Ha ha. Though Americans have generally a fun reaction to salty licorice the most extreme one is actually from a french guy. A friend of mine worked in an international office (I don't remember what country) where people from various nationalities worked. They all put candy and snacks from their homecountries on a communal table in the break room for everyone to eat from during the work day. My friend, being swedish, put a small bowl of 'djungelvrål' among the other candy and snacks. Later she heard an enraged howl from the break room where a french guy had apparently grabbed a few and chomped down... he was not amused and demanded it be removed. To him, salt on candy was equal to child abuse.

Salty licorice is quite popular in Sweden and Finland, I like it a lot. The ultimate power move is tricking foreigners into trying Tyrkisk Peber(turkisk peppar/turkish pepper) lol. You get both the ammonium chloride and spice, they taste pretty much like a punch to the face even when you like them. Läkerol is something you'd usually have to clear up your airways if you're a bit stuffy, or to counter bad breath. They're basically candy cough drops, which is why you usually don't down the entire bag at once(some of them are really delicious though, hard to stay away lol).

It depends upon the American. Our pallets are diverse as we have a HUGE country and many many subcultures within it. The food you get down South is not the same as NY and NY food isn't the same as Boston. These guys featured are from the Midwest. You can get alligator meat in Florida and grits, and up north you get beans and hash browns. Pizza in Chicago is deep dish like in a pastry shell while NY style pizza is on a thin flatbread.

I did love salty (salmiak) licorice already as a kid! You need to be a bit careful with it, though. Too much is really unhealthy for you. Licorice gives you high blood pressure, and the salt is kind of corrosive for your teeth and gum. The YUP ones are sugar free and from a classic "throat candy" company, and not my first choice for salty licorice candy. I do enjoy them too, though. The Dumle company, Fazer, is actually Finnish, but it's a popular brand and they sell a lot in Sweden. I LOVE the Hockey Puck candy (salmiak powder!). I think it's supposed to be eaten as you did with the finger, but when I buy it (as a grown up) I use a tea spoon. 😅

🤣😂🤣Love it!! Really interesting! The hockey-puck came out when i was a kid, somewhere in the 80 ´s. Eather you pour it in your hand and then into your mouth - or you simply dip your tongue in there...🙂Have not tried the Yup, so I can´t say but oh yeah, we love the salt - and the licorice! Thanks for your honest thoughts guys!

What about surstromming? I heard quite a bit about it. I heard it is a preservative for fish and it smells really really awful. Have you ever tried it? How salty is it?

  • @andersgranstrom7128

@@oldgordo61 It smells like crap, for sure! But if you put it on a hard thin bread (here in Sweden called tunnbröd), with potatoes and garlic + sourcreme...it is not all that bad! .-D I have only tried once or twice - but some parts of my family was obsessed with it! You should not just eat the fish itself... If you´re not the kind a person that likes to punish yourself! 😂🤣

People tasting different candies never gets old! 😁 I love watching the reactions, especially if it's stuff you know yourself. 😆 Some years ago I sent a box full of Swedish candy and Christmas related foodstuff to a friend in Japan and her family. It was a blast hearing about them tasting it. Dillchips and ginger cookies are their new favorites but the salty licorice didn't go down well as expected.

I'm from Sweden. There was a few I never had, and cant' say they are common. Kexchoklad is very common, but that's a thing between candy and a snack. Daim is great, but I enjoy darker chocolates now when I'm older. Läckerol to me is mostly for a fresh feel in my mouth, like a breath mint. That YUP though with salt sounds out of wack, and not interesting. My favorite potato chips is chili cheese. I prefer chocolate between 40 and 85%.

Yes, we LOVE salty liquorice! The saltier, the tastier :D To us, it's not salty as it is for you. We're so used to the taste so it's both sweet and salty to us, but I can understand the reaction tasting it for the first time. :)

Hazelnut in EU became popular because in ww2 the ability to get coco plants for chocolate was scarce and to compensate they add hazelnut paste that is close. This was also done in the USA to a lesser degree and GIs would give them to kids for PR .

That was funny. There's a KZread channel of a New Zealand family that taste American foods that are sent to them from Americans who watch the show and they rate them too. Shows how different cultures can have different palates. All in good fun.

Hey, look at that. You are finally back in my recommendations. Oh, and from just reading the title: No, we are not weird. Your faces are weird! Our candy is amazing, or else! Update1 Talking about food like that is a proper dad-move. Update2 These guys are fun to watch. Update3 Hockeypuck on drink rims. I feel I should have thought of that years ago. Imma gonna steal that. Update4 Läckerol is horrible. Only real men eat it, because there is nothing else that frightens them in life. So, only old men. You need to have your senses dulled not to spit it out. Good video. 9.4

Djungelvrål is life. You should try it. The "salt" is nitric acid and amonia. When you boil away the water, that's what's left. I did that "salt" in chemestry class.
