Range Wilson I think that this is a totally fair point and would apply to many pro players in a splashy/fishy private game environment, but I think it applies much less to Doug who is on record as saying he doesn’t enjoy poker anymore or have much urge to play (probably doesn’t care if he’s invited back) and also consistently tries to play a balanced GTO style pretty much regardless of environment and encourages others to try and do the same. He’s also Doug Polk and this is a TV show. He could probably play 12/10/3 and be a boring mute for a sesh or two, and still get called back in to play. I think it’s much more likely the case that Doug is not as studied in multi-way BB defend ring ranges (why would he be?, this isn’t his format) and is quite used to defending very wide from all the HU in his life and in recent months. And perhaps some amount of, “I’m playing with idiots and can probably make up some EV post” as you’ve pointed out, but idk T7o is just so bad MW OOP, regardless of the okay price you’re getting.

In the spirit of "out of the ordinary" of hands, could you analyze some of the hands played by Garret and Andy at LATB? Specifically, I wonder about 2 questions: 1) just how far are they deviating from a balanced strategy, thereby exposing themselves to various exploits? 2) we know these are great live players, what dynamics in a live game with weaker players might justify these out of the ordinary lines?

Multiway using exact bet and stack sizes. I also used 6max 200bb preflop ranges but had to add some marginal hands with 25% frequency to Doug's BB calling range since 107o was not included in the GTO range. Preflop sim includes rake, but Phil opened bigger than the preflop range, so perhaps these effects evened out somewhat.

Look at the massive equity hands like KQ of spades or 67 of spades. What are you doing with a set of 8? The jam puts these hands in a tough spot. The problem with this line, there's no balance. If Phil is jamming some ace ten of spades, JJ, 99, once In a while, then the jam is fine.

I’m so happy to see the solver shoving this combo 98% of the time!! I recently thought to myself the shove was not that bad and something I might have done myself, then I saw doug polks explaining how bad it was. And doug has taught me a lot about poker so I respect him a lot. Needless to say I was pretty disappointed at myself. My reasoning for this combo to be a shove is because he holds the Q of spade. Against every other Q10 combo this combo will be free rolling a backdoor flush draw, winning 4% of the time against the nuts! And chopping the rest.

  • @justmusic2353

Also denying equity from sets, 2 pairs, and strong draws like Ks10s (12 outs because it also wins on a Q turned). And the benefit of realizing all your equity that u might not be able to on many bad turns cards like all spades, Qs, and boats. There’s like 21 cards that you don’t want to see on the turn so not playing by shoving is also pretty neat
