As a writer, I tell anyone who will listen to me that The Green Mile is the pinnacle, the very zenith of storytelling. There is not a single extraneous thing in the original novel by Stephen King or the brilliant screenplay adaptation by Frank Darabont. Every little bit of it serves to move the story forward, there is not one iota of fluff or exposition. If you're looking for an absolute shining example of what ensemble work can achieve, this is your movie.

This is from a fan please read till the end: I live in Montreal Canada. For those who don't know Montreal is somewhat of a movie Central many big name productions are filmed here. I have been lucky to have seen many American actors in and around Montreal. That being said my luck changed the day I met MR. Michael Clark Duncan in the summer of 99'. Ironically it was in a gym...... can't imagine why..... lol. We actually briefly worked out together which was cool. But the best part was when we sat and had a protein shake together after the workout. At that point I only though I was talking with a very very big black dude.... Lol. Little did I know who he was and more so who he was going to go on to become. I asked him if he was new around because I had never seen him before. That is when he told me that he was an amerian actor from California here filming a movie with BRUCE WILLIS which turned out to be THE HOLE NINE YARDS somewhat of a comedy released in 00' (if you can imagine BRUCE WILLIS in a comedy) that being said he told me he was in Armageddon (again with Bruce Willis) which sounded strange to me only because even if released in 98' I hadn't seen it yet which makes perfect sense. The conversation quickly came back to the hear and now and The Green Mile. Even if he only had three movies under his belt ( at this point more like two and a half) The Green Mile was is favorite. The way he spoke about it and the challenges he felt he had to overcome ( given the emotional intensity of the scenes) and also as a relatively new actor especially opposite none other than TOM HANKS were great. You could see in his eyes and hear in his voice the passion he had for the art and more so for this movie. This went on for about half an hour and that was it. But you could tell that it was going to be special and he (it) would not disappoint. In my option even given the ensemble cast it was greatly through his performance that the story came to life. Needless to say I did see all of his work ( always reminding meself of that day we met) and up till his passing in 2012 nothing came close to THE GREEN MILE. I remember as i sat in the theater watching on a special new state of the art screen one thing kept coming back to mind and that was that I (a simple everyday Joe) had the privilege and the honor to not only have met and shakin his hand but actually have sat and spoken for a half hour to this man who everone in the theatre now admired for his talent and performance and I couldn't tell anyone about my personal experience. That is why (even after having said what I said here every chance I got excluding the time at the theater ) I am here after all these years sharing my story with you on you tube. So it has come to this from a fan of MR. MCD I say you are and will always be missed. THANK YOU and RIP. 😔

It's such an amazing movie, it just has no flaws. All the actors were just at the top of their game, script was perfect, cinematography and direction were outstanding, the pace was bravely slow so it drew you in, the music complemented the scenes so well and added emotion etc etc. I just can't praise it enough. It surely will continue to be a piece of work that is increasingly appreciated as time goes by.

I gotta tell you that it is incredibly moving. But for me it's the part near the end when they go visit old grey Mr. Jingles. That part for me makes me teary eyed every time. So touching. I don't think I can adequately put into words how amazing this film is.

It's terrible thing when someone you know or love dies but there is something truly special when a person comes along who you never met and only know of by a movie they acted in, affects you almost the same when they die. That's how Michael Clarke Duncan's death affected me. When a man acts a part as well as he acted John Coffey, much of his very being goes into the part, he was John Coffey and John's death was a terrible blow with a feeling of great loss, as is Michael Clarke Duncan's passing. All the actors in the Green Mile did a brilliant job and I thank them for leaving us with such a masterpiece.

I remember seeing this movie for the first time wondering who Michael Clarke Duncan was and where they found this gentle giant to play such a huge role. What an outstanding job he did holding his own talent with some of the best actors in the business!

I saw The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile back to back. I noticed that some parts of the sets were reused (the room/ceiling bars where Brooks in Shawshank hangs himself was also in one of the houses in Green Mile). I love these two movies and watch them every few years or so. I wish the director will make another emotional ride as these movies. I like The Majestic as well, but not nearly as much

Jay30k I was just about to write about both the movies you’ve mentioned. To me personally both movies are on the exact same level for prison based movies but for different storylines! These two are my all time favourite prison based movies, both with fantastic casting for every character that you can’t fault them. And I haven’t seen and don’t think I ever will see anymore prison based movies that are so faultless. No director will ever be able to create movies like these two ever again. That’s just my personal opinion and I don’t cry at sad movies but these two have me balling every time I watch them.

This, in my opinion was a great production with some of the best actors. First being Tom Hanks who has been great in every movie he has been in but Michael Clarke Duncan's portrayal was magnificent. I will remember Mike best for this movie. I don't believe anyone else could have played the part of John Coffey better than Mike. Thanks Bruce Willis, your'e the best. I must add that the part that Doug Hutchinson played, "Percy" was the best part he has ever and will ever play. You know that when, in this film, that you loved to hate this guy. The compilation of actors in this film was fantastic. The emotion the professionalism that all these dedicated actors put into it was compelling. Best movie ever.

The books came out in installments and I waited impatiently for the next to appear. i was a Stephen King, sure, but this was unlike anything I had read of his before. When the movie came out, I stood in line to get in and came out a changed person. A fantastic, almost unique film with excellent acting and Michael Duncan whose broad shoulders carried this film over the finish line.
