back into cycling, considering we need more people on cycles and there is an obesity epidemic going on.

Better weather and you would have got there.. plus having done a few races and tested it against my practice times it's worth 3-5kmph average more on closed roads with not traffic, lights, give ways etc plus you can commit to the decent knowing a truck isn't cutting the corner coming the other way. Well done guys
