    It's not that simple. It was a risk to make this movie then, but rather than Charlie Chaplin staking his career on it, American audiences at the time felt the speech was going along with unpopular ideas of the time and hated it so much that he was banned from America until the 70's.

    The way he says “hope” at the beginning. At first you think the Barber is hanging on the word and letting the nervousness get to him. But then you realize, it’s in that moment that he knows what to talk about to end the conflict and save everyone. It is hope.

    I’ve heard that these words are not in the scenery nor the script, he asked to write his own words to say in this scene, you can see that those are not word he just prepared to say it in a scene, you can feel the words and he actually means it and he say it and mean it from his heart, that’s why I really feel like crying listening to him.     Maybe so, but when he started acting in movies, that's just not how it went. In fact, when movies started having spoken dialogue, people hated it because, no lie, they couldn't hold a conversation in the theater among other reasons. Well, almost a hundred years after the first "talkies" as they were called and look where movies are now.

    Hats off to Mr Chaplin.. He truly made us speechless. Now I understand why someone in comment said "when the silent man speaks he make us speechless". Alas this speech is relevant throughout the centuries but we truly forget to comprehend the true meaning and shocking truth behind it.

    This is an amazing & powerful speech! that resonates now in this time, Charlie gave an amazing speech! That this should be shown in all schools of all levels, to have the young listen & take in the words he said, no matter the time period! This still goes on, I love this speech! It's real!
