Put it in the middle and plug a cable into the camera to charge it. Easy fix :P

Hi, thanks for sharing. I just bought a belkin boostcharge for 49$ and it do the job.
Imagine if they invent something where you just eject your battery and insert into a plugin charger. No one gives a sh!t about wireless charging. They should have put a 1 Tb hard drive on board instead.

Or just make a dock that has a mould so that you can align your camera fast with wireless charging.
Thank you very much sir for the demonstration ! I think that in the end, I'll charge my batteries through USB-C or in the charger itself, I have two batteries anyway, and I'll spare some cash thanks to you 😁 Merci monsieur

Yea. The grip is nice still but annoying how you have to unscrew to get the batteries out to charge. The wireless pad is made for two devices with two nipples. But once you put the camera on you pretty much have no room for the second device. So odd in their design isn’t it?
I am interested only in the grip. wireless charge is a bonus or not really interesting. I do wonder how the grip is compared to third-party

I haven't tried third party grip, but the original one felt quite good when handling it. One thing we did noticed is that when screwing the grip onto the body, we head to ensure there is no gap between the grip and the body otherwise there is an annoying squeaky sound 😅. But if you ensure no gap, it feels quite nice to hold.
Thank you for this video, I was considering the charging mat (not this one, but the Native Union equivalent which is a lot cheaper and the exact same thing apart from the Leica branding and with a different top surface) but that off-centre positioning really kills the whole vibe for me. I'll just use one of the charging mats I already have instead. Also, I am a little disappointed with the hand grip -- it's made entirely of plastic and while it is good quality plastic, it feels a lot cheaper in the hand than the naked camera which is metal. It also is NOT arca swiss compatible despite the product images showing a lip at the front. Fingers crossed that Leica release a hand grip like the one for the M11 which is absolutely perfect -- it's made of metal, has very neat access to the battery and SD card and is arca swiss compatible.

Yea I feel you. For me the deal breaker is that you have to align it correctly. Margin of error is so small. It’s like landing on the moon. Can’t just throw it on and let it charge. In that case I will prefer to stick the battery into the separate charging dock then. Glad this info contributed something to your process.
that's indeed a poor design. Qi requires precise alignment, no news there. but they should have placed the charging coil in the grip so that it aligns when the camera is centered on the mat. that alignment guide chart looks like an afterthought. clearly marketing wasn't informed in time for their promo pictures. they could also have made an indent on the grip to help aligning with those pegs on the charger. another missed design opportunity.

Yea I feel like it’s very improvised. So sad.
Thanks. Would you be able to charge the Q using other wireless charging pad? In particular , the small apple MagSafe iPhone charging pad ?
@threeamigoshk
Жыл бұрын
definitely you can, we have a video where we tested a different charging pad ( you check it for more details) but in a nutshell you want to get a wireless pad that has 5 or more coils as this will improve the coverage and perform much better than the Leica original wireless pad

It does. It’s based off Qi technology. Just the more coils you have on the pad the better it is without being so accurate in placing the camera down to charge

@@threeamigoshk Leica does a lot of these things. That's why usually I go with third Party solutions for my grip where I get access to SD and Battery. Especially this camera Having USB C the wireless contradicts the facts. You have to spend more money to block your SD and Battery and get slower charge on the camera. They should've put a joystick , Mic input and a back dial on the Q3 rather than over engineering it with the wireless charging that makes no sense at all IMO
I wish you would have tried this on some other mats. I have a small round Mophie mat and have wondered if this charger would work. I've pre-ordered the handgrip from B&H but may cancel based on your review. I believe the Q2 grip fits the Q3 and it's $50 less expensive.

is coming! we ordered a mat with 5 coils to test it out... as I really feel is the mat doesn't have sufficient coils and only located in those specific areas.. P.S we tested the wireless grip on a powerbank using Qi wireless charging and it worked.

@@threeamigoshk I've tried the Choetech 5 coil charging pad and it's a slow charge rate no matter what PSU is used with it. The winner is the 16 coil Zens Liberty (particularly the glass edition), but this is a big and expensive device. It also has an internal fan, so not best for bedroom use as it's not completely quiet.
Will it be centered charging easier WITHOUT THAT grip? All i will need and get is the THUMB grip.

unfortunately you need that grip (hand grip HG-DC1) in order to have wireless charging! ( The grip feels nice to hold btw, is just how the charging pad was designed.. )

the grip is where the wireless charging receiver is. without the grip the charging base is useless.
This is not a big deal lol. It looks like the lens hood exactly lines up with Leica text on the wireless charger pad😉 👍
@threeamigoshk
Жыл бұрын
Yea I am not too affected by the alignment. But forward and backward positioning is also hard to master. You have the land the dot of the pad on the marking of the grip with very little margin of error. I could load a Q3 battery into the charging dock much faster than this. Can imagine fast paced days will end up charging by the cable instead of accurately landing this thing. Houston we have landed!
And with Tesla coils charger ? The one with the big base do you think it will work ?

Potentially if the charger is using qi wireless to charge it, it should work ( as long you can position it properly on the charger) as those normally are single/ double coils

@threeamigoshk

Yea off center isn’t a big deal - but the deal breaker is the little margin of error. And even when it is correct, it is not obvious that the camera is charging. You have this tiny led light which is hard to see if the set up is placed low eg coffee table. 😂
Thanks for this, how disappointing. Not being able to transfer images whilst charging is a bit of a pain too.

It would be great if it supported it, but I guess for now Qi Charging is limited to power only..
Maybe they did that for the next SL body :) Do you think it’s large enough ?
@threeamigoshk

It depends where they put the charging point on the SL3. So for Q3 is lateralised. But there is an issue of forward tilt when you put a SL Lens onto the body as it is front heavy. No sure how they can overcome this.

It’s said to be the same for watches. But people seemed to love it for Apple Watch. I guess for a point and shoot it is feasible. Just need better design to go with if.
Thanks for the wireless charging and the ability to download the images via cable - There is no need to remove the grip from the camera - This preserves the quality of the mechanical contacts. As for your comment about not been usable - I would say it’s not esthetic, but it has nothing to do with usability. Thanks for the informative video

Thanks for watching. I think the biggest issue isn’t aesthetics but the need for accurate placement. Practically speaking it is slower than popping a battery into the charger or plugging in the power cable to the camera. If the wireless idea is to improve convenience then the time to get it to dock must be faster than existing methods in Q2. Otherwise it is defeats the design and purpose. It’s use is to improve user experience and annoying it doesn’t do that.
@YoramPomer

@@threeamigoshk I agree. If the docking station is not fool proof, than it can be annoying. This is probably why Apple is promoting the MagSafe that keeps the device aligned so that it get the maximum charging results.

Leica claims 3hrs per charge to full for a Q3. It is not that bad. The grip does heat up even after charging to full. I wish they could make it more user friendly to place the camera properly. It’s hard to align it correctly.

It has its uses. I have to admit I wasn’t too excited about it especially when I can’t put my camera in the dry box. But it is convenient if you can throw the camera on there on the go. Too bad you can’t and probably need a whole team of NASA scientist to land it properly back in Houston. I hope to see more third party or user invented ideas to bypass this in the future. The grip is a nice thing though. Protects the base of the camera at least.
