Back then a very important element for combat was body armor. The Maltese people undoubtedly fought courageously but the superior armor of the Knights was an important factor to success. This is shown in the chronicle of Snt. Elmo... Mainly Knights and Spanish soldiers were holding the fort. and they kept it standing for a month. This was a strong blow to the Ottoman moral as more than 8000 turks had died. From what I've read...

Actually the body armour was more of an inconvenience at times, especially since this war was fought throughout the summer months. In fact many knights suffered from severe heatstrokes.

I don't know where you got your details from but there are no records of Toni Bajada actually engaging in hand to hand combat while swimming across the Grand Harbour. The only hand to hand combat in the sea that took place was in a case close to where the chain was put up. Toni Bajada had to look out for attacks from Kalkara and Mount Schiberras. The trip was often done by boat as well, prior to Dragut's arrival. It was Dragut's idea to attempt to stop the reinforcement of St Elmo.

Spring to resupply the troops with men, rations and ammo and continue the siege the next year but the Grande Soccorso didnt allow that and fought the remainder of the Ottoman Land Troops back into the fleet till they swam to the fleet and retreated fully. so idk but im thinking dat with total number of troops through most of the siege being round 8,100 with 48,000 attackers they are both quite impressive odds

When have the Copts of Egypt - the original Egyptians ever been apologized to by the muslims who conquered Egypt, Bashir of Sudan has told the Africans to get out of Sudan etc. etc. the list goes on. Comments here tend to demonstrate we have not learned much from History. Fanaticism, wether islamic or christian, leads to strife, bloodshed and massacre. Such battles should be seen for what they are. Courageous men on both sides have fought and died. But the battles have been provoked by the very few and very powerful who sought through others' death their own power and glory. The 17th century was one of religious fanaticism. Nothing to be proud of as such.

ow and 5 agreeing with maltamonument here, if u look over the history of the maltese islands you will find that they were never taken over by force, but because the people allowed the powers of old to enter cause they had no faith in themselves to lead themselves, and both wars we were involeved in WW2 and The Great Siege we didnt lose, and and about the french well we let em in as well cause most of the knights were french so they didnt wanna fight napoleon and so we allowed the french to come

Judaism, Christianity and Islam, have more than one thing in common but undeniably each claim to be the only way to salvation. Why cant they be like the sun that gives light to everyone regardless of race or creed. Yes, I remember a wise man once said because the same sun that gives light also creates shadows. So people, stop extolling your faith unless it is universal and without discrimination less it is the shadow of the universal law of karma.

@thefreeman879112 жыл бұрын
Whoever made this does not know military history at all. In the first place, Rhodes was besieged three times and the first time Suleiman was not there. Also, Malta is barren but that has nothing to do with where the knights wanted to stay. Giving Malta to the knights was an honor because Malta controls the Mediterranean. Keep in mind that the knights were warriors not fat greedy people who wanted to live in a comfortable beautiful Utopia.

potugalreis yea that is impressive but u gotta be honest the true numbers of troops in the great siege of malta were aprox 48, 000 total Ottoman troops and around 8,100 defenders plus the reinforcements that came towards the end of the siege the Piccollo Soccorso of aprox 400 men that snuk into the forts and jioned the defenders and the
Grande Soccorso of aprox 8000 men that stood and faced the Ottoman troops next to Mdina on the Ridge or San Pawl Tat-Targa and fought them on open ground and pushed them back into the Sea and thats what ended the siege cause after the Ottomans moved away from the
"Report to the Convent before spring. The Sultan intends to besiege Malta"
Finally some one who know history you was right nearly 40 000 ottoman troop with Big canon vs 500 knights(do I remember correctly) ottoman lose horribly.

500 knights plus 2,500 Maltese militia iirc. Still incredible odds.
The Native Americans have been apologized to and are now referred to as The First Nation. When have the muslim conquerers ever apologized to the Persians who's country they took and even renamed it to Iran. When have the Copts of Egypt - the original Egyptians ever been apologized to by the muslims who conquered Egypt, Bashir of Sudan has told the Africans to get out of Sudan etc. etc. the list goes on. It's the Qur'an and it's teachings that is your problem - Rene
Insults must be the best argument you've got.
Grand Harbour and Marsamxett Harbour and abandoned the remains of fort St.Elmo they turned to Mdina to take it so the troops could stay the winter there and the fleet would have returned to north africa to resupply and avoid the dangerous September Mediterranean storms and then return next
but dude portugalreis at the siege of constantinople were der were 200,000 vs 7000 constantinople fell, whilst at the great siege of malta, malta didnt fall thats the very impressive difference and remember that the 2 forts of st michael and st elmo werent big and were built quickly only st angelo was a very well established and strong fort and it was the only one so dats the impressive thing
Besides, no historian seems to have mentioned the sharks which you are gossiping about.
@portugalreis Well, fair or not..it is ours ..I don't think Fatih said to the byzantinium that they had to fight with a small army
@portugalreis so what?? we are not talking about football match here like 11 against 11... there is no rule in war..
@captn1pugwash sry i meant battle of Preveza ofcourse
ow and 5 agreeing with maltamonument here, if u look over the history of the maltese islands you will find that they were never taken over by force, but because the people allowed the powers of old to enter cause they had no faith in themselves to lead themselves, and both wars we were involeved in WW2 and The Great Siege we didnt lose, and and about the french well we let em in as well cause most of the knights were french so they didnt wanna fight napoleon and so we allowed the french to come
@Kinetekist Sean Connery looks like la Vallette. But no- one seems to care about Malta. Omni Maltija mil- Belt. Blue seas even on the dullest of winter days...
@captn1pugwash we took the balkans from the hands of europe, we took the mighty middle east were warriors were born, we took entire north africa in hand of the mighty mamlukes and we defended our empire for 700 years what else can i tell you?
actually 40 000 ottomans vs 400 skilled hospitallier soldiers and about 8000 maltese peasants
Ah you know a troll is struggling when he brings up the family. Not the sharpest knife in the draw are you.
soo true m8
the maltese people must have been mentioned. They fought and suffered as well.
The Nazis couldn't take Malta, either. They tried from 1940-1942 and gave up.
@futuramark im happy they didnt let us, because now since we are turning our back against europe and having business with the middle east our turkish economy is going up with 12% per year
We all had bad moments, but we lack terrorist organizations to date. We're churches world wide, peace makers and families, families being murdered for praising Christ, pay attention to your religion more closely.
sooo DeliBasAli wat exactly are u trying to say?
hmmm it was taken by more people but see... ;p we never lost a war.... no blood was shed when napoleon took malta. and when we got sick of the french, we asked the british for help and they liberated us :p... the only 2 wars which malta had (1565 and WW2,) malta managed to survive them without retreating to the enemy
Im An English American .Love my religion Christianity.we need be protect of it.
@legat00 Battle of lepanto - 70 thousand christians verseus 12 thousand ottomans result : Heroic ottoman victory
No flag in Malta should ever be allowed to fly higher than the red and white colors. Give the Knights their token office at Fort St. Angelo, but no matter how much they've changed, keep them in their place. Don't forget how lousy they became. And stuff the EU. Malta for Malta.
@DeliBasAli you know that the turks sended in 100 Janissarie elite soldiers into that castle and they killed arround 1 thousand soldiers and they also kept the castle gate down... then the rest of the army came i mean you wouldnt win even if we were 1 thousand
Oh look we have a bad ass over here.
@G00n3r4Life no it wasnt, it was just colonies of week regions
Life is very unfair....
@wiseone1949 Battle of lepanto 70 thousand christians vs 12 thousand ottoman peasents result : Heroic ottoman victory
“Two great armies” says the narrator. Great meaning large. Eh no.
It's annoying how he prounced the word Sciberras. He pronounces it 'Sheberrah'. And he says SengEa instead of SEnglea. Lol.
I beg your pardon? Jiena Malti bħalek tuba u mid-dehra ma tantx taf iżjed minni. Tħarref taf żgur.
Kemm int mimli bil-għerf ikolli ngħid. Ma nafx minn liema dimensjoni jreġi dan l-argument wara dak li għidna.
ow and nothing against wat ur saying but balbi was a mercenary so his word cant be fully trusted, other records agree with each other, balbi's records are the only ones dat disagree most times with the other records
You did not get the truth beauty of it. Polish and chech husars came to rescue, when Suleiman with his troops run away. Back to Turkey.
Keep in mind that the knights were warriors not fat greedy people who wanted to live in a comfortable beautiful Utopia.
dude i mentioned da brithish empire >.>
I dont get it,you called them barbarians,i see that happens several hundred years ago,let me pull the subject little away from this to Today's Barbarians, you are saying these barbarians killed childs and women and so on several hundred years ago while everyone had equal power and where everyone try to invade others. What Would you call Today whats happening In the middle east?in 2008,would you still call it barbaric?what is the definition Of barbarian for you?
yea dude, ur right XD we were only ruled by anyone only wen we allowed dem to come in and rule us and each time dey pissed us off out dey went XD wow im feeling quite patriotic all of a sudden :P
Proud2beaturk
There where only 2000 knights of st.john the maltese even women did the fighting and building of forts. They where financed and drawn up by knights thou.
Yeah...sure...thanks for that protection racket where you referred to us as dhimmis....

Respect Antoine from Québec Canada 🇨🇦 ! I was born in Algiers ! Story is fascinating ! In our langage in Algiers we have some Maltais word !!
Yeah yeah but historians who live at this time saying different right?Even maybe someone remind you CRUSADERS and what happened to them when they faced with Turks, just try to read a little before writing comment here.
I wonder what kind of history knowledge you have, you really believe that Eastern Roman Empire last castle and their main city covered with 7.000 men?Yeah wasnt great battle but shake the history right?
You have the intelligence of a fly.
suppressing fire i didnt say he was a hero all i said was dat he wasnt a soldier dat dispatched hundreds of enemies all i said was dat he was an informant, spy and messanger
Ottoman Empire never let Israel in peace ,the Ottoman always stealing what they can to survive ,Ottoman even helped the nazi to steal what Europe had including woman and children as usually God Bless Malta and the Knights
Ah and there we have it the racist troll shows his true colours. Off to celebrate my victory.
is it when turks killed others or is it Others killed others?or is it depend on who killed who?so what i am saying is You are free to call anyone barbarian as well as with your definition of barbarian any country in the did the same thing to others.brits killed so many Indians on 18 Century,American killed Native Indians, btw 14 to 18 century,French Killed Algerian 20 century, german killed Jews in 20 century, and i can count many of it and have killed cildren and woman and old and and and
The ottoman empire was not the best military force. I doubt it said the carpenter and shed a bitter tear. They were te Mongols.
This is another story of ignorant people getting whoopped!!!! Long LIve the knights of st john !!!! i love it
@expendiblesam in fact that the ottomans saved the jews from spain
;p malta never lost a war.... get it? the great siege... even in world war 2... we were heavily bombarded yet never fell to the nazi.... when we wanted the french to leave... we also did that. when we wanted independence, republic and freedom... we also got that with no blood shed... apart from the revolt in 1919 (in which 4 maltese were murdered by the english)
commenting as a local i might believe that the maltese did all the fighting but without the forts built by the crusaders and the armaments brought by them aswell...all we would have did was suck some ottomans toes :)
dude oz83 the greeks under alexander the great the mongols under genghis khan the british empire at its peak and the romans were all bigger and greater military forces than the ottomans just accept the fact dude dat ur hearoes were not the best around
Great. Another historical video and instead of the learned fanbase swapping trading cards, we get the usual bitch fest. Wecome to the intelligent vids lol
@portugalreis actually 130 thousand verseus 9 thousand and it was not enough space for the ottomans + you hide your ass inside a castle come outside and face us lets see hwo would be screwed then?
@theworldisfucked1 seriously, we wouldnt live without our little snail brothers that would be boring you cannot win anything in a war the only thing you do is to break the laws of humanity in my opinion. Peace
Ma jien naqbeż għal ħadd. L-argument kien fuq il-klieb il-baħar u m'għandekx għalfejn tħarref u tħawwar l-istorja biex tgħid x'ġara. Mid-dehra la taf tikteb bl-Ingliż u lanqas bil-Malti int.
Their is a force powerful force behind the the Church
Viva malta taghna
@theworldisfucked1 Battle of lepanto 12 thousand turks vs 70 thousand britts, i really dont believe in unbalanced region or faction fighting power i do only believe in tactics the team with the best general will have the largest odds
