The captain for W. Germany in this World Cup was Owe Seeler, not Beckenbauer.

Uwe was the team leader. But all the German team was top in 1970. Overath, Müller, Beckenbauer, Libuda, Maier, etc. Only 3 days before they also played a memorable match against England decided also in extra time.

In my mind this really was the greatest match ever . With Italy vs Brasil in 1982 as close second .And France W .Germany in 82 as third .

Came here after watching France - Argentia in the 2022 final.

The final would've been a vastly different game, if Germany wouldn't have equalized at stoppage time. Come the final against Brasil, Italians were simply exhausted, physically and mentally.

not much different Brazil most likely would've still won but maybe 3-1 instead of 4-1 with The easiest goal to save being Jairzinho's goal

I love it when Mexico hosts the World Cup! Can't wait for 2026! Sad that Mexico didn't won once, but someday, it'll happen. Either way, congrats to Brazil winning the cup at Mexico!

I really hope that the 2026 final is going to take place at the Estadio Azteca again. But FIFA doesn't care about football history or fan culture. I think that it will be played in Los Angeles in some American Football stadium, instead of a real football stadium with an amazing history. If they would let the fans vote _(Americans, Mexicans and Candians excluded),_ the Azteca would definitely win!

Isn't there a commemorative plaque outside the Estadio Azteca in remembrance of this match? I really hope that the 2026 final is going to take place at the Estadio Azteca again. Giacinto Facchetti: the best left back in football history. Who says Roberto Carlos doesn’t know Facchetti. And Maldini isn‘t a „classic“ left back.

I loved Maldini. I'm actually German and a Dortmund supporter. But I was always in love with Italy and Italian culture, including cuisine. If been to Italy for vacation over ten times. Including visiting the Vatican and San Marino _(I was able to purchase a revolver there back in the 90's)._ My favorite Italian team has/is always been Milan. Maldini is an icon! Cool thing that you appreciate him too, although you're an Inter tifosi! Well, it's the same with Giuseppe Meazza. The San Siro is named after him, although he was an Inter player. I think it's sad that Milan and Inter want to leave the San Siro. It's such a legendary stadium. I know that the stadium situation in Italy is awful. Besides Juventus, nothing has been done since the World Cup in 1990. Italy needs to host another World Cup or the EUROs so that new stadiums will be built and others being renovated. But San Siro has to remain. Even if it's going to be expensive to fix it to the highest FIFA standards. It's worth it! Greetings from Heidelberg, Germany.

A couple of things that makes it all so unique: 1 - Schnellinger and Burgnich were defenders that scored probably less than 5 goals in their entire career and they both scored in that match; 2 - after Gerd Muller's goal that equalized to 2-2, Italians kick off the ball and none of the Germans got to touch the ball until Rivera scored the final 3-2

Why Italy decided to play Mazzola instead of Rivera, who was the Ballon D'Or winner prior to the WC?

Because they both played in the same position, and in a modern game, one player had to be sacrificed, and Valkaregi, the Italian Manager decided it had to be Rivera. During this World Cup, I think he decided to play Mazzola one half, and Rivera the second half. W. Germany had the same problem in 1974: Gunter Netzer was sacrificed, so Wolfgang Ovverat would play as Germany's playmaker. Another example: Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard were both playing great for their respective clubs, but they both underperformed when they played together in England lineup time after time.

Valcareggi only wanted to play one of these great no.10s and preferred Mazzola who he saw as the more competitive of the two. Mazzola was also world class, in fairness.

@@13muller9 Don't mention Gerrard and Lampard in the same company as those other four please. Valcareggi could have solved this problem by playing Mazzola at centre-forward where he started his career alongside Gigi Riva and Rivera behind them, although in the heat of Mexico it wasn't a bad idea with players not being as fit then. He certainly should have done that for the second half in the final rather than wait 6 minutes until the end before bringing on Gianni. Valcareggi finally used the two players together at the 1974 World Cup.

Am Stadion gibt es eine Plakette mit der spanischen Innenschrift: _„Das Azteken-Stadion erweist den Nationalmannschaften Italiens (4) und Deutschlands (3), Hauptdarstellern des „Jahrhundertspiels“ vom 17. Juni 1970 bei der Weltmeisterschaft 1970, die Ehre“_ Das Spiel wird also nicht nur in Deutschland als das "Spiel des Jahrhunderts" angesehen. Auch heute noch gilt es weltweit zumindest zu einem der legendärsten Spielen.
