The Great Smog

Season 04 : British Isles
Episode 05 : The Great Smog : London, England
Environmentalism is a major hot topic all over the world today, and with good reason. After all, if the planet we live on is damaged by pollutants to the point it starts rebelling against us, it's not as if we have anywhere else to go. But while increased extreme weather phenomena and rising global temperatures are a problem we all have to deal with today, many people have come together and are making an effort to make our future brighter. Sometimes though, the darkness takes over.

Agreed. I've noticed many creators are not only using an AI voice but definitely AI generated scripts which have errors in fact. Then they have the AI generated vid clips which don't quite gel with the story. It's just Ugh!

@timfagan816 That sounds like torture. In the narcolepsy test they tell you to take a nap every 2 hours. There are 5 naps. If you're asleep and dreaming in less than 8 minutes in 4 of the 5, you're narcoleptic. I was asleep and dreaming in less than 3 minutes all 5 times 🥱. God I love sleep. Some people think it's depression. I don't think so. It's my favorite thing. Always has been.

And still are. Kids faint on sports days in inner city schools. Sometimes you can see the smog or haze now. Every morning I wake up and cough up the muck we breathe. 40,000 londoners still die of pollution related issues. Most times, you can't see the pollution, but its still there. Now they just make us pay for it.

In the mid 2000's I lived in the Dayton, Ohio area and in August, there was a smog problem. My toddler son had an asthma attack that put him in the hospital. He did not even have asthma. We had to wait 10 hours for a bed to open up in the children's ward because so many babies were there for asthma. They had to put three kids to a room that week.

One of the "Great Fogs" of the 1800's ( The "Great Stink" of 1858) ,though, finally led Parliament to get moving on legislation to stop using the Thames as a sewer, and upgrade the sub-par sewer system that was in place at the time The fog trapped all the noxious odors that emanated from the river inside the halls of Parliament for days. The MPs didn't care if the "peasants" had to deal with such things, but when THEY were personally inconvenienced, it became a serious matter that required immediate attention . This led to the creation of the most advanced sewage system known at the time.

Two days in a row !! We are blessed 🙌 One of the largest coking and coal tar processing plants was Manvers located in the Dearne Valley, South Yorkshire, during the 60's and 70's when i was at school, dense clouds of nauseous fog would fill the air with the tell tale odour of rotten eggs. The area was well known for coke (a by-product of coal production) and tar manufacture. In our close knit community and in an area of maybe twenty miles there were over a dozen working mines where a large amount of coal would be sent. Its a different story today. The air is cleaner and the stench is none existent. A really interesting post Jiles.

I was in London for the smogs of 1952 and 1962. In 1952, when I was a baby, my mother took a bus home. As the family ad only just moved, she was apprehensive when she eventually arrived at her bus stop. Fortunately for her, a number of blind people were waiting at the bus stop. She was led home by a blind lady, a case of charity with the blind leading the sighted. I remember being kept indoors in the smog of 1962. We were living in a flat between Bayswater and Queensway stations. I also remember not being able to see out of the window.

London is quite bizarre to walk around now. Almost every vehicle is electric. On the rare occasion a non electric vehicle goes past you, you smell it first, then realise how quiet it is without the engine sounds. I used to go on frequent day trips to London as a child in the 1980's and the smog was often still mentioned by adults. I never knew how severe it was until this video. Thank you

UK citizen here. If have a friend who is a 40 year experienced mechanic and he's was telling me just a few days ago that a lot of cars produced today actually pump out cleaner air that they suck in! Most of the buildings in MY city in the past were literally black from the soot from chimneys and traffic pollution. They were eventually cleaned off (by sandblasting) around the early 80's and have retained their original 'white' colour, showing how effective modern pollution has been tackled. On the other hand, the ULEZ zones (ultra low emission zone) is a source of contention as although the idea itself might seem good, it unfortunately will only allow the rich to travel across certain parts of the city. Indeed, it's often the rich who have bigger and more polluting cars and they rarely don't care how much their cars are fuel efficient. Stopping ordinary people from travelling through certain parts of London without paying large sums of cash will Invariably affect them more than than the 'supposed' amount of people suffering from ill health due to pollution (assuming one can accurately measure what effect pollution actually has on the populace, as opposed to maybe other factors such as smoking etc). ULEZ might seem like a good idea, on the surface, but if it goes ahead, the impact will probably be far worse on the general population (and perhaps businesses) than the handful - comparatively speaking- of people who PERHAPS suffer from this type of pollution (if any).

Its a nice thought but i can assure you, your new car idling in a garage will still absolutely kill you, not improve your air. The only real advancements in the emissions of automobiles are the diesel exhaust fluid systems for Diesels. In terms of gasoline vehicles the advent of computer controlled fuel injection has allowed for more exact control of the ideal air/fuel ratio of 14.7:1 so there isnt excess fuel vapor due to engines running rich. That being said, fuel burning engines are still better enviromentally than electric vehicles that contain batteries that require mining of toxic chemicals that is done using huge amounts of fossil fuels and have no enviromentally friendly way of disposal after just a decade or so of use.

I'm glad to see Sinister back. Hope your visual appearance has stopped the algorithm demonetizing your content. Your research, collation and creation of historical images into a montage, script writing, narrating and editing deserves to be paid. I understand they want to remove the AI content, but clearly, their method is inadequate. Thanks for a trip back home!

The more I've learned about our power grid & our climate, the more i realize that modern nuclear energy is our best option. LFTRs, Thorium Reactors, molten salt reactors, etc. Utilizing our advanced technology, Improved engineering & material science. Utilizing our greater understanding of safety & well made designs. We have so much more advanced computer technology & robotics that can be used. It feels like even tho tons of advancement has occurred with engineering designs, safety measures, etc. It still doesn't matter to most people. It's like most people are ingrained with a natural negative response when talking about nuclear energy. It's a bummer because i truly believe that our best option for our future is to start utilizing Modern advanced nuclear energy options in our electrical grid. It's just proving to be challenging to get politicians to get on board. It will really allow places to be much more energy independent. Less reliant on fossil fuels. They'll have efficient, stable electrical grids and the rest of the grid could experiment with alternative power sources, power desalination plants, etc. We need to heal from the trauma of our past. See & learn that those things only happened solely from Us not understanding what we were doing when it came to nuclear energy at the time. We didn't have advanced enough technology, material science, engineering, safety measures, understanding of how to go about everything, etc. This source of energy will greatly help the world improve towards the future and lowering emissions. More than anything else could, while also providing a very stable electrical grid system. Currently we have alternative energy options but the majority of our grid is powered off of fossil fuels and emission producing sources of energy. We will be so much better going forward commiting to modern advanced nuclear energy options. It's been very irritating that our society has taken this "Change is up to you" approach. It just takes advantage of people's emotions. This climate issue is so much bigger than any one individual. This needs to be an across the board kind of thing. That's the only way we might make the Slightest difference. We've already waited too long. Everyday is a day wasted. A day where we haven't committed to modern nuclear energy options. Where we haven't even started building it. It should be utilized in collaboration with other alternative energy sources all over the place. This power source is the best option to improve our environment & will really help lower our emissions. The only thing holding us back is legislation, fear mongering & past trauma that's affected us from our past failures (which is understandable but I know we can do better now. We've learned so much sense then. We gotta give it a shot. It's such a beneficial energy source when done right) Did they outlaw electricity, oil, natural gas or coal when things went wrong in the early days of those fields? No! They kept going and understood things usually are bumpy and difficult in the beginning and kept going even tho those sources negatively impacted our environment. A huge issue is our government is BLOCKING any sort of progression from happening. Will be lucky to see the slightest projects approved or finished with-in the next 100 years.. It's very annoying to see how much we have gotten in our own way when it comes to improving or advancing certain things. Instead we let fear, money, man made "required legal processes" Stop us from doing anything other than wind, solar, oil, natural gas, damming our rivers, mining for minerals... It's very frustrating because we should be able to use all these options in collaboration. If we actually wanted to improve anything. That's what we need to do and stop letting so much potential get blocked from ever occurring in the first place.. It's really irritating. I wish certain people didn't make this so "complicated and difficult" Why would any reasonable person want to block progression?
