I went to a hockey game once. Toronto at Chicago, at the old Chcago stadium. From what I was told, it was Saturday night hockey broadcast in Canada. The fighting started right after the face-off. All I could say was, I came to a boxing match and a hockey game broke out. Hilarious

I met these guys once at a bar after an Erie Otters game they made an appearance at. Even though they were totally shit-faced, all three of them still took the time to sign my jersey. It is probably the most valuable thing I own, at least on a personal level, as I got to cross meeting the Hanson Brothers off of my bucket list.

Yeah, we got a lota losses! (LOL) Puttin on the foil! Great movie. (Get Dave Hanson's autobiography - Original Slap Shot. Great book and lots of very funny stories about the movie, hockey and his life in general.) The Carlson brothers and Dave Hanson were great in this movie! They didn't need to act, just be themselves. Everyone who knows the them says they are good, stand up guys.

The foil was supposed to give them better punches in a fight. But realistically it doesn't do anything

That, with the interdigital taping, gave a brass knuckle sort of stability and supposedly the foil could do superficial cutting when 'the gloves came off' - although I'm not entirely convinced about that.

You are obviously too young to have seen hockey in the 60's and 70's. It was disappointing if there wasn't at least one bad 'check'. 'Bench Clearer's' were not uncommon.
It's only been about 20-30 years since helmets started to be used. When I watched as a kid (Hockey Night in Canada every Saturday from birth) helmets were never worn. 1st guy to actually wear a helmet was goal tender that got major facial/head injury. When he went back on the ice after healing he had a custom designed helmet. For awhile it was only goalies that started wearing helmets through the leagues. Gradually moved over to rest of teams as safety became more of a concern.
