I saw Fanny headline at Sussex University with two other bands in the early 70's they were fantastic! Can't remember the name of the second band on the bill but the opening act was Leo Sayer in his blues band before he became famous and he was outstandingly good!

I found out about Fanny about a year ago, thanks to a documentary on PBS. I was blown away by the musicianship of all four of them, but I was especially impressed by Jean and Alice de Buhr, their drummer. I was also really annoyed that I didn't know about them when I was growing up. They were pretty successful in their day and it's a crime that their music was forgotten for so long. But I'm glad they're starting to get some recognition again.

My favorite song by Fanny is "Blind Alley", sung mainly by keyboard player Nickey Barclay. I've run across both the studio version and a Beat Club live version here on KZread. David Bowie was a big fan of theirs.

Blind Alley stands up really well musically, lyrically, and the Beat Club version in terms of performance very well in terms of classic rock of the period. It should be much better known, IMHO, and something a good classic rock covers band could do. Sadly, too few people would recognise it.

David Bowie was a big fan and tried to pull strings to get them more exposure, but they faced a lot of resistance from executives because they were women, plus LGBTQ+ bigotry. I see Alice is here so can probably confirm or deny what I'm saying. The pianist did see some success with session work as well as some solo material. IIRC, she now lives in the UK. I'd have paid good money to see her in a band with some other USA ex-pats like Suzi Quattro.

Some of the Fanny self-penned material was excellent and it surprises me that it's not well known in classic rock circles. It's never too late to promote it. When a friend's daughter started playing in a rock band I sent some Fanny albums as inspiration to show that anything is possible for a young woman starting out in rock. Or, given how it works, I paid the money and Alice de Buhr sent them. Thanks for that!
