I bought this mouthpiece as a newcomer to the saxophone world. Most videos tell beginners not to buy a expensive mouthpiece until we are more experienced. I decided to get the JA5 model so I could take advantage of the smaller tip opening that is more forgiving while I learn. I really love it! I initially bought a Yamaha 4C as a backup in case I couldn’t use the GS yet but the Yamaha just sit in my nightstand. Even as a beginner I can definitely tell a big difference in the two mouthpieces

Alright, Wally: a tenor-centric video! Another great one...thanks! It’s funny; there was a post on Sax on The Web forums regarding this mouthpiece just the other day. I’ve also seen a post where a custom piece maker (maybe Aaron Drake?) was given Stan Getz’s mouthpiece by Getz’s daughter. The mouthpiece guru reproduced it, with Getz’s tooth-marks and all. I can’t seem to find it online, however. I’m not into vintage, but I’m quite excited about a Phil-Tone Intrepid for tenor (.105 tip opening) that I’ve got coming that will replace my old Bob Ackerman .108 mouthpiece. I’ll let you know how it sounds once it arrives. If the alto counterpart is any indication, I’m sure it’s going to be great! Thanks again for the video; please keep them coming!

Hey Doc, not to get off subject, but If you were in the market for a new tenor (no budgetary constraints) what would it be? Thanks for your consideration.

Yamaha 82Z without high F# key. I doubt the extra tone hole makes much of a difference, but I'd always wonder if I bought the normal one! Personally, I like the gold lacquer version. That said, I've owned the Yamaha 62 tenor (seen in this video) since 1999. Nothing I've played has made me want to upgrade. On the vintage side, I'd be tempted to try an old "cigar cutter" Selmer. Zoot played one, I've always loved Zoot! What about you? What are you looking at Dennis?

Hi Dr Wally. Mouthpieces, what an unusual topic. Love the video. Are you familiar with Lance Burton's notion of mouthpiece matching? And have you ever heard of Anton Wienberg mouthpieces and his 'second chamber' concept? If not, I think you'd be intrigued. BTW I'm not Lance or Anton and I have no connection to either.

Never heard of either, but I'm honestly very content with Adolph Sax's original "single" chamber design!

@@drwallysax Ok, but you won't be if you try one with a second chamber. Its not as drastic as it sounds and its been done on other makes too, Larsen I think. Its a shallow hollowing out - a scoop, about a one third of an inch long across the baffle a little way from the tip. I was given one to try and it was very similar to a Meyer which I have, but (and this is the thing) , the sound was surprisingly wide and 'Phil Woods' like. I couldn't get my own as Anton is retired and there's no second chamber examples left.He was an astonishing good clarinetist, and repairer, and his designs (but not the second chamber type) are now marketed under the Windcraft name in the UK. If you're interested enough theres some stuff on the web showing it and a downloadable book Anton wrote about mouthpiece design. I tried to interest SYOS into researching it but I can't afford to pay them to do it. I spoke to a mouthpiece maker here in UK Eddie Pillinger and he did know of it and understood the physics. I play Lakeys 7*3 now on alto and I wanted him to maybe modify one with that scoop in the baffle but again, its resources, (money). But maybe this is something the 3D makers you know would be interested in exploring. Lance's Mouthpiece matching is something else. Which if you'd like I'd explain maybe elsewhere. But it too is something mp makers might explore. And since first posting this I came across a video of Anton himself, I bet you didn't know this!!! kzread.info/dash/bejne/X6Gly5Nwdsm7qZc.html Turns out we have the organ builders to blame!! www.saxontheweb.net/threads/weinberg-emanon-double-chamber-double-baffle-mouthpiece.151342/ This has a post with some good photos of the mp and its scoop.

I have tried three SYOS mouthpieces and I'm not very satisfied with the finishing quality and they didn't seal very well. Sound and response was good, but ultimately, I did not like the feel of the synthetic material.

Great channel Dr Wallace, but I do feel you're being a bit unfair to SYOS! I have a tenor mouthpiece made by them and I love it,and honestly, the material it's made of really makes no difference to how it plays, and I'm sure that all the pro players who use them wouldn't do so unless they were good enough to do the Job.

Hey Ian! I agree material has very little effect on sound, it's the quality of printing and finishing I pointed out. My big issue is the price. It's a couple dollars worth of plastic filament and with rough edges. Never said they sounded bad, but should they really cost $200? As for the pros that play them? Ask them how much they make in affiliate sales. You might be surprised by the answer. But, promise I'll do a fair review if I get my hands on one.

Saxophone Academy thanks for reply Dr Wallace I can only speak from my own experience, my mouthpiece doesn’t have any rough edges on it and I’d say that the overall finish is pretty smooth, I realise that the artist probably do ok financially but there is plenty of evidence out there that shows they do use them on gigs etc.but I do agree that price with all sax related things can be eye watering ‘'twas ever thus I guess, please don’t think I was casting doubt on your integrity, I respect your views and opinion and in the fifty+years that I’ve been playing,I’ve learned that you’re never too old to learn, and I’ve learned and been entertained by your videos thank you

I think we're on the same page, I agree that many pros sound fantastic on them. I also believe they genuinely love the mouthpiece. My issue is really only the price. You and I are old enough to remember Amway, and to my understanding, a lot of the price of SYOS goes to affiliate marketing. Then again, is that much different than price markup from distributor to retailer with traditional brands? I'm not fully decided. But, if at the end of the day it sounds good and the player loves it, that's ALL that matters. Thanks for the kind words, I hope you have a great weekend!
