He sounds like no one else. But it's not merely that voice. It's the whole soundscape he has constructed around his characters, with the help of many outrageously original musicians.
This week I'm digging deep into the history of Tom's recording and touring careers in an attempt to fathom where he found such wonderful, quirky, genre-defying artists with whom to create albums the likes of which we've never heard!
Join me as I learn about:
Shep Cooke
Peter Klimes
Ray Crawford
Roland Bautista
Alvin Shine Robinson
Fred Tackett
Carlos Guitarlos
Marc Ribot
Chris Spedding
Keith Richards
Robert Quine
G.E. Smith
Morris Tepper
David Phillips
Larry Taylor
Joe Gore
Smokey Hormel
Larry LaLonde
Myles Boisin
Harry K Cody
And of course, Tom himself!

I’m a drummer but Ribot is one of my favorite musicians. Love him with Waits but also with the Lounge Lizards, Electric Masada (or any John Zorn collab), and his own Cubanos Postizos. I believe he’s also left handed but plays right handed guitar. Great video!

Thanks for that feedback! Yeah, I loved learning that one.
Among the many things one could say about Waits, and about his guitars, is that often the electric ones come in too loud or too saturated. It's a clever, unsettling little attention grab. Cold Water and the solo on Falling Down are examples. But actually, I really like Tom's own playing. His fragmented acoustic is beautiful, and that damped rhythm thing he does on Cold Cold Ground or Hold On is gripping but also moving. For someone who's not seen as a guitarist, those are two real signature sounds. Great video, thanks!
@dannyeddyguitar

Yes! Totally agree about Tom's playing - which I'll talk some more about in chapter 2. He has such an amazing feel when he plays. His rhythm parts look like nothing on the page. But when you hear him play it... Wow!
Thanks, these guys represent my favorite guitar styles and tones. I was lucky to have played with Marc Ribot back in the day and consider him a lifelong friend.

Wait! You... you... PLAYED WITH MARC RIBOT?!! Tell me more!
Great video! I get the distinct feeling that all other guitar-centric YTers (except Eric Haugen) haven’t even heard of Tom Waits despite the fact he’s one of the all-time favourites of almost every musician/music fan I know. He’s weird like that. He’s music aristocracy of the level of Dylan or the Beatles for anyone with alternative/experimental/intellectual tastes, but a non-entity to the rest of the population. Thanks for spreading the word!

Thank you for the tremendous diligence given to such a worthy subject, really appreciated the obvious care and effort you put into this - by about a minute in you had a new subscriber. As big of a fan of the incomparable Mr. Waits, I hadn't quite fathomed what a formidable list of stellar guitarists have graced his work. I had the honor of working with Fred Tackett (and L.F. drummer & founding member Richie Hayward, may he rest in peace,) on a short-lived band, knew of and was truly humbled by their myriad achievements, but I'd forgotten that Fred had played on Swordfish...! On the Mark Ribot tip, I'd like to add my strong encouragement for the uninitiated to give the 1st Los Cubanos Postizos album a listen and prepare to be schooled in taste, touch and tone.

I was at Bumbershoot many many years ago and heard someone playing like Marc Ribot on one of the stages. I walked over to a crowd of about 30 people. The guitarist on stage was sitting on a metal folding chair all but hugging this hollow body guitar shredding this super angular punk rock solo with a crazy Latin feel. I got to the front of the stage as the band started playing Postizo and I realized who the maestro was before me. It was one of the greatest moments in my life. Marc Ribot and his band completely sold me on everything the dude has ever made that day. It was amazing

I've just discovered your channel. right now. I'm a big fan of Waits but even more of Marc Ribot. He is one of the most avant garde guitar players out there. Any of his projects is amazing from playing in these records with Tom Waits or his solo performances in art galleries, his funny named bands and of course what for me is more significant thing, his work with who, in my humble opinion is the most important musician/composer today and one of the most important of the XX Century, The one and only John Zorn. Truly a giant and a musical genius. I love your playing Danny, as a guitar player myself I find you have a beautiful touch and funny enough you have a The Paul, one of the most stranger Lesters ever made, probably from 1974 or so and also you play P90's which I have on my SG and I really adore for their amazing tone. I just want to let you know that you have a new fan and subscriber from Ciudad Rodrigo, a little town in West Spain, close to Portugal, however I know NYC or Dublin in Ireland after living there for many years. Congratulations again and keep on the great work!!❤

excellent vid, man. I got to see Marc Ribot, solo, in Boston,MA, 27 years ago. He opened with Beefheart/Magic Band song b4 launching into an amazing setlist of originals/covers. This 'stabbing' guitar-style - angular, chunky,-yet-spider-y, & a looseness that is also very *deliberate* has a name/genre ... 'POST-BEEFHEART'. As you've shown, some C&MB alums are right there alive and adding wobble and thump. I believe that the style lopes and - so long as the melody is 'chased' and the guitar functions as much as a drum as a stringed "frontal'/'rock' ingredient - it will be engrossing. Thx again.
