Eddie Belfour was my favorite player as a little kid, as I grew up I followed the teams he got traded to. I begged my mom to get me the little Todd McFarland figurine of Belfour in net as a Dallas Star, the begging worked lol. Great video. Thanks for doing this one, brings back memories.
You know there have been a lot of great players when Shannon hasn't gotten to Belfour career vid until today
I always imagined his water bottle was filled with straight vodka 🤣
Requested a Eddie Belfour video a while back. This is perfect! Fantastic video 😁
His off-ice antics are the stuff of legend. Around 2000, he got busted for public intoxication and offered the cops a $1 billion bribe to let him go. It was front page news with a picture of him in handcuffs. He again got arrested for public intoxication a couple of years ago.
That he’s still the last goalie to get the Leafs past the first round is something.

9:00 His surliness was what made him so much more than anyone else, no one had the mystique that Eddie carried with him every game. No one ever fucked with Eddie, or suffer his wrath. Eddie is MAXWELLS DEMON of the atomic scale, rendered into NHL LEGEND. I spent a week in Toronto with Eddie his last summer with Chicago, I got there via introduction by none other than Vladislav Tretiak himself. Eddie is truly worthy of idol worship if ever there was someone. He would meet me after games when Chicago was in Los Angeles or Anaheim when he was with Chicago, San Jose and Dallas. He ALWAYS made time for me, a kid trying to play Junior A hockey in Manitoba, he was never anything but kind, sincere and he was the fucking best idol a 12 year old kid who needed a direction to follow to find. I fell in love with Eddie from all the hockey cards from 91-92 when he won every award as a rookie, then i recorded him on every ESPN game on VHS and replayed his games frame by frame to learn his “unorthodox” style. Unorthodox was a term I never heard before, but always heard with Eddie. For all the shit I hear people who do not know this man speak of him, I want to give my testimony here. This man literally changed my life. I just wanted to be like Eddie like other kids wanted to be like the other hero of the Chicago Stadium. I followed literally everything he did when he was on the ice and i replicated that so well that Vladislav Tretiak HIMSELF invited me to camp where Eddie was going to be training for the upcoming season. This experience taught me that truly anything was possible, that if you worked hard and believed in something, dare I say if you really loved something, that you could achieve whatever you set your mind to. I learned this because Eddie Belfour of Carman Manitoba was a demon on the ice and was so fucking unique he altered my life’s course. THANK YOU EDDIE, I LOVE YOU VERY MUCH FRIEND. BLESSINGS TO YOU SIR. The original acrobat who created a style which too many to count replicated as well. THE BEST.
Years ago my brother took me to a memorabilia show in Valley Forge PA. Belfour was supposed to be there signing but he had the flu so they got Jim Carey to fill in. I was mad then but now my autographed net detective rookie card is a grail to me. Not so much an Eddie story but if he didn't have the flu, It would be.

My all time favorite goalie/player. As a young goalie growing up in the 90s he was my idol. I was thrilled when he joined the Leafs.
Ed "The Eagle" Belfour # 17 NHL seasons - representing 5 NHL teams: Chicago Blackhawks (1988-97), San Jose Sharks (1997), Dallas Stars (1998-02), Toronto Maple Leafs (2002-06) & Florida Panthers (2006-07). # Stanley Cup champion: 1999 + 2 Finals: 1992 & 2000. # Olympic gold medalist: 2002. # Canada Cup gold medalist: 1991. # 2x Vezina Trophy (Best Goalie): 1991 & 1993. # 4x William M. Jennings Trophy (Least goales let in): 1991, 1993, 1995 & 1999. # Calder Memorial Trophy (Best rookie): 1991. # 2x NHL First All-Star Team select: 1991 & 1993. # NHL 2nd All-Star Team select: 1995. # 6x NHL All-Star Game player: 1992, 1993, 1996, 1998, 1999 & 2003. # NHL All-Rookie Team select: 1991. # Hockey Hall of Fame member: 2011. # Garry F. Longman Memorial Trophy (Rookie of the Year IHL): 1988. # IHL First All-Star Team select: 1988. # 5th goalie in NHL history with most wins (484) / Only 10 goalies have won 400+ games and only 3 have played 500+ games with 1 over 600+ games. # 5th goalie in NHL history with official games played (963) / Only 8 goalies have played 900+ games and only 3 have played 1000+ games. # 16th NHL goalie in NHL history to pass 300 career wins! NOTES: Belfour missed-out a lot of career oppertunities to compete with Team Canada for a IIHF World Championship gold medal. Never competed in any tournament despite having had oppertunities in; 1991, 1993, 1994, 1997, 2002, 2006 & 2007. And Team Canada managed to win the gold medal in 1994, 1997, 2004 & 2007 years = 4 missed chanses. Belfour had serious alcohol abuse problems he wrestled with a long time of his career. That is a big part of his lesser seasons and in his later seasons it got worse.
I’d like to point out that at the time of his retirement, he was third in wins overall and fourth in playoff wins overall. The goalies that have passed him and will pass him have had the benefit of getting shootout wins. If he was 50% in shootouts, you could tack another 62ish wins to his total.
When The Eagle is the last goalie to pull the Leafs into round 2, that really brings Toronto's slump into focus. Unreal!
He was certainly a great goalie. Loved his eagle masks.
His time in FLA was short, but he's still my favorite Cats goalie.
Still have my plushie Eddie the Eagle from way back in the day! Probably one of the fiestiest and most unique goalies to play the game. He loved to punch people lol
The EAGLE
Even with his solid playoff numbers, save %, he was questioned if he could ever take a team to the cup( he played on some very talented Chi teams), most of the criticism, I thought was unfair.....he did stumble at times in series, but really the team in front of him stumbled. I was happy when he won the cup, just because of the unfair criticism
He was a fun goalie to collect cards of since he was on so many teams

As a kid I hated Eddie because I was a Roy fan and Dallas kept beating Avs out of the playoffs. I appreciate The Eagle a ton now though.
Trading card wise, there was a point where Belfour's cards were so in demand that I traded his Upper Deck(I believe) rookie card straight up for a Topps Patrick Roy rookie. Not kidding. Both mint. It got a little "crazy", the demand for Eddie's cards early in his career. :)
John Marks, who played ten years for the Blackhawks, was an assistant Coach at UND and recommended the Hawks sign the undrafted Belfour.
My favorite goalie of all time. I even had a replica mask that I wore when playing street hockey. Great video.
I used to watch him at UND. Was my favorite player as a kid.
Lived in San Jose at the time Belfour was traded to San Jose. We we're so pumped to get him. ..... Then. He threw a tantrum like a child. I don't care if the cities not your first choice. You're getting payed to play the game you love to play and you don't even try and treat the team and fans with complete disrespect. Mike Vernon got sent to San Jose after winning a cup with Detroit. He was a the model of a champion. Champions behave as champions regardless of the outcome. Children behave like Belfour
Eddie, Eddie, Eddie!!!!
6:20 playing in San Jose at this time, was inside a building names “The Cow Palace” this was literally a former cattle auction house which was converted into an arena which was converted into an ice arena. I never saw a game there, I never saw the building, but I believe it was a TOTAL DUMP. I like how you include the All Star selections which is notable, and you do a great job with the annual trophy wins.
When I was a kid I really liked him in Toronto, but didn't know much about hockey. I hope he's doing better in his personal life, haven't heard much from him since the last time he was in the news for some negative stuff
Great Video of the Eagle. His contract was a bungle of Old Man Dollar Bill Wirtz.
Sioux Legend
Honestly my favorite NHLer of all time and I played wing my whole life. Love Eddie so much. My childhood hero growing up in Dallas. He is a legend in the city.
You can argue over Roy/Hasek/Brodeur being the best tender of all time, but the Eagle is comfortably a top 5, arguably top 4, which is pretty crazy when you consider how wild his career was. And he definitely has the stats and hardware to be considered for it. That he goes so under the radar in comparison to other goalies chafes me a little bit, because even if he isn't _the_ greatest, he's still one of the absolute greats.

I just remember the consistency in his play game in game out He rarely had an off game. It was annoying all he did early in his career and they still questioned whether he could win the big one. I think Belfour was an all time great goaltender. The only thing that sucks for him was that he played during the same era as Roy, Brodeur and Hasek. If he had played during a different time, there would be more talk of him being an all time great.
This guy is why I strapped the pads on, and who I modeled my game on....back in the day lol
I remember Ed from summer cruise nights I. Winnipeg, he had a really nice Hemi Cuda at one time. Being born south of the city he would come back in the summers.
Roy had a Habs logo on his mask then and it was seen as distinguishing enough that it got him his own Pro Set "The Mask" card.
I remember dad and I going to carman Manitoba to see Eddie and the cup. He never snowed up that day but have pics with the cup at least.
Eddie was incredible! 🦅
I Remember him in Toronto growing up dude was a wall
Technically, Ed was the 4th choice for the 2002 Olympic team. Patrick Roy refused to play citing his desire to rest and gear up for another Cup run (some think he refused the invite when they wouldn't guarantee him the starting job). But imagine those 4 guys being your top choices. All 4 are big game goalies too.
He was trash for the Leafs in the first month or so, the media and fans were flipping out but for some reason even though I hated him on Chicago you really felt he was going to figure it out and boy did he. Joseph was great obviously but when the convo comes up I will always say Belfour was the best Leaf goalie in my lifetime.

Eddie the Eagle!!!
LOL love the maple leafs first round jab
Belfour was one of those goalies who was wrapped a bit too tightly. After a game I was at in L.A. where the Kings had beaten the Blackhawks, after the game, players were slowly filtering out. Some signed autographs and some just got on the bus for the trip back to the hotel. Belfour came out through the Forum Club restaurant and bar, and he was three sheets to the wind, a beer in each hand. Forum security circled him as he went to the bus to prevent an incident with fans. Meanwhile, Jeremy Roenick stayed over half an hour, signing autographs, posing for pictures with fans, etc. Belfour had to be escorted to the team bus so he couldn't get into it with fans.
Started watch hockey about the time that he broke in. Favorite player when I was a kid.

Can you do a video on the Canadian national team. it was before my time and have a hard time finding information about it
The maniac from Manitoba lol. One of the greats, no doubt.
Often considered one of the best in history, can't argue he isn't and I also think he's a bit underrated by some. Was often up there with Roy and Hasek when play-offs came around, very hard to solve in key games. I think you can make the argument he was as good as Brodeur, some people would strongly disagree but I think many of those pointing at Brodeurs body of work actually has a bit of a dislike of Belfour caused by his stuff off the ice. Me too admittedly, as Roy, Hasek and Eddie seems to often be big aholes and egos. I know it's a video about EB but you can't really talk about these 4 guys without mentioning the others. It was a blessing to have some of the best goalies ever playing at the same time.

he went to North Dakota for college
He probably would’ve kept playing if not for those recurring back issues that plagued his last two seasons.
15:17 Keenan’s System LOL this is HILARIOUS! KEENAN plays MIND KONTROL games with his players, he pushes buttons and somehow, Eddie got through this. This was no system, hockey coaches are EGO-MANIACS. Eddie is like a samurai, he’s calm and focused, playing a game with set rules of conduct. When you take shots at his head after the whistle when he’s relaxed, you get close-lined like Cliff Ronning, when your coach is acting like dick and pushing your buttons, he does it to make you blow your lid. For too long this mentality has been used by one man to try and control another, my True Friend Ed Belfour taught me by example how to deal with punks. Patrick Roy never pulled any of his bullshit when Eddie was opposite him, NO ONE FUCKED WITH THE EAGLE 🦅
Long live the eagle
5:00 I think it’s a mistake not to include the GAA in all these stats. Generally, the GAA was the FIRST metric to determine, how many goals on average does he give up, over 3 and the team isn’t going to be in the playoffs long. You have to account for GAA, the fact that your board omits this is a disservice, it’s the PRIMARY metric, regardless of what you think or how you rationalize it, you have not even included it. That’s an error.
