"The Hand of God" M61 20mm Vulcan Cannon

Ойын-сауық

Battlefield Vegas nicknamed their M61 20mm Vulcan Cannon “The Hand of God” because it can lay great vengeance and furious anger upon its target. They brought the M61 Vulcan mounted on a British FV432 APC to the Big Sandy Shoot in October 2018. It pretty much stole the show. Every time it fired, there was a huge crowd cheering it on.
It’s not every day you get to see an M61 Vulcan in action. They’re normally found on F-18 and F-16 fighter jets. That’s where Battlefield got theirs - an F-16. It was de-milled, but their talented gunsmith were able to put it back together and get it working again.
Vulcans fire the electrically primed 20mm round at a rate of 6,000 rounds per minute. Battlefield was able to slow down the rate of fire to about 3,500 RPM by replacing the hydraulic motor with an electric one. This is beneficial because ed them to reduce the rate of fire to around 3,500 RPM which is good in a way because at 6,000 RPM, if you blink your eye, you can miss the burst. A slower rate of fire actually allows the burst to be appreciated.
The 20mm projectiles fired at Big Sandy weighed 1,500 grains and left the muzzle at around 3,500 feet per second. According to Robert Bigando, the big gun expert who loaded all the rounds and tended to the gun, the 20mm round is extremely hot and produces very high pressures. “It’s a ripper downrange,” he said.
One of Vulcan’s biggest disadvantages stems from the fact that it was designed as an airborne weapon system. 20mm rounds feed out of its large 511 round ammo drum, and then back into it once fired. (This is so spent shells don’t get get sucked into jet engines, or fall on people’s heads.) This makes it a complicated gun to shoot and maintain. It also makes it extremely rare.
As far as Bigando is aware, there’s only two firing Vulcans in civilian hands in the USA and despite it’s finicky nature, “It’s one of the meanest guns out there,” said Bigando.
If you’re interested in firing the Vulcan, you can do that at Battlefield Vegas. Besides having an indoor range located just off the strip, they just opened an outdoor range a few miles outside Las Vegas where civilians can fire a variety of large caliber weapons like an M60A1 tank, miniguns, and artillery guns.

As an old Vulcan crewman, I can tell you the gun in the video has been slowed down considerably. When a real M61 fires, it whines. You can't hear any individual shots like from a machine gun. Also, the tracers are spaced every 7th round. When fired at the designed speed, it looks like a flamethrower at night. I suspect that the gun has been slowed so that it won't be so expensive to fire. After live fire training events in Korea, we needed dump trucks to carry the brass casings back to base.

Yes your really appreciate a 50 round burst that lasts for two seconds more than a 50 round bursts that lasts a fraction of a second. If Ammo was plentiful and cheaper we would be all over the high rate of fire

I think at its normal cyclic rate, the fun ends too fast, besides, when you're looking at something mighty like a 20mm machine cannon, it's still an impressive beast running at relatively low cyclic rate such as 1000rpm or even 850rpm. If they could reliably source surplus 20mm shells, I'm sure they'd be more keen to run it at a higher cyclic rate.

Spent 3 years of my life living in a M163A1 Self Propelled Vulcan, still suffering from PALD (post ammo let down) from not shooting one since 1986, about 6 weeks before I got out we were at the range qualifying and I was talking to our POL(petroleum, oils, lubricants) clerk who had been in our unit the whole time I was and was getting out within days of me, he mentioned that he never got to shoot one, we always tried to make sure all the support personal got a chance to fire one at least once because without them those guns couldn't be kept running, so I went and talked to the range officer and arranged for him to shoot my ammo allotment, a full 1,100 round drum, it didn't matter if I didn't qualify because I was getting out within weeks anyways, they agreed and he took my place in the firing rotation, when he came up out of that gun tub his face was lit up and he had an ear to ear smile that to this day I wish I had a picture of, it was worth giving up my last chance to shoot one just to see it.

XrayxRich I was a Vulcan gunner in the Army back in the 80's, on the control panel of one is a round counter that works like the trip meter in an older car but in reverse, whenever you'd load the storage drum in the system however many rounds you loaded in it you'd turn a knob on the round counter to bring the number up to the corresponding amount of ammo you had in the system, then as you fired the gun it would count down to zero, that way you could keep track and see when your ammo started running low so you'd know you were coming up on time to reload and not get caught with your pants down with an empty system. Given how much that ammo cost I used to always joke around with my buddies and say they should have a dollar sign next to the round counter and it should run foreward from zero.

@@spdfatomicstructure I can assure you it doesn't cost $400,000 dollars to shoot a Vulcan for 12 seconds. I see all kinds of wild myths about that gun on KZread and believe me not any of them are true. First one is the "Armor piercing" myth, although there is a round for it that's classified as armor piercing it only has the ability to puncture light armor and not the hull of a tank, not even a medium class tank, I've seen people run wild with that one in the comments sections of KZread videos, they see the words "armor piercing" and their imaginations run wild with it, remember, they made "armor piercing" ammo for M1 rifles that surely doesn't mean US troops were knocking out German tanks in WW2 with M1's. And the cost of shooting one, I can assure you whole heartedly that it doesn't cost almost 1/2 million dollars to shoot it for 12 seconds, in the 1980's it was something like $7,200 for a drum full of TPT ammo and a drum full was good for just under 30 seconds of firing time, as I recall a drum of HEIT/SD was around $11,000 dollars, and once again that's almost 30 seconds of firing time. I don't know where people get these outlandish prices for 20mm ammo but it couldn't possibly have gone up that much. If someone is selling live ammo on the internet and people are basing their math on that you can bet the government isn't paying that much for it.

All these gatling type guns made by G.E. and its employees were and still are great weapons that our enemies fear and respect, and I'm proud to have played a small part in their manufacture and success in defending our country. "When they first built the vulcan, they put 'em on F-18s, F16s, almost all of the fighting aircraft." That kinda makes it seem like M61 has been around since the 80s, when in reality, it was first used in the f-104 Starfighter as early as 1958. The first Vulcan prototype was completed almost ten years before that. So don't understate the legacy of this beast! Also the rate of fire is significantly toned down on the gun used in the M163. In the video, it seems like they're firing at ~ 1,000 rounds per minute.

He called in Puff the Magic Dragon, AKA a C-130 gunship mounted with a 20mm Vulcan, 40mm Bofors and a *edit 105mm* Howitzer. He said the targets were only a hundred yards or so away when the Vulcan started singing, and as the plane flew overhead it rained 20mm casings down on them and their boat. A couple soldiers were injured by 200+mph shell casings (the shells not having enough time to decelerate to terminal velocity from the plane's 300ishmph velocity), and there were were dents and dings all over the boat afterward. He said it was needless to tell everyone to take what cover there was. I was a Vulcan gunner in the Army in the 80's, my Sgt Major was on one of the 5 M163 self propelled Vulcans that was sent to Vietnam, they used them for convoy escort where they had problems with supply convoys getting ambushed, they would put one at the front of the column and one at the back, he said that when they would cut loose with one it would turn the jungle into tossed salad, the rounds they're shooting here are TPT (target practice tracer), the one's used in combat are explosive, I guess attacks on the convoys in his sector dropped off immediately, he was already in country on Duster guns (twin 40MM Bofor's) when the Vulcans were sent there, he said they used the Duster's for perimeter defense at firebases, they would load one barrel with the self destruct air defense rounds and when Charlie would attack they'd cut loose with that barrel and wait for them to move their mortars up to just outside of where the rounds would self destruct, then they would cut loose with the other barrel that didn't have self destruct rounds and "turn 'em inside out".

And don't believe these idiots in the comments section about how much it costs firing one, I don't know where these idiots are getting their price per round from but none of them knows what they're talking about. Something else, this gun isn't running right, I can tell by the way it sounds it's firing slower than it should, they've got a problem with the power source or the drive motor or something.

@@zeroturn7091 Well that's incorrect, the faster they fire the cooler they run, when we'd live fire at night if you continuously fired an entire drum on the Lo No setting which was 1,000 rounds per minute when you were done the barrels would be glowing red, conversely if you fired an entire drum on 100 rd bust, which is 3,000 rounds per minute and let go of the trigger and pulled it again as fast as you could in between bursts when the drum was empty the barrels were hot but they wouldn't be glowing red, and that way would empty a drum of ammo in about 1/3 the time it took to do it on Lo No. The faster it fires the better it cools because it's circulating more air through the barrel cluster. I'd lay odds this thing has a weak power source, when we'd fire ours on the battery power you could tell it was firing slower than if the chassis' engine was running, and if the driver revved the engine you could tell the gun would fire even faster than if the chassis' engine was idling, even the 1.5 kilowatt generator that was for powering the system in a defensive position when you'd have the chassis shut down didn't seem to power the gun to where it would run as fast as if the engine was running, especially if the driver revved it up, those puppies would really hunt then.

It is kinda like spraying down with a fire hose. Solid Red stream. You can put one every square foot and the explosive projectile has a killing radius of two feet. The battle was on Jan 11, 1969. It was an ambush of a road sweep in preparation for a convoy on Hwy 13. Lt Harrold Fritz was awarded the Metal of Honor for his actions during that fight. Nothing is mentioned about the Vulcans though.. but their fire-power carried the day. PS. you need a freight train to carry enough ammo for them though... they really burn through the ammo..

Much more efficient was the tripod model towed behind a jeep. I could hump thousands of rounds linking them from ammo box to ammo box. Most fun was the fire selector switch set to no burst no limit. Just pull the trigger and and it fired as fast as it could till the ammo was gone! Just be careful not to melt the barrels! Don't ask me how I know this.(:

I was in Top Gun in 1974 for Plan captain training, and then deployed to Vietnam, with VF-1 on The Enterprise and we had 20mm Vulcans on the F-14's. I loved watching those thing fire; it sounded like a (really loud) fart as 50 rounds per second left the smoking gun barrels.
