October is undoubtedly the most exciting month of the year for fans of Major League Baseball. It allows for the best that this sport has to offer. In 2008, the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays played in the American League Championship Series. This was Tampa's first ever appearance, after being baseball's worst team a year prior, matching up against the defending World Series champions. Today, Matt discusses his favorite postseason of all-time, a historic 7-game dogfight between two very different teams, including what may be the greatest single game comeback in MLB postseason history!

Happy Father’s Day to all the good dads out there! If you came to debate before making it to the end of the video, I’ll spoil it for you now and say that I know this isn’t the “objective” greatest CS ever, even if it is my own personal favorite. This was just the best video title among the options we came up with. Hope you guys have a good day and i’ll see you next time!

Another LCS that was great in its own right also involved the Rays winning despite the other team nearly coming back: the 2020 ALCS. Rays get off to a 3-0 series lead, the Astros claw their way back to force a Game 7, with the Rays pulling away in the end. All the games were close: no game was decided by 3 or more runs. The Rays were fighting to finally get over the hump and get revenge for the team that beat them the year prior, the Astros were trying to silence critics following the sign-stealing scandal. Overall an extremely underrated series even 2 years after it happened. Everyone talks about the Braves collapsing in the 2020 NLCS but the 2020 ALCS was likely the better series.

For me, it will always be the sheer insanity and gravity of the 2004 ALCS. It truly was the exorcism of all the Red Sox demons. With the Sox pulling off a feat that stands alone in MLB history by going down 0-3 and winning 4 in a row. For me, I don't think that can be topped.

I was 11 years old during that postseason. Every year my elementary school would take the 6th grade class on a weeklong field trip to a stay over camp and have the kids participate in a bunch of different activities in place of actual class work. That week coincided with the World Series. I never got to watch it live. This might be blasphemous to some Red Sox fans… but I’ve never watched the ‘04WS, because to me there was no need. It was predetermined after the Sox exorcised 86 years of demons in that ALCS. Nothing will ever beat it. Not the Cubs in 2016, even though their drought was 20 years longer. Not the White Sox in 05 even though they also had a longer drought than Boston. I don’t even think the Mariners winning one would supplant it. That series proves there are baseball gods, and they’re keeping score in their own way.

Because the Rays had a 3-1 league it stands to reason that you guys had the series and all you guys had to do was finish up. Say for example the Phillies collapse after taking a clear hold of the WS well the WS would have been epic if you guys came back!!!!

I know this isn't a butterfly effect video, but I love those videos. Being a Twins fan, my favorite butterfly effect story is how the 1981 players strike led to the Twins winning the World Series in 1987 and 1991. Because of the strike, Twins assistant farm director Jim Rantz went to see his son play a junior college game in Central Illinois. There were only about 25 fans there, and no scouts. The Central Illinois League players were not draft eligible in those days, so there was no reason for scouts to be there. One of the players on the visiting team went 3-4, homered, threw a guy out at the plate, and stole a couple of bases. Rantz immediately called back to the office and insisted the Twins keep an eye on this player. His name was Kirby Puckett.

For so long being butts of jokes, constantly getting shit even as a middle schooler for being a Rays fan in a pretty transplant heavy part of Tampa, it was so satisfying to watch this all unfold. I even convinced my mom to let me get a blue "Ray"Hawk that lord, did NOT look good on me, but damn as a kid, i just wanted them to win. I was so heartbroken over that loss in Philly and I rocked that Rayhawk for a solid 6 months after that series ended, but damn, I know there isn't crying in baseball, but this video took me back. Idk if this makes me a bad Red Sox fan but I think the 7 game World Series vs Houston that year is my favorite series of all time. Top 10 LCS in my book for sure, and by far the most criminally underrated even in the MLB community. I still have stiff competition ahead of it as far as LCS go, though: 1997 ALCS (Cleveland-Baltimore), 2004 ALCS AND NLCS (Red Sox-Yankees and Cardinals-Astros, respectively), 1986 NLCS (Mets-Astros), and 1999 NLCS (Atlanta-New York). Game 5 pissed me off so much lol, and I do have to wonder if the Rays having to go to 7 against the Red Sox cost them in the World Series.

The 08 series could of went both ways and still had a story going into the world series. You either have the Sox going back to back after falling down 3 to 1 in the ALCS or the Rays regardless they finished the series getting into the Fall Classic for the First time in Franchise history. As the story goes the Rays ended up in the Series for the first time in Franchise history and the Sox didn't recover until 2013!!!! That was Terry Francona's last serious playoff run as Manager of the Boston Redsox.

As a Red Sox fan, I had never heard anything about that incredible game 5. Just goes to show what happens to games that ultimately aren’t succeeded by ultimate success.

I was at my sister's for a BBQ the day of game 5, resigned to a Sox defeat, fucking Melvin Upton deflating me further as I drove home, arrived at home only to see the 7th inning comeback. Same thing happened during the comeback against Detroit in 2013, but I stayed there and got blindingly drunk and went from angry to euphoric. Damn, the Ortiz-era Sox really fucked with your levels.

Another subplot to the Ortiz HR off Balfour was that he looked cooked before that. Like he couldn't catch up to anything. So, of course he hits a bomb off the guys on the Rays with the best fastball. Timlin being cooked caused the extra inning loss, and Tek being cooked hurt them all series until he finally got a hold of one in game 6. It was a bad year for the class of 2004 until it wasn't.
