    The tune, as they're called when played on the pipes, is Dr. MacPhail's Reel, composed by Andrew Bain. Believe he was a Kiwi piper of some renown, but don't quote me on that. A great tune, well played here for sure that is often used in competition sets known as the March, Strathspey, and Reel. Cheers!

    So the user isn't directly making sound by blowing. They are just re-inflating a bag of air that is producing the sound.

    So, question... if the key to each song is different, can the pipes be tuned for the specific tune, or does another set of pipes have to come into play? Or are the songs for bagpipes generally set in a specific key? This instrument has always fascinated me. Being a musician, I'm always looking to learn the workings of other instruments. Thanks for the video!

    Can any song be played on a bagpipe or are some songs and notes out of its range? When my dad passed my brother found a bagpiper to play at his funeral, my dad was a former U.S. Marine and my brother requested he play the Marine Corps Hymn,, the piper said he didn’t think he could play that on a bagpipe. I have to say the bagpiper playing off in the distance during the ceremony way moving.

    Can you tune the drones to chords?

  • @em.142

    @em.142

    2 жыл бұрын

    Normally on Highland bagpipes they’re all tuned to A, but on some variants like the Scottish smallpipes or Northumbrian smallpipes they can be tuned to different chords, to varying degrees.

  • @piobmhor8529

    @piobmhor8529

    Жыл бұрын

    I would also like to add that it’s a lot easier to have someone else tune your drones while you make a constant low A on the chanter. If you’re alone, you silence the base and one tenor drone, play a low A and guesstimate how much to move the drone. Try again until you get that tenor drone in tune, then pop the second tenor and tune it to the first one. Repeat for the base drone. Like I said, it’s easier to have a second pair of hands do it for you while you play a steady low A.

    How does the bag fill again after the player needs a break. Further, is the bag open to the one side and needs to be covered fully with the arm, so that the air doesn‘t come out?

  • @jamesmenzies9932

    @jamesmenzies9932

    Жыл бұрын

    The bag is an airtight bladder made of animal skin such as cowhide or sheepskin. Nowadays it’s also made of synthetic material such as Gore-Tex. It only has the five small openings - three for the drones, one for the chanter that creates the melody and the fifth for the blowstick that has a one-way valve. The bag acts as an air reservoir that is squeezed when the player takes a breath.

  • @WickdPerfekT

    How do you achieve that stuttering sound on the chanter?

  • @mdr1396

    @mdr1396

    3 жыл бұрын

    The stutter is from grace notes and other embellishments, quickly lifting and tapping on a specific note without trying to actually hear the note itself, it's more for a break in the constant sound since the chanter reed can't really be stopped to create pauses, so that stuttering is to create the illusion of a break in the sound.

    By blowing into the mouth piece. That is what puts the air into the bag. Gentle squeezing with left elbow pushes the air out the pipes and also out the chanter where the fingering is done for the melody notes. The drone notes come out of the pipes. The piece up to the mouth is mainly for air from what I understand.

  • @justinnaramor6050

    @justinnaramor6050

    @@treywest268 Your observation is correct. So the air coming from your mouth is not what causes the sound (this is how something like a saxophone works); rather, the air coming from the bag is what causes the sound. The air from the mouth/lungs is used only to inflate the bag, nothing more. That's really what makes bagpipes so unique and fascinating to me, but I think it's also why bagpipes are sometimes misunderstood.
