It would be hard to take Will Smith seriously in a movie like Matrix given most people see him as a comedian from the Fresh Prince. A loner computer geek questioning the meaning of life is a bit hard to imagine for someone who was "born and raised in West Philadelphia"

I agree. Although he is currently the John Wick of our current generation of action movies, you can't have better actor playing Neo as Keanu Reeves. Hollywood kept doing remakes and reboots because they're run out of creative ideas and film concept.

I would go as far as saying this is probably the last sic-fi/action film that really makes use of CGI to an incredible effect without over-doing it. Timeless film, absolute classic, fantastic phrases, legendary actors, insane plot. I'm proud of being a 90s baby; when technology was about but not overused.

Everything about the digital age was In a perfect place In 1999 , even the Internet and social media with stuff like AOL was perfectly limited , ppl had just enough capability without becoming obsessed with an oversaturation of Information , ppl also didn't have to deal wih censorship or Invasion of privacy. I was there opening night and The Matrix was the last truly groundbreaking use of CG I ever saw , every other movie I can think of In the 2000's didn't do anything significantly new , not The Dark Knight or any of other hyped film of that era. 1999 was the last pure golden age year for society In general before things spun out of control and we started becoming slaves to technology and losing our humanity.

THIS is what happens when you and your team are full 100% passionate about a film you're making with them. The result: A masterpiece.

I really feel sorry for everybody who couldn't experience the matrix back then. At that time i was 12 and naturally movies were my life. There was only 1 immersive action game that was telling any story by that time and it was Half-Life. So if you wanted to experience a full on packed action, you had to resolve to movies. So we had masterpieces like Die Hard 3, Speed, Bad Boys and then we had something the world had never seen - The Matrix. The tone, the script, the action and the effects were nothing anybody had ever heard of. Yeah T2 Judgement Day showed us what WOULD happen if we let loose the AI, but The Matrix was showing how it was already happening. It;s hard to make something so fantastical like a bullet-dodging effects and at the same time having some logic to it (like if you're in a simulation program, you can use your mind and let it be the only limit of what you're capable of).

You could argue the Wachowskis failed at that, because their vision was undermined by the executives. Originally, the enslaved humans were meant to serve as processing power for the machines, which goes some way to explaining why they would expend resources to keep them around. The execs thought audiences wouldn't understand that, so the purpose of the slaves was changed to energy generation. This makes no sense at all, as the only energy input to the slaves is their ancestors' remains, so conservation of energy would have to be violated to sustain the slaves, never mind generate additional useful energy.

I feel like it's a little self explanatory. To me, that's kind of like saying "They spent a lot of this video talking about how DNA gets transcribed and translated into proteins, but they don't really talk about the Central Dogma of cells very much".

Almost 20 years later this movie still holds up or is ahead of stuff in theaters today

Unprecedented yes, but not all that original, there are a lot of borrowed themes and ideas...just executed so much better than many and one of most focused sci fi movies of the past few decades using those combined sources of inspiration.

~ i agree and im a kubrickite:) but all film makers must learn from the lessons of others, the mistakes and the successes, else when someone makes something good all we get from some others is just a copy of what went before. but its hard to capture lightning in a bottle, which is what a good film is - many elements coming together to combine and create something brilliant, a new perspective on an old scene - which is what those two siblings did with the first matrix film . . .

In 1999, this movie...blew us away. There was nothing like it at the time. A rare movie that you could watch several times and be interested. It was a film study course in itself. The special effects and style of the film influenced many later films like Equilibrium and Underworld.

This was the best of the series, all the actors were casted perfectly. Was a great balance of real life action, great cinematography and special effects and great story. They looked like they had a lot of fun working on this, once on a life time chance to be in such an iconic movie.

this movie doesn't look like a movie made in 1999 when I watched it for the first time I thought it came out in 2010 or something hard to believe this movie is as old as me

9:59 - 11:29 As a comic artist/illustrator, I have ALWAYS gotten off on this portion of the doc. I remember rewinding this constantly to try and soak up this information when I first got the DVD way back when. Plus Steve Skroce is one of my favorite comic artists for his work on the Matrix and absolutely outside of it!

Every actor and director made this film a masterpiece not just Keanu.

The Matrix is a masterpiece, one of the finest works of art ever in my opinion.

ln my humble opinion the second movie is better than the first. The fights were bigger, the philosophy got flipped on its head and they set it up well for the third movie. The second movie was a bridge that connected the first and last movie by going upside down lol

The older I get and the more films I watch it becomes obvious how rare gems like this truly are. Probably 3 or 4 thousand times the budget of the Matrix has been spent in the interim, yet it's still largely peerless save a few exceptions that can be counted on one hand

if you check out the 1995 shooting script, the word BAR appears exactly twice in the script, that's just one of a hundred examples I could give you, no joke, this movie was written by God to describe Himself living in the world, just like the movie depicts Neo.

I can't believe that Fishburne and Reeves did that helicopter catching thing by doing a bungey jump aswell! The height of that thing made me want to throw up. You could have all the safety equipment you like, but there is no way on earth I would do anything like that. Mind you, I get dizzy standing on a chair, and I don't like really high bridges either. Most heights make me feel nauseous actually. So hats off to them for doing that. Crazy bastards!

and to think these visionaries went bat shit crazy years later...

Hard to believe that its almost 20 years since this film came out and out of the trilogy, this film to me was the best .

I went to watch this film at midnight in a local theater. The place was packed. Twenty minutes in, and a strange herbal smell began to drift through the auditorium from the back seats. The dope heads were later ejected from the theater, largely because they had been talking too much. This is a trippy film. Never having indulged, I can't imagine what it's like watching it when you're high.

Matrix is my all time favorite film. This somehow made it even better

A milestone in the history of movie making. Its significance is unquestionable.

This is the best film ever. I've never been a fan of cyberpunk or sci-fi but this movie simply blew my mind. Every phrase. Every Camera Angle. Every action is just brilliantly thought out by the Wachowskis. No other film has so much coolness in such a short space of time. It epitomised the 90s and was the last proper action film before the millennium where everything became a CGI fest. The philosophical approach combined with tons of insane action shots is simply perfection. Rightly so did Keanu donate 75 of his 80 million dollar salary from the trilogy to the film crew because they deserve so much credit. I was only 2 when this film was released, I really wish I could have been a bit older to absorb the hype that surrounded this film. There is something truly unique about this film; maybe it was the inclusion of kung fu that was never seen before. Whatever it was, the Wachowskis knew exactly what they wanted.

When it came out, there was a big mystery surrounding it. They kept saying "If you want to know what the Matrix is, you have to see it for yourself." I was working at a record store and a guy came in the store one night selling a bunch of different bootleg movie vhs tapes. I bought the Matrix. When I played it at my apartment, It wasn't a good quality tape, but the low quality of the bootleg, somehow made the movie that more mysterious and cool. It's hard to explain. Lol

Together with Back to the Future, this is my most favorite movie of all time. I must have seen this at least 25 times and each time it's still good. I was mindblown, the first time I saw this. The doc. focuses on the innovative camerawork, stunts and special effects, but for me The Matrix is all about the concept and the way it is brought to the audience. And if I'm really honest, this movie plays a big part in my own search for freedom in life. The question: "who am I without my thoughts and concepts?" is directly connected with this movie. For that matter, it's more than just a movie. It's also a genuine piece of art that makes you see yourself and life in a different way. Thnx for this documentary!

And now we know why The Matrix was a once in a decade masterpiece and Matrix 4 was a piece of shit.

Exactly. I went into the theatre not actually knowing what the matrix was. When Neo is trying to find out what it is we're just a curious as he is. These days even if you try to avoid spoilers, the trailer itself will spoil it for you.

Matrix is such a great movie. I remember watching this as a 9y/o. Watching it today and Im still in love. Its just amazing

I wish ‘making of’ videos included more off-camera footage shot during production. They used to be more interesting. This one is a welcome exception.

Keanu Reeves as Neo: A computer programmer, born Thomas A. Anderson, who secretly operates as a hacker named Neo. Reeves described his character as someone who felt that something was wrong, and was searching for Morpheus and the truth to break free. Will Smith turned down the role of Neo to make Wild Wild West, because of skepticism over the film's ambitious bullet time special effects. He later stated he was "not mature enough as an actor" at that time, and that if given the role, he "would have messed it up". Smith praised Reeves for his portrayal. Nicolas Cage also turned down the part because of "family obligations". Warner Bros. sought Brad Pitt or Val Kilmer for the role. When both declined, Leonardo DiCaprio initially accepted the role, but ultimately turned it down because he did not want to do a visual effects film directly after Titanic. The studio pushed for Reeves, who won the role over Johnny Depp, the Wachowskis' first choice. Lorenzo di Bonaventura stated that the screenplay was also sent to Sandra Bullock, with the suggestion of rewriting Neo as a female Laurence Fishburne as Morpheus: A human freed from the Matrix and captain of the Nebuchadnezzar. He wanted Smith to sound neither robotic nor human, and also said that the Wachowskis' voices had influenced his voice in the film. When filming began, Weaving mentioned that he was excited to be a part of something that would extend him. Jean Reno was offered the role, but declined, unwilling to move to Australia for the production. Joe Pantoliano as Cypher: Another human freed by Morpheus, and a crewmember of the Nebuchadnezzar, but one who regrets taking the red pill and seeks to be returned to the Matrix, later betraying the rebels to Agent Smith. Pantoliano had worked with the Wachowskis prior to appearing in The Matrix, starring in their 1996 film Bound. Marcus Chong as Tank: The "operator" of the Nebuchadnezzar and Dozer's brother; they are both "natural" (as opposed to bred) humans, born outside of the Matrix. Anthony Ray Parker as Dozer: Pilot of the Nebuchadnezzar. He is Tank's brother, and like him was born outside of the Matrix. wow I'm so happy to see this! The Matrix Trilogy was one of its kind!!

Hgo Weaving has made himself eternal as THE agent Smith. I think almost everybody would instantly recognize him. So If I was him, I would have some fun every now and then, dressing up with the black suit and the black glasses, put on a serious face and walk the streets. When somebody talks to me or gets into fan-mode, just giving them a short emotionless look and go on walking, like being the actual agent Smith. And when they are kinda upset about me sort of ignoring them, few steps later just turning around with a smile, that could still be agent Smith. =D You know, Arnie did such things in the whole Terminator-attire. I think, those are the fun sides of being a well known actor.

Does anyone know the origin of the first music track that is played in this? I searched up the entire OST of about over 100 tracks, and did not find it. It's quite the obscure track and has been a real trouble to hunt down for.

+crapObear2323 No course Im not bullshitting - LOL - why would I BS about that. If I was going to BS I would say Im Hugo Weaving or Keannu Reeves and go all the way ! Anyway yeah had a great time and did meet Keanu Reeves and Hugo Weaving. Keanu came up to me and asked me and a girl I was working with if Id like to go down in the lifts with him after the days shooting. When we came out there were all these paparazzi around us and I was walking out with Keannu. Was an awesome experience.

I have it on the trilogy bluerays, I don't know if there is a way to see it somewhere else (DVD's ?). There is around 2-3h of making-of on each disk, sorted by scenes if I remember right, and it is very, very interesting !

One of thr best lines. Smith, "...you help your neighbor take our her GARBAGE...' The way he says that line is absolutely amazing, like taking out the garbage for someone is something only the lowest most treasonous inhuman scum would do!

I love the matrix movies. Favourite trilogy of all time, and I can't wait for the matrix resurrection. ❤️

Iv watched this film at least 80 times and only recently understood it and it’s brilliant what a concept!! I find it a lot easier to think of our existence as a kind of matrix like world than to think about why were here where did we come from, what was before the universe, what’s outside the universe and what’s outside of that you could just go on and on... matrix is a lot easier to believe and maybe not so fictional after all.

Imagine if you were an actor that did nothing but these groundbreaking movies where you have to train for months and months in some particular craft. You'd literally have the opportunity to learn very rare and unique things. Keanu def comes to mind when thinking about this type of acting career.

A revolutionary film with action sequences and world building that I feel has yet to truly be challenged.

A film that was not only groundbreaking, but also has staying power, with a great cast, great performances, great effects, and involving a LOT of very very hard working people, I still love the Matrix, and if it`s on, I HAVE TO see it :) I know the whole thing by heart, but it doesn`t matter, love me some Matrix lol

The sequels to this movie are so bad that I feel people often forget how great the original is.
