The Gullah People Remember Their Enslaved Ancestors (2002)

Gullah Island (2002) - The Sea Islands, off the Carolina and Georgia coasts, are home to a people known as “The Gullah”, descendants of former slaves from Africa.
Subscribe to Journeyman here: kzread.info_c...
Queen Quet is spokesman for the Gullah people. She has returned to her roots on the Sea Islands to reinvigorate and protect the Gullah traditions in music, food, language and spirituality. "The world has been very effective at burying African culture of any sort and of eliminating thoughts of slavery," says Quet. Thousands of Gullah descend on the islands every year, journeying back to the old plantations that their ancestors won from their masters in the civil war, 140 years ago. But real estate agents are rearing their ugly heads, and the Gullah way of life is under threat due to a plague of golf courses and gated communities.

I agree with the gentleman who said the island was their birthright. Their ancestors died in the fields there; the land should rightfully be theirs, without fear of getting “taxed out” of their properties.

Gives me chills to see that ocean and listen to her speak of how the slaves ships sat out in the water and they would unload our ancestors onto smaller flat bottomed boats. It makes it more real to me. Heartbreaking but it is our history. We are the ancestors of the strong survivors of chattel slavery and I'm proud of my people. Hurt and angry that this happened to them, but proud nonetheless.

To my Gullah/Geechees... The name Gullah is in the Strong's Bible dictionary as a Hebrew name on the Hebrew section 1353 (Please look this up for yourselves) . Yah'll (we) are Hebrews. Our names were not mis-pronounced as Angola or Golas although some of our ancestors were from there. Geechees are the Yamasee or Yahmassee (Yah) (Yahweh) who were also Hebrews (Maroons, Guale, Yamacraw, Creek Aborigines) Cum-by-Yah, Ah-ha-Yah, We-Ben-Yah (We Son of Yah), Hallelu-Yah

Searching for a genuine background for their Porgy & Bess in 1934, the Gershwin brothers spent 2 wks on a small island, 10 mi. From Charleston: for the rhythm & music of the simple Gullah peasants there. “Their complicated pattern of a rhythm beaten out by feet and hands-their “shout”, a source of pride. I’ll never forget a night when George joined in, and to their huge delight, stole the show from their champion “shouter”. I think he was the only white man who could have done it.” DuBois Heyward (fr. Kimball & Simon. The Gershwins (1973), p 174. (Thank you for letting me see this, for myself.) [Now in 12 Amer. Spirituals for Harp/Piano fr. HTBurleigh: On line by Lyon&Healy, 2020.]

I love their culture but they need to make sure they don’t tell every child that our ancestors was from Africa or slaves. Only about 10-15% of melanated people were brung from Africa to America. That wight man story dat we was all in Africa is a lie. We were always here and it’s so much proof we been here. Our land got took from us. The original people (so call black people) indigenous to the whole world. The word slave comes from da word slavic which were white slaves. Black people had white slaves (slavs) in America way before Christopher Columbus. Check out books like the sultan of America - the Moroccan treaties with various European crowns. My ancestors are Cherokee and creek.
