Ian Allison needs to be included on Bass Tales with all the basses he owns
Every time I hear talented bass players like this, I'm filled with envy because I didn't study the instrument with the same passion. Ray makes it look so easy, casual even. Huge respect. Also, 1966 must have been a good year for bass guitars - I was six years old.!
I started playing in 1964 and these Basses were new at the time, thing is I don't remember seeing a lot of them. But remember no internet or anything like that. As far as local players at the time, there were Airline Basses and a few Gibson's also Rickenbacker but mostly no name Basses at that time.....No round wound strings BTW

Wow! Thank you for sharing this with us! It’s easy to forget how it was back then. We have access to everything right now and can see anything
Beautiful collection! This video should never end… I could watch him talk about these basses non-stop.

Oooh!! You are absolutely right! Maybe Scott should go visit Mr. Lee, film "The greatest bass collection" and correct this title to "One of the greatest bass collection on earth".... no offense, just kidding!! Without a doubt a beautiful collection of great basses!! But a visit to Geddy Lee is overdue!!! I love this channel!!!
Yeah, Ray!!! I love this guy...and I am pretty jealous about his bass collection, this is pure awesomeness! 😍👍👍👍
Beautiful in all ways. I love the sounds of all those 65 and 66 basses. I'm glad you just talk about the basses and not the prices. So you were born in 66. You are so humble to let the basses speak for themselves. Their little bits of history. Thank you for a great program.
Ray recorded with Rob Halford a few very good albums. And one legendary gig from Germany ,something about 2000-2001.Always with Fender👍🤘 volcano of energy. True, mighty metal with fenomenal voice of Halford🤘👍

He's a Zon signature artist as well. He played that incredible '66 Fender P bass last night here in Phoenix with Marble Heart. I'm spoiled to have the opportunity to see him play every weekend.
I owned a 75 Fender Mustang in sunburst for about 2 months. It was beautiful, but I took it back to the shop to sell on consignment because I am just not skilled enough to do it justice. That bass belonged on a stage. I'm told the purchaser is a regular on the local and regional music scene, so it went to a better place.
I owned a '71 Musicmaster bass. Long story, but gone long ago. My fave now is a 2021 Squier Classic Vibe Mustang bass. The best bass I've ever owned!! No dead spots, and just a string change to LaBella flats will do it. Great video!!
I remember reading about him in Bass Player magazine in the 90s - he had a headless Modulus back then.

The 63 with matching headstock is just magnifico.
Talking about birth YEAR basses, I can beat that. I was born on the 17th of January 1967, and both pickups on my Jazz bass are dated, hand written on the back, 1/17 1967. So I have my birth DAY bass. You're just not meant to find stuff like that! I had no plan to buy a vintage bass, but when I saw that, I just had to, and have absolutely no regrets, for it is a magnificent thing, that is awesome to play. The neck is dated Dec 66, but the pickup date means it was assembled in early 1967.
Really enjoy these bass tale episodes. Thank you!
Incredible tone and sound with all the basses...these are true gems
Ray is awesome. He taught me how to slap back in the early 90's! 🤣
This is one of the best Fender bass guitar videos I have ever seen. This was some of the most entertaining content I have enjoyed on Fender basses. Many thanks!

That 66 Jazz Bass is amazing! omg what a dream. Surf Green and matching headstock? wow
Killer collection of basses. Something to bear in mind though Ray for future bassplayers; more 70s Fenders ✌
My friend Dave plays a 73 music master with a 61 p pickup in it... I love that bass and have tried too buy it many time lol
So much awesomeness in the sound of these basses! Oh my!!!
That's a swell collection....and holy smokes what a great bass player!
Whats the bass line from at 7:44? Sounds amazing!

What a beautiful collection. You said the NYC area? There’s hope. I’d love to play one of these sometime. My birth year came in at the end but the ‘65 and ‘66 really did it for me. On such vintage instruments I wouldn’t want to alter much and you don’t seem to. Very nice. Cheers!
'66 is my birth year, too. Beautiful basses and great playing.
Is this his basses?? Man I wish I could afford a 70s Jazz and a 78 stingray 😍😍 dream bass for sure!! One day maybe that Brazilian rosewood is absolutely beautiful!!! Love the clay dots!!
That CAR jazz bass sounds amazing. Exactly like a vintage jazz bass sounds in my head.
Cool information! I learned a lot. Beautiful collection.
Wow, great collection! all sound great too
Nice collection. Interesting thing about those pre cbs clay dots. I once read they were punched out of some old left over composite flooring tiles. The composite tiles back then would have been constructed out of asbestos. Only dangerous if you drill or sand them and breathe in the particulate dust.
Great vid, such an awesome collection. I love and hate the end of this video :-)
Loved his playing in Halford
Beautiful collection.
I have a 1967 CBS p bass completely original put stripped to natural... so punchy and warmy signature sound... a great instrument !

This is my jam..love this stuff
I could watch this all day
What music did you play with jazz bass 66 surf green? Where Can I listen more this? Congrats!!! Beautiful basses!!!! Awesome!!
Ray, awesome collection dude!!! Sounds like you are a Rocco Prestia enthusiast! 😎😎😎😎
dude the bass line on the 66 fender was out of this world like scott you got to start teaching these bass lines
Ray is the shit. Just saw him here in Phoenix last night with his regular gig, Marble Heart. Solid AF... Always.
This is my first time to see your program. Vintage Basses
I'd love to have a collection where I'm also surprised by what's in the case lol. Some beauties in there for sure. And your chops... so tasty!

Thanks, that worn red J-bass did it for me!
That 66j groove was killing
Great demo & great playing
Just got a 56 Duo Sonic. It did rely not have the entirely plastic pup covers, but six Strat magnets with the two center ones higher than the others. I wondered if they were original or added later.
Awesome!
I love Ray...Awesome gent
That 66 jazz is beautiful 🤩
Beatiful !
Can you do a Bass Tales episode with Glenn Hughes from The Dead Daises (ex. with Deep Purple and Black Sabbath), please?
lollipop tuners should go well with my guitar with lipstick elements those old names for kit are pretty cool
Great collection and player !
Beautiful collection, but greatest collection....hmmmmmm ? The post 1965 basses are real "vintage" in my eyes, so nice to see a '63 in there :)
my first bass was a musicmaster in 1976. i still have it

I have a '76 musicmaster as well, still has the sticker on the back of the headstock, Lynn's Guitars of Knoxville TN, the local Gretsch dealer where Chet Atkins bought his guitars
Ritchie Blackmore has a great story on one of his guitars where he added an extra button on the headstock just for to mess with the guitar enthusiasts.
Before the internet, arond 2003-2004 I saw you first in the Fender Bassstreet catalog. When I received a CD from my fellow bass player friend, mixed with all other great bassists (Patitucci, Bailey, etc..) I saw your name on the CD (I think it was your ZON period, because the sound was sharp and hifi) Now I see you here, and still, you are the reason I pick up the instrument every day. You are one of my all time bass hero. Thank you! :)

😂😂😂… Loved the ending!!!…
Great basses and one hell of a player!!
sick collection.
Now that is a treasure collection.... : ) I started playing on a 1979 Musicmaster bass I received Christmas of 1980 Black/Rosewood very basic but I loved that bass until like an idiot I felt I "outgrew" it and traded it in for a Peavey T40 "boat anchor" lol ! Also a great bass but OMG was it heavy. Later....much later in life I acquired from an estate sale a Squire reissue MusicMaster bass in Pepto Bismol pink. It was in a basement,(out of a case) so long it had mold on it. I stripped it and refinished in TV yellow and installed a custom wound Arrow pick up and a blackout SD tone system. Sounds better than my 76 "P" bass : ) all it needed was a little love.....

NICE JOB RAY
Amazing, Amazing collection and great playing on these beautiful basses!
PEOPLE WANT PINO Great video by the way :)
Ray is the real deal. Rare that there’s a legit player that knows the history in and out
Wow 🎸🎸
from 8:02 I automatically started to sing along a fokin' Oasis song, it's Biblical! Love the video
I have a '76-'77 Fender Musicmaster that was my first bass. It is still totally stock with the original strat. pickup in it. I go back and forth on what (if anything) I should do with it, modding wise. I really don't like the tone now and rarely (if ever) actually play it.
@tspicks4360

There are a number of options for Musicmaster pickup substitutions. Strat pickups without the 6 individual pole pieces seem to work well (Hot Rails, Lace, etc.). Also there are drop in replacement bass pickups being made. Sentell pickups make several Musicmaster bass pickups. They're good.
great player!
what are Ray's favourite rounds and flats for those vintage beauties? thanx
Ray is a great player
:: I notice the Musicmaster pickup is closer to the neck on the ad. Is that an error or another model? ::
Wish I could find my Candy Apple Red ‘64 Jazz bass I bought new in ‘64!!! Sold in Wisconsin about 1974?
Someone deciding to sand the entire back of their bass is still more authentic than intentionally beating up brand new instruments to give them a 60's costume.
Does anyone know the name of the song he’s playing on the musicmaster?
Love me a fender p bass..love the lolipop tuners too!
"66' is my birth-year" Didn't think he was a day over 43, damn basses must have de-ageing properties
Beautiful! anyone know what song he was playing on the surf green jazz bass?? sounds similar to “sex in a pan” by the flecktones!
Daphine Blue? I always thought it was Daphne
Awesome work ray, although I have got more basses than you 😂
That dud is bad ass it makes me want it to learn to play Bass 😂
It looks like someone's dog used some parts of that Fiesta Red 1963 J-Bass that was at the end of the video as a chew toy.
nice hommage to wootens "sex in a pan" with the '66 Jazz there :)
So what exactly is the hootenanny button for?
Still looking for a clean japanese mustang in fiesta red to scratch that Dakota red mustang itch.

Back to report the MIJ fender mustang is great.
Not to be a negative Nancy, but the stingray in the beginning of the video was the most exciting thing here. I just don't get vintage fenders I guess
FYI, vintage bass vault has a KZread channel. Only 77 subs? We all need to fix that.
Damm I'm too old for a birth year bass!
What types of strings were used?

Lol?
The mustang is what colour? Daphne or Delphine Blue?!
Its not a simple strat pickup. It is a bit wider and the sound is totally different because of it. A bass with a strat pick up would just sound like the lower register of a strat
@MisterJawaman
2 жыл бұрын
It's a Mustang pickup (the guitar version, not the bass). It does have an extra capacitor in the circuit to roll off some of the highs, but otherwise the pickup is not wound any different for this bass
All basses with flatwounds?
have pino on the next one or sean hurley
